WTKA Roundtable 1/11/2024: A Team Full of Yzermans
Problem with the timing of a Monday game is our roundtable posts the same morning as THE PODCAST, which is 4 hours long, way more in depth, and below.
[Hit the JUMP for this one, scroll for the big one.]
Things Discussed:
- Michigan won a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
- Anyone trying to take away from this is someone whose opinion never has to matter to you again.
- Donovan Edwards: the passing down running back.
- THE DEFENSE!!!! Penix under pressure. NFL defense vs NFL rookie. In 2019 we were saying you need an NFL quarterback to win a championship; in 2023 it's an NFL pass defense.
- Win in the trenches: Penix's third read was Mason Graham. That RT was under siege. Made Penix uncomfortable.
- Break: Life after Harbaugh?
- Post-break: Sainristil. One of the all-time greats.
- Harbaugh? Sam is talking like he's definitely exploring NFL, that doesn't mean he's 100% leaving. Lots of guys are 100% staying if Harbaugh is, and 100% if Sherrone Moore is the guy. May not be true if Michigan goes outside for a Kalen DeBoer.
- Jesse Minter: do whatever we can to keep the man.

That linebacker wasn't sucked inside; he was sucked out of the airplane.

"I'll take glorious problems to have for $600, Alex."
You guys went to all the trouble to say all of these words. I pledge to do my part by listening to them all as well. We're all in this together. Seth. (And thank you!)

As a long time reader/listener of MGoBlog, I want to personally thank you Brian. I wholeheartedly agree with what was said about you in the thank you portion of the podcast. The way you can encapsulate and articulate the mood and feelings of being a Michigan fan is special. The creators you’ve brought on the blog are special. The content on this blog is special. MGoBlog is special, because you are MGoBlog. We are incredibly lucky to have this site, free of charge no less, and it is greatly appreciated. Thank you sir!

Was going to start its own thread. I wasn’t in Houston to tell you guys but I appreciate this site more than you will ever know. Great writing and UM football knowledge. Best in the biz and no fees. Look forward to the yearbook!

Oh man, I could not agree more. There is not a similar site like this for any other team/program!

I'm only halfway through but I was sad they didn't discuss the Harrel play where he takes out their wide receiver on the screen.

I finished the podcast then saw this posted to YouTube right after. If I was supposed to be productive today, it was doomed to not be.

I don't think they should go after Kalen DeBoer if Harbaugh leaves. He's a great guy and I'm not worried about the culture fit. I am worried about scheme fit. He's got a high flying offense over there in Washington and that doesn't fit the Michigan roster. Also not a fan of his defense.
Keep Sherrone and see what happens.

If Jim bolts, there are three options - 1) Sherrone; 1) Minter; 1) Mike Hart.
Any of those three should get the job before anyone from outside is even contacted. This roster and this culture are too good to throw away and start over with someone outside the family. If it goes downhill, then fine - look around outside if you need to. But until that happens, stay with what's working.
FWIW, I think Minter will not be retainable if Harbaugh exits. Also FWIW, I don't think Jim will find what he's looking for in the NFL. He can ask a lot right now, and it'll probably be more than an NFL owner wants to give to one person. (That's my hope, anyway...)

How about option 1A) Have Jay Harbaugh change his name to Jim, shave his beard and see if anyone notices.

Maybe not their defensive scheme, but their DBs played a hell of a game.

Mason Graham hiring Drew Rosenhaus? Haven't heard that nor can I find anything on the internet about it. Apparently he's been JJ's agent too.

"It's always a mystery why he doesn't get mentioned more."
Classic Craig, wondering why someone who played 75+ years ago not getting more PR.

last segment really sparked onions and allergies

That was sooooo much fun. Thanks for the radio ride, guys.

I've been screaming Brian's point for a while now: It's not that Alabama and Georgia aren't talented, but Michigan moneyballed and outmaneuvered the modern 5-star auction process and found real stars whom the scouting agencies gave the who-dat treatment.
Alabama has the 5-stars, but Michigan was clearly the more talented team. That's not a statement about Alabama. It's an indictment of the scouting services. They're not doing their jobs anymore, and Michigan is the first program to realize this.

That was glorious!
Craig jumped in on two of Sam's questions to Brian ..lol...I love Craig, but I was like "Damn it Craig, let Brian loose"
In all serious, just an epic season for so many reasons. I am grateful to have witnessed this, as is my entire family.

Thank you guys. I know it wasn’t easy and I definitely distanced at times that I know you never could but I knew I could always come here for great analysis and learn things about football I’d never thought about before. What a journey.
