OT: Jerry Sandusky's adopted son arrested on child sexual assault charges
http://wkrn.com/2017/02/13/sanduskys-son-arrested-for-child-sexual-assa…
Jeffrey Sandusky, 41 years old. Disgusting.
Edit: I realize that my "apple, tree" comment is inappropriate considering the fact that he was most likely sexually abused as a child by Sandusky himself. Regardless, this goes to show how a cycle of sexual violence can pass down from generation to generation with even farther reaching effects than previously feared.

Because I think you're alluding to what I'm wondering: aren't a disproportionate number of child abusers people who themselves were abused as child?
February 13th, 2017 at 3:10 PM ^
This is my wife's line of work. Although I'm not qualified to answer a lot of questions about it, this one I know: Yes.
February 13th, 2017 at 3:28 PM ^
I'm assuming your "Yes" is a reply to "a disproportionate number of child abusers people who themselves were abused as child[ren]." The question of whether the now accused Jeffrey Sandusky, adopted son of Jerry, was abused by Jerry has not been answered. It was another of Jerry and Dottie's adopted sons, Matt, who previously admitted abuse by his adopted father during Jerry's prosecution.

That is an excellent clarification. And yes, you understood me correctly. Among those who abuse children, a disproportionately higher percentage were abused themselves compared to the general population. How much higher? I'd have to ask mamabear. Also, I have no idea whether the accused here was abused.
As someone said below, this could be an example of how this evil can perpetuate itself down through generations, harming hundreds or thousands of kids. (Sadly, that's not hyperbole.) This is why reporting this stuff is so important; if you can break the chain, you can save so many kids.

Well, crap. I need to make a correction here. I was discussing this with my wife last night, and apparently a lot of the research that suggested that victims were more likely to become perpetrators has been challenged recently. Part of the problem is that a lot of these studies were based on self-reporting, and there were incentives in place for a perpetrator to claim that they were also a victim. But that self-reporting might not be credible or accurate.
I'm sure that there is much more nuance here than I understand, so I won't muddy the waters more in an attempt to clear them up. But please disregard my "yes" answer above.
February 13th, 2017 at 3:27 PM ^
Deadspin says it was Jerry Sandusky's other adopted son that publicly alleged abuse. However, I'd imagine it's pretty likely that this son did as well.

It's more complex in terms of understanding the inner workings of the person and their motivations. It's still simple in terms of impact on victims in terms of their own ability to have relationships, drug use, suicide, etc etc. It's a bomb going off in a child's life, and the motivations of the bomber don't change that.

By my lights this a human tragedy that is awful enough to just not make light of. Unfortunately, it is all too real - a man who many believe was sexually abused by his adoptive father appears to be perpetuating the cycle.
You do have to wonder, though, if PSU knew about Jerry Sandusky's assaults on children before the Sanduskys adopted Jeffrey.
February 14th, 2017 at 9:11 AM ^
There were 2 incidents in the 70s where Paterno was allegedly told Sandusky was molesting children.
The adopted son who is charged now is 41 years old.

So you looked at a thread about child abuse committed by someone who most likely was abused themselves and thought it called for a joke?
Whatever the record is for most downvotes from a single comment might be in play if this thread stays on the side board for any length of time.

So much sad news. Terrible news. Wonder if Jeffrey himself was abused. I am simply glad one more perpetrator is no longer able to abuse others.

That was about Matt Sandusky, not the accused Jeffrey.
February 13th, 2017 at 2:57 PM ^
Just, WOW! The abuse lasts through the generations, destroying lives. I hope everything turns out ok for the minor, and not too much damage has been inflicted on them already.

This news makes me sick.

It's hard to imagine how you keep your head when you find out your ex's new live-in is sexually abusing your son. Kept his head, alerted the authorities, and did not do anything rash.
Of course one suspects that we can guess how Jeffrey Sandusky got depraved (assuming the allegations are true). Just wretched.

Everyone always says they would kill someone, etc., but in the end it doesn't help anyone. Unless you get away with it.... (look who I'm responding to.)
Kid who went to my church ended up going to jail for sexually abusing his step kids. He married the woman to get access to her kids. Turns out he was abused as a kid before he was adopted by his parents. His parents were saints. Horrible all around.
...seems like they'd have programs for kids who were abused knowing that this is a pattern.
February 13th, 2017 at 3:26 PM ^
It wouldn't catch everyone. Me and my sisters grew up relatively normal despite being abused and growing up in foster homes for large swaths of our childhood; I have seen other kids (with stronger support systems) absolutly destroy their lives. It's a burden, and there is something innate that lets some of us be relatively normal. While Counciling certainly helps and is a critical component, a lot of kids I knew can flat-out fool even seasoned professionals.

The article I read said his is accused of sexually assualting two girls, ages 15 and 16. Anyway, hats off to the father that brought this to the attention of the police.

kill Jerry for all the pain he's caused and young lives he's destroyed?
And I don't even believe in capital punishement.
February 13th, 2017 at 3:25 PM ^
Dr, JAWS!
Why Jerry? Why not all serial abusers? Oh because he's a football coach. And your life revolves around football! Pathetic soul.

violent or sexual predators of children. Yes, for the most part.
There are all sorts of caveats as I don't think killing people solves anything for the most part.

Always wondered that myself. Is it just to fill space? Why not just type in the comment box instead of subject line?

It's "Never Mind"
I did it from my phone and forgot to delete the subject as well as the post. I have very strong feelings about child molesters and lots of topics like most people...but I try to do my part and stay on the sports topic hence the "NM"

this for a while. Go find a 8 by 10 concrete box to stand and sit in forever. Contemplate that, no matter what, you will never get out of this box and there is nothing you can do or say to change that. Your life has no meaning, no purpose, no reason for existing, that all you did your entirely life was spread pain and suffering, and that you will never have any real contact of any kind with another person for the rest of your life. That, my friend, is actual hell on earth.
#Death Penalty Too Easy.

I'm always for asking them what punishment they prefer -- life in a box or death -- and then doing the opposite, although I'm inclined to agree with you on your main point.
