OT: Florida State calls emergency BOT meeting
This would be the first step in possibly leaving the ACC.

They have more balls than Michigan does 🤷
December 21st, 2023 at 10:52 AM ^
What, exactly, are you wanting Michigan to do that would require 'balls'?

And now, it’s more like ‘Juwan Howard has more wins than Beilein at the same point in his tenure’. I kid, i kid, kind of
December 21st, 2023 at 8:09 PM ^
In 2014-15, in his EIGHTH season at Michigan, John Beilein went 16 and 16 with the squad, 8-10 in the B1G, missing the NCAA tourney for the third time. The yahoos all cried for his head.
In order to keep his job, Warde made him take on a D coordinator. It was humiliating.
I had been insisting that Beilein was a genius from the beginning. A comb back through posts here will verify that. I adored the guy.
I fought with all the people, and the yahoos came out of the woodwork, to crap on Beilein. FOR YEARS. A certain columnist here made shitty comments about Beilein and his players ad nauseum.
I made the observation about Juwan and his record not to say he was as good as Beilein, anything, EXCEPT to point out that being 12 games up on our former Hall of Fame coach after three years absolutely does NOT indicate total collapse or awful coaching.
I think that people of a certain level of acumen can take that idea on.

Congratulations on emerging from your coma! However, I'd refrain from commenting until you've caught up on the last three months or so.

December 21st, 2023 at 11:41 AM ^
Tell about 3/4s of this league to knock it off with the kangaroo courts or they can kiss their sweet Big Ten money goodbye
December 21st, 2023 at 2:10 PM ^
Eh, I think Michigan should, and even will, insist on proportional shares of the media money. That isn't going to happen until the next media deal, so is there much point in their talking about it now?
What they can do is talk to other leading programs about banding together. Either to push for things in their common interest and possibly to form a super conference outside of NCAA control. The amount of extra money they can generate is enormous. I don't think these moves should be treated as threats. It's what Michigan should be doing regardless of how the other conference schools treat them.
December 21st, 2023 at 3:44 PM ^
But has FSU knowingly transmitter an STD?
December 21st, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
Get rid of the band around theirs that is Warde. Tell the Big Ten to pound sand. Tell the NCAA to shut up and color.
December 21st, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
lol, really? how much time ya got?
December 21st, 2023 at 11:18 AM ^
I dunno, this kind of persuades me that M's quieter approach has merits. It's embarrassing to be affiliated with an institution that has, for more than a year now, been making noises that they'll definitely, absolutely, for sure do something about the ACC and how unfairly it treats them. The more FSU postures without doing something, the more I think they've got no leverage.
M should speak softly and carry a large stick. What that is, I dunno, I hope Ono and the team are thinking on it.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:28 AM ^
Where's this "large stick" and why has it never. Ever. Been used.?
December 21st, 2023 at 11:33 AM ^
I agree. But there's a real chance we don't have one right now. If that's the case, we should work on making one and stay quiet instead of leaking to ESPN that we are having a meeting about how mad we are.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:36 AM ^
This is the promise of those who advocate for always being quiet and doing everything 'in the background' - the promise that things are being done, and they all result in great things for Michigan.
Of course, we never see, hear, or learn about such great things...
I'm not saying that everything needs to be broadcast in the public, but there are times that a public response and public actions are necessary to support programs/students/coaches/athletes when they're getting railroaded.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:41 AM ^
I very much get the point. I have zero faith in Warde and don't think there's anything going on in the background, which is a problem - because there should be. But outside of making a few statements in support, which I think Ono has done, I don't think we should be constantly telling the world that we are Very Angry.
If you want to go to war, fine, but actually go to war. File the lawsuit, make an agreement with other schools, stop sharing revenue, whatever. If you're not going to do that, maybe because you can't, then don't beat the war drums.
December 21st, 2023 at 3:45 PM ^
Yes, always just blame Warde as an immediate response for everything.
December 21st, 2023 at 5:06 PM ^
As opposed to defending Warde at every chance?
December 21st, 2023 at 10:29 PM ^
Warde is the guy in charge of off-field sports stuff. What part of our response to the NCAA isn't on him? (What part of it are you impressed by?) Shit, I blame him for not setting up a better HR function; if this was Alabama I don't think Conor makes the staff.
December 22nd, 2023 at 7:22 AM ^
Warde is a ineffective underwhelming Marvin Milktoast AD

Yep, it is just like all the other wishcasting such as "the money cannon," "the binder of dirt on other programs," the TRO lawsuit, etc. etc.

