OT: Nebraska Quarterback Recruiting (2024)
All of the sudden Nebraska has crystal ball picks to land McCord from Ohio St and Wingdings just put in a flip pick for Dylan Raiola, the number one qb in the nation, from Georgia to Nebraska. Apparently I missed the appeal of the Nebraska offense this year when Michigan stomped them.
December 11th, 2023 at 6:55 PM ^
Wow the Dylan Raiola flip would be huge for them
December 11th, 2023 at 7:38 PM ^
Until he enters the portal after his sophomore season.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:17 PM ^
Isn't he a legacy? If there was a chance to see a different future for the team, wouldn't you follow your old man?
I get not everyone does, but I won't be surprised if it happens. Rhule already knows a good QB costs $1M.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:44 PM ^
His uncle is their oline coach
December 11th, 2023 at 9:26 PM ^
His dad also played for Nebraska. Dylan's been around the program to some degree for pretty much his entire life and was interested in the Huskers before committing to Georgia. This would be surprising given the timing, but not a shock at all otherwise.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:16 PM ^
Isn't this the kid who had a Zoom call with a hungover Scoff Frost?
December 12th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
Yeah, but it's even worse. Frost was supposed to have an in-home visit and Dyan had his family and friends come to his house to meet Frost.
But Frost was drunk/ hungover and changed it to a zoom meeting. Dylan was pissed and dropped Nebraska. But Rhule kept his uncle on as the O-line coach, so they maybe all is good now.
December 11th, 2023 at 10:36 PM ^
His uncle just got a big pay bump today…
December 11th, 2023 at 6:57 PM ^
Lol. Given the times, the logical conclusion is that someone saw enough this year (good or bad but probably good) to decide to open up their wallet.
I know there’s a family connection for Raiola, but closing on elite players now is just like closing on a house - cash due upon signing.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:00 PM ^
To flip a Georgia 5 star from Georgia, they must be ponying up some major cash.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:03 PM ^
I thought he was from Arizona?
December 11th, 2023 at 7:07 PM ^
He went to HS in Phoenix area until senior year then transferred to Atlanta area after committed to GA
December 11th, 2023 at 7:08 PM ^
His profile says Buford, Ga but that’s where he’s playing this year. He played at Chandler, AZ last year so you are prob right. Either way…Nebraska?
December 11th, 2023 at 7:11 PM ^
Either way…Nebraska?
Dylan's father, Dominic Raiola, was a stud center for the 'huskers before spending his NFL career with the Lions. His uncle, Donovan, played at Wisconsin but is now the OL coach at Nebraska. Family connections are strong.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:14 PM ^
Good info, didn’t know that tidbit. Haven’t paid any attention to his recruiting due to his commitment to Georgia.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:28 PM ^
He actually played some of his youth football here in Michigan for the Lakes Area Hawks in the walled lake/commerce area.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:36 PM ^
That makes sense, with his dad being a Lion and all
December 11th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
And he did not play QB then.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:57 PM ^
I actually played baseball with him for like a tournament or two in the same area. He appears to be a much better QB than he was a catcher lol
December 11th, 2023 at 7:04 PM ^
I thought he was planning on going there before but Scott Frost cancelled (hungover) so Dylan decided on OSU/GA
December 12th, 2023 at 12:44 AM ^
Wasn’t he committed to OSU for a hot minute?
I’m excited for Nebraska. They’ve done their time in the desert.
EDIT: Raiola was an OSU decommit. FWIW--OSU message boards are in a tizzy about who they are going to get from the portal to be their QB. After missing on Cam Ward it seems like many posters are coming to the realization that they are going to have to roll with the four star QBs they already have on their roster. (next years class is listed)
Devin Brown Jr. 97 4 star 44 overall
Lincoln Kienholz So. 94 4 star 138 overall
Air Noland Fr. 95 4 star 58 overall
With the #1 player and #1 WR potentially flipping to FSU, you have to be excited about the wheels coming off in Columbus next year. Their schedule doesn't look that tough next year, but I could see them losing to Oregon, PSU, Michigan and Nebraska if McCord and Flemming are there. ...and maybe Iowa if their post-Brian Ferentz offense is any good. 3-4 losses seem more likely than anytime in the past 20 years.
December 12th, 2023 at 12:27 PM ^
If Day loses three games next year, I suspect he gets canned. The narrative in Columbus will shift from “he can’t beat Michigan” to “WTF, we can’t lose more than one game a year!” It would likely mean another year out of the playoffs too, even with expansion. Would be fun to watch.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:39 PM ^
Didn't we have one with CJ???
