Potential DC Orr interviewing with Packers
January 30th, 2024 at 10:55 AM ^
Wellp, the secret is out on the Ravens Style Defense.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:46 AM ^
If you read the whole article it mentions that the Packers would also like to interview Ravens defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson. It looks like Wilson is more in demand as the Giants, Rams, and Titans also want to interview him.
January 30th, 2024 at 1:44 PM ^
I'm getting really sick of the term "Ravens style defense".
January 30th, 2024 at 2:26 PM ^
So is Ryan Day.
January 30th, 2024 at 2:30 PM ^
CJ Stroud? Is that you?
January 30th, 2024 at 3:00 PM ^
Wink martindale is a lot more fun to say
January 30th, 2024 at 7:53 PM ^
Legendary game show host AND a ground-breaking defensive coordinator. Truly a Renaissance Man.
January 30th, 2024 at 10:57 AM ^
I thought this was Shantee Orr. Denby!
January 30th, 2024 at 11:19 AM ^
I thought it was this Orr
January 30th, 2024 at 11:27 AM ^
The greatest Orr!
January 30th, 2024 at 12:09 PM ^
What about Johnny Orr (who coached Michigan to the NCAA Finals against Indiana in 1976)?
January 30th, 2024 at 2:07 PM ^
Orr not.
January 30th, 2024 at 10:57 AM ^
would be nice if moore could move quickly and viciously. im not saying he's not working on things behind the scenes, but our speed seems brutally slow on things. especially since this succession plan has been in place for 1.5 years. would think he had people in mind with a wink wink to bring in...
January 30th, 2024 at 11:01 AM ^
I agree that everything is moving incredibly slow. Very strange.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:18 AM ^
Perhaps indicative that many of the key positions will be internal promotions (OC, DC, ST, etc.). New position coaches may be outside hires, but those could take a little more time. Just a WAG.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:44 AM ^
I believe Webb reported that Clink is one of the people under consideration for the DC role, with Elston as co-DC.
January 30th, 2024 at 12:48 PM ^
My guess is Clink/Elston as pass/run co-DC. They have been coaching this defense just about as long as anyone they could get from the Ravens anyway.
with Elston’s promotion, maybe they can add his recruiting coordinator role for Jay, along with TE/ST, and justify a nice pay bump to keep him?
January 30th, 2024 at 1:05 PM ^
So, neither Clinkscale nor Elston going to the Chargers? Please let us keep some of our best coaches...
January 30th, 2024 at 11:31 AM ^
One reason things are moving slow is the individuals we've targeted are also being targeted by other schools/NFL teams.
Orr, for example, I'm sure would much rather be the DC for the Packers than he would the Wolverines. But if he doesnt get that gig my guess is he'd rather be the DC for the Wolverines than the LB coach for the Ravens.
I would rather wait a bit and see if we can land plan A versus rushing to fill a slot with Plan B. It's not like we're starting spring practice and recruiting has weathered the storm so far, it can wait a bit longer if it means getting the guy we really want.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:42 AM ^
Damn you and your reasoned logic
January 30th, 2024 at 12:15 PM ^
Andd is the more logical choice anyway.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:48 AM ^
Building this staff right the 1st time is priority #1 for Moore.
Harbaugh has great coaching ability but this program really started clicking when he got the right pieces in place.
I agree there is no rush.
January 30th, 2024 at 12:31 PM ^
A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct.
January 30th, 2024 at 1:43 PM ^
I'd say pounding Warde's desk for Herbert should have been priority #1 for Sherrone building a great staff.
My thoughts...
January 30th, 2024 at 2:01 PM ^
Herbert was making @ $1M/year as the highest paid S&C coach in college football. From what I saw in the other threads, he wanted a raise to @ $3M/year despite signing a new contract last year. As a reference, Jesse Minter & Sherrone Moore each made @ $1.2M last year.
Paying Herbert what he wanted, I'm guessing, probably would not sit well with the new coordinators and position coaches. Discontent over salaries across the coaching staff is not a great way to start a new coach's tenure.
Herbert overvalued himself. That's his choice. It put him in a position where he either got what he wanted and caused problems for everyone else, or had to move on. Sometimes letting good people move on for the overall betterment of everyone else has to happen. Sucks, but it's reality.
January 30th, 2024 at 2:20 PM ^
I really have no idea what to believe in all these stories. I cannot imagine teams were lining up to pay Herbert $3M a year, so I am dubious that was his demand. Also seems WM should have been smart enough to understand the role Herbert played for the team, so hard to believe he nickel and dimed him on a contract. It would be nice to hear from the individuals involved to hear their versions of the parting. And it will be nice to hear what the Chargers pay him.
January 30th, 2024 at 3:19 PM ^
“Teams” don’t matter. What was Harbaugh willing to pay Herbert?
January 30th, 2024 at 7:39 PM ^
Did Herbert really ask for a 10-year contract? He just signed for 5 years. I am not sure why he would think 10 is now necessary or even reasonable. I find the whole story hard to believe.
January 31st, 2024 at 5:39 AM ^
Getting a new job offer is the perfect time to ask for something unreasonable. Either they say no and you’re gone anyway or they cave and you get some crazy money for a crazy length of time.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:51 AM ^
Getting experience at college level as DC worked out well for MacDonald and for Minter. Then they made jump to NFL as DC. Baselessly, I don't think the Packers hire him and he comes our way.
