The Boys in the Boat Buckeye Diss
Saw The Boys in the Boat last night and there was a reference to Jesse Owens from “the University of Ohio.” That’s a pretty big gaffe in a major movie. I chuckled. Anybody else catch that? As far as a review, wholesome and entertaining but typical Hollywood production of a true sports story.

I don't know what it says about me that I read the title and my immediate thought was that this was a heretofore-unknown-to-me CFB podcast

Apple iTunes Description:
A rollicking romp, the "Boys in the Boat" podcast features three former players sipping on IPAs and sharing stories of life, gambling, pop culture and reacting to this past weekend's games... all from the bow of a 30 ft Bennington pontoon, presented by Draft Kings.

Wonder if it's a reference to Three Men In A Boat. Pretty much the funniest book I've ever read.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
Perhaps a podcast by former Minnesota football players.

So…we have P.J. Fleck as coxswain as the boat rows over a cliff? Seems oddly real.

Although no marine reference, Mel Tucker would be an good cockswain. It's just easier to see him saying,
"Stroke, stroke, stroke....

Mel references always evoke bad visuals.

+1 if that’s a gophers reference. +50 if it’s a Vikings one

I thought exactly the same thing

The "The" trademark started in 1986, I think.

Also, notably, not The University of Ohio.

I'm sure the Buckeye faithful will let it slide.

What’s funny to me is that OU and OSU have had legal proceedings in the past to determine who can brand and market using just “Ohio” I think the vast majority of such branding was done by OSU. So, this faux outrage is quite new for them.

Well, to be fair, I've heard "Michigan University" occasionally. So, ignorance doesn't seem to have any school favorites.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:01 AM ^
I only remember hearing that one time in particular.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:44 AM ^
That, and 'Big Blue'...
WTF? Kentucky is a whole different place! You want to be respected as a college football person then don't equate Michigan with 'Big Blue'. Fuck right off with that shit...

And once again in NYC, I've encountered a bozo who mistook Michigan for Michigan State.
This one, rather than admitting her blinkered Northeasterner's mistake, blamed me, because I didn't say "University of Michigan" but said "Michigan," which she declared must mean Michigan State.
December 26th, 2023 at 9:38 AM ^
Surely that was a Michigan alum who caused it. Well done ...

"The Boys in the Boat" book is fantastic and tells an amazing American underdog sports story. Unfortunately your review lines up with others of the movie, that George Clooney's direction leaves much to be desired.

I noticed this slight at the early screening I attended. I smirked in the moment and wondered if other Mgobloggers might make a note of this. The movie is fun, great message and interesting.

Seconded, the book is one of my all-time favorites. To anyone interested enough to read this thread, stop what you're doing, go to your local library or Amazon, get the book, and thank me later.

I saw the movie and noticed the same thing. Funny -- but also a surprising gaffe for a major production given that it takes about 5 seconds to google "where did Jesse Owens go to school." I did that, and noticed that his uniform jersey said "Ohio" not "Ohio State". Maybe Brady Hoke's ancestors designed them?
Also, I agree with John Bacon that it's cool that Michigan has a plaque at Ferry Field honoring Owens for his 4 records set in one day in '35.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
No mention of his school or team on this plaque

OSU fans gave Tom Harmon the standing ovation as well. It hasn't always been petty.
I doubt we will see that anytime soon.

Are you sure it wasn't THE University of Ohio?

I've always heard that he was a complete asshole to people all the time. Sorry - I can respect what he did on the golf course (and the courses he designed), but I cannot respect a person that is a straight up asshole to others.

Ric Ocasek was pretty rotten to Paulina Porizkova.