What's the point of doing all this now? The 12 team playoff starts next year. Who the hell cares about conferences anymore?
ACC, B10, B12, SEC winners and runner ups will all get in easily
December 21st, 2023 at 12:31 PM ^
" Who the hell cares about conferences anymore? "
The teams that want to end up in the eventual super conference that is composed of the B1G and SEC.
December 21st, 2023 at 1:40 PM ^
Definitely not the case that the ACC runner-up will get in easily--most years they won't get in at all. (E.g., #15 Louisville this year, #13 FSU last year, etc.)
December 21st, 2023 at 2:18 PM ^
It is all about the $$
December 21st, 2023 at 2:50 PM ^
What's the point of doing all this now? The 12 team playoff starts next year. Who the hell cares about conferences anymore?
The Big Ten still splits bowl revenue. The more teams in which the Big Ten can stack into the 12-team playoffs, the more revenue there is to divvy up among the member schools.
December 21st, 2023 at 3:57 PM ^
ACC, B10, B12, SEC winners and runner ups will all get in easily
I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Those at-large bids are likely going to be dominated by the B1G and SEC. Looking at the current rankings, Oklahoma State is the highest ranked “runner up” from the Big 12 for next years conference lineup at #20 with Louisville the highest ACC team at #15, ND is also #16 fwiw.
Based on the current rankings, you would get Michigan (B1G), Texas (SEC), FSU (ACC), Arizona (B12) and Oregon St (P12) as autobids by virtue of being the 5 highest ranked conference champs. Liberty would replace Oregon State as an autobid if they deem a 2 member P12 doesn’t qualify for an autobid.
You’d then get: Washington (B1G), Texas (SEC), Bama (SEC), Georgia (SEC), OSU (B1G), Oregon (B1G, and Mizzou (SEC) to fill out the field as at-larges. #10 Penn State would miss the cut. It’s a real stretch to say the runners-up from the ACC and B12 would easily be in considering those teams will have to be top10ish. That field is going to be dominated by the B1G and SEC every year
December 21st, 2023 at 10:55 AM ^
Has FSU thought this through? I mean yes, they got totally fucked over being left out of the Championship bowl series and yes, their membership in the ACC probably played a big role in getting left out and yes, they are the cash cow when it comes to the ACC in football but have to share revenue equally with programs like NC State and Duke that nobody gives two shits about, much less watch, but man, the other institutions and the league commissioner wont like this at ALL and will most likely get upset when they hear they want to move.
Sincerely,
Warde (probably)
December 21st, 2023 at 10:55 AM ^
They may want to leave, but where are they going to go? Do they have an offer from the B1G or SEC? My understanding is they do not.
I'm sure the SEC would be interested in FSU and Clemson, so work with them and get a package deal going. Otherwise, it's just a lot of message board yelling & whining, but from wood paneled rooms & stuffed leather seats.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:01 AM ^
I have a feeling that it's just a matter of time before they join the SEC. They're already in the SEC footprint. I don't know what the B1G offers that would entice them.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
I think the argument is that the ACC and SEC are both ESPN conferences, so it doesn't make any sense for ESPN to pay more for FSU as a member of the SEC than they do for them as a member of the ACC. But, Fox might think they are worth some share of B1G money that is likely somewhere in between what Washington and Oregon got and a full share.
So, in summary, an actual invitation is probably what the B1G offers that the SEC doesn't.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:23 AM ^
Florida would not be welcoming.

December 21st, 2023 at 11:08 AM ^
Not reading the Athletic, but I've seen reporting elsewhere that the first step is essentially getting the grant of rights removed. Once they do that, they must feel that the SEC/Big Ten won't wait for the other to make the first move and will immediately try and nab the ACC "properties" they want. I think it's a pretty reasonable assumption, honestly.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:37 AM ^
The only way they can do that is to buy out, I believe. It can be done, but very expensive. Not sure they have enough for that *and* the ACC buyout fee.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
It seems like they're going to challenge the legitimacy of the GOR, not buy it out. If they succeed, they will will succeed for everyone (Clemson, UNC, etc.). If the GOR is the only thing holding the ACC together, it's removal will lead to it all falling apart very quickly.
December 21st, 2023 at 4:13 PM ^
I’ve heard (quite possibly unreliable) rumors that Fox would be willing to help facilitate the payment for the GOR exit.
December 21st, 2023 at 11:42 AM ^
FSU has been searching for a way out of the ACC for some time now. They've had lawyers at ACC offices several times going over the GOR. Simply put, they've already sunk A LOT of time and effort (see: money) into this.
It ain't yelling & whining. They're going try any avenue they have to leave.
December 21st, 2023 at 10:32 PM ^
I'm a lawyer; I do complex contract litigation. If you have a strong claim, you sue. If you don't have a claim, you make lots of noise about how you're definitely absolutely going to sue because (a) someone might think you'll litigate and (b) you won't reveal how weak your hand is. "I sent my lawyers to look at your document really hard" doesn't scare me a whit, "here's a five page memo explaining why your document is void and unenforcable" could.