January 30th, 2024 at 1:07 PM ^
Be nice if we could get someone who would stick around for more than a couple years. Having nfl coaching talent is great but I wonder what the revolving door does to recruiting.
January 30th, 2024 at 1:46 PM ^
How many OC/DC/Position coaches did Nick Saban lose over the past decade?
How did it impact his crootin?
Winning, putting guys in the League, and now NIL, are what helps crootin.
In the past 3 years Michigan has done 2 of them. That's a start...
January 30th, 2024 at 3:03 PM ^
this is the price of success
you are never going to some Bo style staff where all the coordinators stick around for 10 years at a time and the position coaches never aspire to anything else ever again... in retrospect it is fucking weird that we had Jerry Hanlon producing all pro linemen every other year for 25 years, most coaches of that stature today would be long gone
January 30th, 2024 at 12:51 PM ^
Who says that he's even in consideration. We hear about our guys all over ... why don't we hear about other guys here other than internals filling roles etc
Also, other than jimmy and moore, who has Michigan as their "top choice"? Why do we have to hope our ideal candidate chooses us? Bama, osu, georgia, texas... they go get the guy they want
January 30th, 2024 at 1:08 PM ^
Hmm, I've heard in a number of places that DeBoer was not Bama's first choice, Lanning and Mike Norvell were above him. And OSU was supposedly trying to hire away Kentucky's OC before they hired O'Brien. Texas just lost their DL coach to LSU in a lateral move, albeit to his alma mater,
I think we know a lot more about what's going on at Michigan than anywhere else and that makes it hard to make good comparisons.
January 30th, 2024 at 1:42 PM ^
i'll buy that, except that so far, we're falling short on actual outcomes. But hopefully that arrives in the coming days
January 30th, 2024 at 2:10 PM ^
Falling short on actual outcomes? Michigan just won the National Championship by 21 points.
Michigan has time to get the coaching staff sorted out.
They got the S&C coach and dietitian figured out first. Those are the two most critical roles for the current players on the roster. Keep them going in the weight room and ready for spring practices. As long as the rest of the staff is in place and ready by the start of spring practice, all will be good.
I understand many fans want everything to happen now, publicly, instantly so they can move on to worry about the next thing.
I prefer things be done right. So far, Sherrone seems to be working the right way, not the fans way. Yay!
January 30th, 2024 at 12:14 PM ^
I wondered if things were actually moving slow or if it only seems slow since I check this site for updates every 15 minutes or so.
January 30th, 2024 at 1:43 PM ^
another good point!
January 30th, 2024 at 12:46 PM ^
I thought the same, very strange
should OC and DC be announced sooner if they are internal promotion
just have some bad feeling that Warde is interfering
January 30th, 2024 at 12:53 PM ^
considering we wouldnt give the S&C coach 10 years... i think your bad feeling is a legit one. imagine the micromanagement for the big jobs
January 30th, 2024 at 1:41 PM ^
I've been thinking the same thing. The Man of Constant Inaction is likely getting in the way.
January 30th, 2024 at 2:35 PM ^
Not really. The guys Michigan is going after seem to be hot commodities that have other options to consider. This process is only quick when the you’re offering somebody and you’re the clear cut top option.
It’s also been like a week since Harbaugh announced he was taking the Chargers job and just a couple days since Moore was officially given the head coaching job.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:27 AM ^
I suspect they've reached out and are talking to guys but the Ravens have only been out of the playoffs for a couple of days and so there may be some additional availability for guys like Orr that was harder when he was a position coach prepping for games. I know coaches balance it all out but still it takes some time. And while I'm sure Moore has reached out Orr is going to leverage that interest to get other interviews, so it being "brutally slow" might be on his end as much as Michigan's.
Also, the reason guys like Macdonald and Minter came to UM was because they were trying to get shots at DC jobs in the NFL; if Orr is already getting NFL interviews that negates a huge selling point for UM. I would be a little surprised if the Packers went with Orr as a first-time DC so we'll see.
January 30th, 2024 at 11:41 AM ^
I mean, "brutally slow" is a relative term. We won the National Championship 22 days ago. Harbaugh was still our head coach SEVEN days ago. We have had our new head coach, Moore, for FOUR DAYS.
These are multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts that are being written for very busy people, many of whom have current jobs. Coach Moore has about 4,567 things to do every day.
I mean, I would love to have immediate answers to every question as well. But I think we can relax on the timeline. I think the University has moved fairly quickly to get a new head coach, and are actively locking down existing coaches, pursuing new ones, keeping the recruiting class together, etc.
I think the internet age has warped our sense of time. I also kind of want everything right now, and for it all to be great and perfect. But that is not realistic. I would MUCH rather take a bit of time and get the right candidate, than be stuck with the wrong one for 1-3 football seasons.
January 30th, 2024 at 12:58 PM ^
Its in comparison to other elite football schools and the pace they move to get players, coaches, etc... we said things were on hold for jimmy's decision. but im a little surprised that we seem to be in slow motion after moore was announced a week ago on getting a staff in place to we can salvage some portal players etc...
January 30th, 2024 at 2:36 PM ^
It’s really not. Jobs are typically open for more than 4 days at elite schools as well.
January 30th, 2024 at 6:29 PM ^
Yeah, well maybe last year they were. But this is 2024 buddy!
January 30th, 2024 at 7:25 PM ^
If by “last year” you mean every opening at the end of the 2023 season. Bama and Washington were the only hires that took less time than Moore’s appointment, and I’m sure openings on their staff weren’t completely filled within 4 days
