Brandon Johns trending towards Michigan BB commitment
A lot of 247 crystal ball/twitter activity suggesting Johns could commit to Michigan fairly soon. Just watched his highlights and he looks like a pretty ideal 4 for JB's system.
You know it's funny because there was some random writer on twitter today saying Michigan was about to pull out a huge in-state commitment.
The tweet was before most of the CBs came in.
This would be an ultimate LOL. To go into that place and take him away from Stumpy.
edit: found it
Hearing U of M just got a massive in state commit. One most thought was going to go to their in state rival. If true, HUGE pickup for UofM

WD spent his offseason working on his shade game.
I work with his cousin. He's made a silent commitment to Michigan. His parents didnt even know at the time that he had made a decision.
This would be pretty amazing.
If you spent 18 years of your life living in a motel 6, wouldn't you jump on the chance to spend 4 years at the Ritz Carlton?
I'm pretty sure that the word for years has been that Johns is a Michigan lean. Just has always preferred Beilein's style of coaching/play based on the rumors for 2 years or so.
He's watched Izzo's player development up close his whole life, so not surprised he's been leaning M.
Beilein is going to have to recruit an actual big man again, no matter how much he hates it. After this season, we'll be down to 2 on the roster, neither of them all that athletic.

we're carrying 3 bigs and we were one of Bamba's last 4.
When they recruit and anticipate future needs. What a concept. And yeah...someone paying attention CAN know quite a bit about what the roster is going to look like in two years. As far as Davis and Teske, show me where they were "written off". You can't. I said they weren't that athletic, which is a fact that two years won't change.
When the hell is that guy gonna wake up? A lot of aspiring trolls here demand to know!
Brazdeikis is also in the mix correct?
Correct. They want a SG in this class though, so unless Beilein is willing to make this a 5 man class, they'll only have room for two of Johns/Hunter/Iggy/Nance/Tyson. I'm hoping they just take 5 kids in 2018 and grab three out of that group.
While I haven't spoken directly to Brandon/his camp, based on what I'm hearing it appears that he's on board. Brandon is ranked #44 in our initial rankings that are releasing in a few moments.
Good 4 man for Beilien, a legit 6'8, nice stroke from distance, very good athlete. Will likely have an instant impact as 3/4 off the bench that goes for 6-8 points and perhaps 3 rebs as a freshman. Really good class with Dave and Johns (hopefully), add one of Hunter/Iggy and it becomes a top 10 class for sure.
He has said in interviews that he changed his policy about oversigning. Losing out on Langford prompted it, combined with his always having more scholarships available in the spring.
You don't seem as high on Johns as a guy like Bingham. Think he's got work to do in terms of his motor? I know you like high motor, high athleticism guys, and I assume that's b/c those traits are tougher to improve upon than something like shooting. Am I right?
I remember looking at a guy like Trevon Bluiett and not being all that enamored. Didn't seem like a plus athlete, and didn't seem like a fantastic defender or high energy guy. Now he's on the verge of being an All-American this season. Don't know if Brandon Johns has as diverse of an offensive game as Bluiett did (who could shoot from anywhere), but seems like they're similar. Can't remember how Bluiett was on the glass.
as reflected in our initial top 150 for 18.
Brandon has a much improved motor, and is a plus rebounder this year on the EYBL circuit.
Bingham has more upside, and perhaps pro potential, but Brandon is more of a sure thing at this point. I think Brandon will come in (assuming he's on board) and give us quality minutes at the 4 spot as a freshman. If his motor is right and his game develops, he has all B10 potential in my opinion considering his athletic gifts and skillset.
When Matt D is happy about a bball recruit, we're all happy.
Look at our haul at each position group.
On how you look at recruiting.
If you look at recruiting from a standpoint of stars and how all the recruiting sites view kids, then he is correct. Beilein typically does not find guys that services view highly, and the rankings bear that out. He basically lands somewhere between 15-30 every year.
If you view recruiting from a standpoint of finding guys that are decent on sites and he's able to find something in them to elevate their game, then he's very good.
I completely admire how he builds these kids up to be better than the sites saw them. On the other hand, I really do wish he could land some of those ready-made 5 stars that come in and dominate. If you look up and down the rosters of teams that win the whole thing, rarely do you see the Beilein-formula holding true. Those teams are typically lined with 4-5 star kids.
You'll have to ask the hundreds of recruiting services that have been doing this stuff for decades, not Uncle Leo.
But there are two big time deliniations. That I can be sure of. Just because I have eyes and can read.
But Sadirius Washington can!
