That was the most horrible looking thing I've ever seen on TV. Will be shocked if it is anything less than a broken neck.

She had some cajones to appeal that after her two previous incidents. Literally and figuratively.
+1 Insightful.

Yeah, what a shit show
I've heard its mostly just garbage and trash, not actual human waste.
You heard very wrong. Brazil does not treat its sewage, it goes straight from the "treatment centers" (which don't actually treat it) to the canals and rivers, to the ocean. This is a very well documented fact. Do your research before saying stuff.
"I've heard"
"I'm hearing"
"People are saying"

It's been a real stain on the pre-Olympics publicity

The cycling course just looks brutal between all the hairpin turns and the elevation changes and so forth. I can totally understand why quite a few riders bowed out after that second-to-last incline before the headed back down towards Rio yesterday. Certainly not for those looking for a nice, easy ride through an authentic Atlantic rainforest.

Where can I watch the events online?
Damn - that Dutch girl took a horrible spill. That was really bad.
very bad for her or else they would show a replay.
She was not moving at all when the camera swithed back to the race.
Whoa - a Dutch rider just had a terrifying-looking crash in the women's road race. She flipped off her bike. Hopefully she is OK.

It might be too soon to tell what her injury is, but it would be nice to know if she's at least conscious. It doesn't feel right that the announcers aren't even mentioning it with a "We'll update you as soon as we can" kind of thing.
They knew about the crash; it was broadcast live and they commented on it instantly. But after their initial remarks, they didn't say a word about it for a good 15 minutes. Finally, after the race was over, they briefly brought it up again.

This happens all the time in cycling. Going alone on a solo attack is a gamble, as you have to work a lot harder to keep up a high speed than you would in a group of riders. Frequently the leader runs out of gas near the finish as the fresher sprinters take over. It was a worthwhile risk for her as she isn't a sprinting specialist, but she didn't have enough in reserve to make the line.
Happened in the men's race too.
Hell, it happens in NASCAR with 500 hp cars. Wind resistance is a real thing.
When they race on Mars someday, the strategies will be completely different.
She wasn't solo though...
Mara attacked on the climb... and handful of riders went with her. She forced the pace when many of the other women weren't willing to do it.
Mara got hung out to dry when AV crashed.
If AV hadn't wrecked, the two of them would have teamed up to nearly the end. AV may have won in such a situation though as she's Mara's nemesis.
One would have thought 39 seconds on the descent would have been enough. Poor gal. She's #1 here though!

Jesus - that sucked. Cycling is so brutal. My wife nearly burst into tears when Abbott got passed.