December 11th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
If it dad put any money away he should be coming from a multi millionaire household. (Dad made nearly $20M in his career) He also makes $325K a year as a coach there (from an article a year ago)
I know another million never hurts the family but it would actually sort of be weird to ask Nebraska boosters to "buy" a millionaire's son.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:05 PM ^
Why does this blog always do this when the son of a former pro is trying to get a scholarship or NIL?
Just because dad is a millionaire doesnt mean the kid shouldnt get what he deserves.
It was weird when people said Jett should be a walk-on bc Juwan can afford tuition, and Dylan can make his own money, even at Nebraska.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:16 PM ^
No one is suggesting that. Just that the kid probably doesn't need to go to the highest bidder, especially when it involves spending some of the best years of your life playing for a crap football in Lincoln effing Nebraska. I'm sure the NIL package from Georgia is great.
December 11th, 2023 at 9:19 PM ^
Dad made nearly $20M in his career) He also makes $325K a year as a coach there
Dad played in the NFL but it’s his uncle that’s the coach
December 11th, 2023 at 6:58 PM ^
Rhule with money to burn. There damn well better not be any cheeseburgers though.
December 11th, 2023 at 6:58 PM ^
Doesn't Railoa have a family member on the Nebraska staff?
December 11th, 2023 at 7:03 PM ^
OL....his dad played there too
December 11th, 2023 at 7:03 PM ^
His uncle is the OL coach at Nebraska and his dad is former Lion and Nebraska legend Dominic Raiola. It's not that random. Plus he'd be the dude there
December 11th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
A lot of open starting positions and play time available our there
December 11th, 2023 at 7:00 PM ^
That would be ridiculous. A buddy of mine was going on and on about raiola this weekend
December 11th, 2023 at 7:06 PM ^
I am $ure he i$ making the be$t $election from hi$ option$ that he can under the $ircum$tance$. But I'm $ure I have no idea what criteria he is u$ing to $elect where to go to $chool.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:28 PM ^
His dad went there and his uncle is a coach there, and he would be the starter right away.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:56 PM ^
He would?
Then why is McCord bothering.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:23 PM ^
McCord would be starter and that would give Raiola a year to grow and learn.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:30 PM ^
Make$ a £ot o€ ¢ent$ .
December 11th, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
Plus one for effort in typing that.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:07 PM ^
Is this really a shock? Nebraska's head coach spent 3 season recruiting in the state of Texas. Rhule was in the heart of the country for organizing NIL deals before NIL was allowed.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:10 PM ^
Seems like a dumb move if I’m Raiola. I can’t imagine he needs the money or that it’s that much better than what Georgia could offer. The weapons he would have at Georgia would be a lot better. Nebraska just isn’t competing anymore. They may put together a magical season every 10-15 years, but that’s it. No one is going there. Also Rhule isn’t exactly known as some QB whisperer or for putting guys in the league. Whatever.
December 11th, 2023 at 7:30 PM ^
Some are leaders, some are followers. Maybe Raiola wants to lead a resurgence of a school that means something to his family, as opposed to just being the latest guy on the Georgia gravy train.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:18 PM ^
Nebraska is a dead-end team. They will do nothing of note. Most elite level recruits will not go there. They will have the occasional senior laden team that competes well. He will not finish his college career there. I would bet money on that.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:21 PM ^
Not true at all. They have strong appeal to many southern recruits and have a good history.
December 11th, 2023 at 8:46 PM ^
This is a weird take. Arizona was considered a dead-end team. Colorado was considered a dead-end team. For God's sake, a few years ago TCU and Cincinnati could have been considered dead-end teams.
Is your position really that it's impossible for teams/programs to improve?
Talented football players in Nebraska are stars at a level almost unimaginable anywhere else. There are no other big-time college football teams in the state, and no pro sports at all. You play in the Big Ten, have pristine athletic facilities, a fan base desperate to get back to the mountain-top, and a highly-regarded coach.
Besides, Nebraska dominated for the better part of three decades, and it's not like Lincoln was a significantly more exciting place then.
I, personally, can imagine many, many worse places to play.
December 11th, 2023 at 9:42 PM ^
Right, and I would be saying the same thing if he (or another player like him) picked those schools.
December 11th, 2023 at 9:18 PM ^
Not too long ago, people were saying similar things about Michigan.
They have the fan base. With Big 10 revenue, they could rebuild to be a decent program.
