OT - Girl Who Died Gets Carnegie Medal for Saving a Toddler

Submitted by Oost on

Here's some news out of San Diego that's much better than fapping security guards.

A 10-year old girl who died last winter pushing a toddler out of the way of a runaway car will be honored with the Carnegie medal for heroism. Feel for her family as they go through the holidays without their selfless, loving daughter.

Seconded. Very sad, thoughts and prayers, etc., but not even remotely sports related (not to mention UMichigan-related). There are hundreds of other sites where this news could be found. Also, it's worse when the poster includes information on his/her moral superiority (as if anyone would endorse what the SD Charger security guard was doing).

I find it funny that people don't have anything better to do than critique a forum on what makes a post "OT" or not. Does it really make people feel that much better when they police the forums, scrutinizing those that post something that maybe shouldn't have been posted at a certain time of year? Probably not. But when you compare to those two, three, or five people that read this and were reminded of the good in the world and that their office is pretty dusty, this post is worth it. I really have a hard time seeing the issue. At least it was labeled as "OT."

I can't speak for anyone else, but I enjoy coming to the blog to read about Michigan sports.  It's kind of like going to a movie where you are taken away from all the "real" issues of the world.  It is a great/sad story, obviously, but sometimes a person needs a break from all the sadness of real life.  That is the one and only reason I constantly complain about RIP posts.  I can look at almost any website or app to get that information. When I open Mgoblog, I don't want to see that.  It's not that I'm heartless, it's just not what I expect, or want, to see when I come to a sports blog.

You are a sad, joyless, and uncompassionate person. You may have a point on game day, but right now the board is all "random fantasy advice" and "strokin' it in San Diego." The bowl game isn't being actively discussed, and basketball season is in the pre-B1G play time.

If you can't appreciate the sacrifice of a 10 year-old saving a toddler because, "THAT AINT FOOTBAWW" then you should rethink some things.

does not mean this post should happen. Between this and the security guard, we basically are RCMB today.

There are other forums for this cool, heart warming story that I do appreciate. I go to a news site for them.

I don't go to CNN forums and ask, "How do you guys think Beilein can best cut down on Wagner's fouls per 40 without limiting his growth and aggression?"

I mean if this was some topic about the latest cat meme or Harbaugh to coach in the XFL sure maybe its RCMB.  Its not.  Not even close.

Attempt to be a human being for a few minutes and spend the 45 seconds it took you to read the story make you happy/sad about how even children understand risking their lives for something other than themselves.

You can also decide to not click threads clearly "OT" if you want to stick to straight sports

This breaks my heart, but thank you for posting. It's nice to be reminded of the good in this world, especially at this time of year and especially with all of the terrible news I see coming out of Syria.

OT stuff, especially stories like this.  I am amused by the people who click the thread and come into complain as if they had no other choice.

As a side note, would it possible for mods to create an OT tab on the front page (where you  see New, Recent, and Hot) so that any OT stories could go there?  I am not saying all OT posts would be allowed, or that they could not be deleted, but that would put them in one place for people to find (or not find).

The mods can't do it - we don't have sufficient access to Drupal.

We can delete OT posts, and I just took down a couple. It's a judgment call as to which ones ultimately get slaughtered - we could do them all without exception, but that's where I make the distinction and say each year that "non-OT" is not a prohibition so much as a significant narrowing of allowed OT which is totally scaleable to the amount of activity on the board. Over the holidays like this, we can leave a couple such posts as filler, but in busy periods, yeah, we tend to clamp down quite a bit more.

to neg every single one of the "it's not OT season/people die all the time/we are basically RCMB" posts. My thanks to OP - I heard this here first, and probably wouldn't have heard about this at all otherwise.

Thanks for sharing. You properly identified this as OT. If virtual reality can have its own thread, this definitely can. Some people will use any excuse to troll.

I've been on this board a very long time (well before I created my username) and I think the only thing missing is a true "forum section" with various headers i.e. Michigan Football, Michigan basketball, recruiting and then make an off topic section where you can create a thread on hamster masturbation and transgender cats if you'd like. Been on here reading forever it's my home away from home but always wondered why there is not a traditional forum section. OP: thanks for posting. Terribly sad but inspiring story.

You know a quick way to make OT posts disappear?  Don't comment on them.  If everyone agrees with you and follows suit, it'll disappear, if they don't, then the community disagrees with you and therefore you are wrong.

In a world filled with hate and negativity it's nice to see a story like this. Not because of the result but because of the complete selflessness by the young girl that gave her life so that another might live. To the folks that have a problem with the post. May I suggest OT'ing yourselves to Bolivia? I hear it's great there this time of year. Especially with all the OT-free posts that your shallow hearts could ask for.
