Are we sure Herman is an upgrade? Charlie Strong was the 2013 version of Herman.
November 20th, 2016 at 9:18 PM ^
Their resumes are actually eerily similar, although I think the advantage with Herman is that it is pretty clear cut that he was arguably the biggest factor in OSU's monster offense in 2013/14 and their championship run. But still, Herman seems equally likely to bust as Strong.

was the clear cut Defensive Coordinator for a very dominant Florida defense in 2008.

For some reason I thought he was a co DC, but the point remains. Sadly this is exactly what happened to Rich Rod, where he was seemingly on the hotseat before his first game.
November 20th, 2016 at 9:49 PM ^
Many new coaches face some initial resistance, though. There are only so many Jim Harbaughs out there that everyone immediately embraces. The rest have to deliver results to prove their worth. Rich didn't do that here and Strong doesn't seem to be at Texas either.
Just as Rich's record at WVU proved to be a mirage, Strong might not be as good as his Louisville record indicated, either. RichRod, Strong, Butch Jones, Brian Kelly, Randy Edsall - the list of "hot" Big East coaches that haven't panned out at bigger jobs is pretty long. Which is why I'd be a bit leery of Herman if I were Texas.

what more appealing option do they have? Even if they could get Miles, he's coming off being fired.
November 21st, 2016 at 8:31 AM ^
Agreed 100%. Was going to write the very same thing.
We struck absolute gold that there was even a Harbaugh out there for our program, let alone one willing to leave the NFL and want to be in AA long term. You have to take risks, and that's what UT will be doing. At least with Herman they get someone who has been in Texas and has probably made some inroads at the powerhouse high schools.

Yeah, Strong was a co-DC, at least by title, with Mattison at Florida. I don't remember the specific year but it was around their first title in 2006 before Mattison went to the Ravens.

He has won without Herman and without Mullen. Meyer is the Kingfish. Those two are minnows.

AND he will be supported.
Strong was doomed the day he stepped on campus.
November 20th, 2016 at 10:11 PM ^
Or maybe - like pretty much every other coach that's left the Big East for a Power 5 job - Strong just wasn't as good as advertised.
To be 5-6 with a loss to Kansas in his third year is unbelievable.

When you can have the pick of the litter among recruits in the state of Texas.

That's a big part of the problem as that is no longer true at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if Oregon is gauging Chip Kelly's interest. I don't think he's cut out for the NFL and Helfrich isn't cut out to lead Oregon.

That would be a great move. Swallow your pride and admit that you belong together.
You've seen the grass on the other side, and it is not greener.
Plus, the grass is going to fire you.

Yeah, that career path seemed to work out o.k. for saban....

Plus Alabama pretty much self-recruits now. At Texas it might take a bit more effort, for awhile anyway.

The only place I would expect a college coach to go after winning the amount of National Championships that Saban has is to the NFL. But he's been there done that, and burned out after two seasons. I would figure that the only thing that would get him out of Tuscaloosa is retirement.

Herman--probably a lock he goes there.

Tom Herman, come on down you are the next contestant on the texas coaching carousel.

This kinda was their Brady Hoke. Defensive minded, overall great guy, who just simply couldn't win.

Yep, this is the better analogy because Mack Brown was very successful over his tenure but definitely slipped at the end in culture and talent, perhaps even more so than 05/07 Lloyd. And Strong was never accepted just like RichRod, though obviously for different reasons.
Herman does have a stronger resume than Hoke, and that's probably because the behind the scenes forces at Texas are more of the insane-impatient-do-anything-to-win-now boo$ter types while the prevailing culture at M is less booster driven and more about the whole Michigan man obsession.

How was Charlie Strong like Hoke at all? Hoke had a losing record in 9 seasons as a head coach in the MAC and MWC after being a position coach. Strong was a winner at Louiville after being a NC DC at Florida. They were nothing alike.
November 20th, 2016 at 10:02 PM ^
Strong was just like Hoke. We're not comparing overall resumes, we're comparing Texas and MIchigan.
Both coaches were defensive minded and sunk their programs by delegating the offense to a buffoon.

Also, both are good recruiters, the players adored them, and both left / are leaving the cupboard mostly full, setting up the next coach (if he's the right guy) for a good season in year 1.
November 20th, 2016 at 10:45 PM ^
I'm not sure if the players adored Charlie Strong. I get that he wanted to clean up a program that was soft and had a lot of entitlement, but he came off way too much like Gunny Highway.
November 21st, 2016 at 12:39 AM ^
Did they ever get the same colored t-shirts? I could see where that could piss some players off.
November 20th, 2016 at 8:42 PM ^
I am surprised he wasn't more successful. I know he really cleaned up the program from Mack Brown, but he should have won more. Texas should be winning at Ohio State levels at all times (same goes with USC).
November 20th, 2016 at 9:09 PM ^
Even the schools with all of the advantages (tradition, $$$, superb recruiting base, etc.) will not win much with the wrong coach and staff.
