Devery Hamilton Decommits
So this happened:
Per Baltimore (Md.) Gilman assistant coach Henry Russell, four-star offensive tackle Devery Hamilton has flipped his commitment from Michigan to Stanford.
Hamilton made it official Friday evening during his in-home with Cardinal head coach David Shaw.
"I think just the academics that Stanford has to offer and his parents having a family friend out there who can help make the distance more doable," Russell added.
This is absolutely not someone getting "processed," as Michigan needs offensive tackles and now doesn't have any in this class. Expect Ben Bredeson to kick out to OT. Michigan doesn't have any 2016 OL on the hook other than maybe GA OL EJ Price, a supreme longshot. They do have plenty of other guys looking to fill spots; it's possible they just try to lock down some 2017 five stars to fill the gap.

Jon Jansen played tight end and linebacker in high school. He then had 50 starts at right tackle while at Michigan.
Wasn't there talke last year that Tyrone Wheatley Jr was going to get too large to play TE and would eventually move to the OL?

were recruited to play OL. Wheatley is a possibility, I suppose. I don't think we have any other candidates to move to OT.

Harbaugh's pro bowl LT in SF was a TE coming out of HS (Rockford - same school as Nordin and Braden), recruited to play TE at CMU, ran one of the fastest 200m in the state as a HS senior.
Lot of upside in converting a great athlete, agree with you though, that it certainly isn't something you want to count on at top tier school like Michigan. Too many unknowns and risks when you ask a guy to gain 50+ lbs and become technical enough to be effective at the new position.

I played with Jon Jansen in HS. I can confirm that he was a TE because I was one of the tackles. It would not surprise me if Harbaugh decides to move a TE to OT.
Also, isn't one of the DTs we took or were recruiting also an OT and rumored to switch over?

Jay Riemersma switched from a middling QB to an All Pro TE. Of course he had a bum shoulder so maybe that made learning new skills easier.
Spring 1997 Steven Hutchinson and David Brandt were asked to flip from DL to OG. Hutch started at LG for the 1997 team, Brandt was on the OL depth chart. 1998 Brandt was promoted to starting C and spent a few years in the NFL and of course Hutchinson went on to a quite successful NFL career. I wonder how they managed to make the switch.

Huh, Eubanks is an AJ Williams type? really? Eubanks is closer to a Devin Funchess type. Williams until this year was solely a blocking TE, almost another tackle. Eubanks is 215lbs and can't block worth a damn.

Relax. Harbaugh.

Realizing that he is yet to be in the fold, but doesn't Murphy have the size to potentially be a tackle?

among those left to get, vaults up to where? Right behind Gary?
January 30th, 2016 at 11:46 AM ^
mention of that being a possibiliy in one of the recruiting posts. Seems like a possibility, but not something to bank on. He's going to need to add 40+ pounds for that if he's currently at 250.

This decommitment is exactly why recruiting is a chess match with constant give and take and until the "letter" is signed, both sides must do what is necessary to protect themselves.
January 30th, 2016 at 10:27 AM ^
I thought the documents that made a commitment absolutely a lock is the financial aid. Is it actually some other thing, a letter, that seals it?
January 30th, 2016 at 10:31 AM ^
The National Letter of Intent is what matters. Kids can sign financial aid agreements with multiple schools, so they're not binding.

My understanding is the LOI commits the person to the school. Financial aid commits the school to the person, essentially. From the school's perspective the LOI is key.

Perhaps, but kids have parents, coaches, and mentors. And they would be wise to understand the nature of the enterprise they are engaging in.
January 30th, 2016 at 10:10 AM ^
Kids should also have a backup plan in place, especially if they have been instructed by the coaches to have a backup plan in place. Swenson, Weaver, etc. were advised to do so.

Yet it is a business decision for the kid, 5 days out from signing day. Kids change their mind. It happens, and is acceptable. It will happen again for some other program today. A better opportunity. A better future. A better fit. But it isn't ok for a program to make the same decision? Did the kid tell the program several weeks ago that they might be looking somewhere else? Probably not, but we don't know that. On the other hand, your assuming that said program gave no notice, and essentially did the same thing. We have no idea what the inner workings are. I think that recruiting is a cutthroat business for all involved. There is no perfect way to do this.
January 30th, 2016 at 10:30 AM ^
FWIW, I think Michigan knew. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been trying to rekindle things with E.J. Price.
January 30th, 2016 at 10:36 AM ^
And if that is the case, the program is going to do their best to save the situation with this recruit, or find someone to fill the spot. Life goes on for everyone involved. Magnus, who do you feel we add this late in the game. Is Price really a possibility?
January 30th, 2016 at 10:40 AM ^
I don't think Price is a realistic option. If we replace Hamilton, I'm not sure who it will be. I did a post on in-state prospects that Michigan could pursue, but the options are limited.
January 30th, 2016 at 10:42 AM ^
I just read your de-commitment post, and will look for the in-state post again. Thanks for the info.

Swenson?!
...way, way, way too soon.
January 30th, 2016 at 11:53 AM ^
But not inaccurate.
January 30th, 2016 at 11:17 AM ^
that is where are realistic optionst will come from.
January 30th, 2016 at 12:17 PM ^
MGoFish mentioned him as a possible target, more feasible than Price, without saying there was mutual interest.. He is from NJ, so we have that going for us.
