2024 3* S Marcus Wimberly decommits from Arkansas and receiving Michigan crystal balls
Wimberly just visited for The Game and Michigan has been trying to flip him from Arkansas for a while
December 1st, 2023 at 9:39 AM ^
We offered back in June indicating we have had some interest for a while. His offer list is us then air, but likely an uncovered diamond that our coaches can turn into a stud. Hoping he joins!
December 1st, 2023 at 9:43 AM ^
What? Only a three star? The Buckeyes would never even look at him - and, that’s why they are one of the most talent loaded rosters in the country.
Hmmm… was Sainristil a three star prospect? How did that turn out?
Wishing him well as he reaches a decision.

We already know about the huge breakup Mikey had last year and the interceptions he's had, but my gosh the lumber he laid on that buckeye last weekend....
December 1st, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
Brady Hoke heard football on that play.

Sainristil is just a great example of a player and leader. IMO, his pass break up in Columbus was THE critical play of the game. Fantastic effort - one “small effort” that had a huge impact on the outcome of game.
Go Blue!

I will never forget that play for the rest of my life.

lol so many players on the defense were 3 stars. Jaylen Harrell and Rod Moore both 3 stars the guys who sealed The Game. The staff has a really good track record of recruiting DB’s and identifying the right talent to play.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
Precisely why I stopped paying attention to recruiting stars and services. Happy to get commitments from guys our coaches like and excited to watch them develop.

What? Only a 3 star? The Buckeyes would never look at him.
Hmmm, was Louis Hansen only a 3 star? How did that turn out?
Hmmm, was George Johnson only a 3 star? How did that turn out?
Was Quintel Kent only a 3 star?
Was Gabe Newburg only a 3 star?
How about Joey Velasquez?
Cornell Wheeler?
Look, there are 3*'s that work out great. There are 3*'s that don't. Same for 4 and 5. The truth is, the higher the rating, the more likely players are to be of overall value to the program. That's not just an assertion, a search through mgoblog history will show a couple of fairly in depth evaluations that show this to be true.
Does that mean a program that recruits at 9th-15th will always lose to programs that are at 2-5? Obviously not. It also doesn't mean that recruiting good players (where good is a consensus that a player is likely to succeed) is unimportant.

This is a 100% valid comment. I think two huge factors are: (1) Is the 3-star someone we grab at the end of the cycle just to fill open spots or is he someone we have identified and targeted and would take early in the cycle. I feel a lot better about the latter. (2) I am starting to get convinced that NIL going to highly rated players before they have demonstrated their value to their teammates and the coaches is something to avoid due to potential toxicity in the locker room. If I am right, and if the staff agrees, then we may be out of the picture for more 4 and 5 star recruits than we used to be. And I am fine with that. If you tell a kid there is NIL money but only if they come and prove they deserve it, I think you have put in place a system where you will miss out on some top tier guys but you also greatly reduce the risk our getting guys who feel entitled. The players we want are the highest-ranked, hardest working guys, who are willing to bet on themselves. And if I had to start compromising on those three traits, I compromise on the ranking.
December 2nd, 2023 at 10:21 AM ^
Agreed. I think it's silly to poo-poo higher rated players. I recall many MGo members back in the Dantonio era poking fun at Staee for grabbing a lot of 3 stars. Obviously culture fit is a huge thing, but remember Jabrill Peppers? He was a team changing talent

Profile say he is 2025 not 2024
December 1st, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
Yes, that's my bad. He's 2025. Mods plz update if possible

Kid has a very interesting offer sheet. Michigan, Arkansas, Ark Pine-Bluff, Memphis, and Sam Houston State. Should he commit, seems like another diamond in the rough kind of player.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
Michigan is recruiting this kid like he's a top 100 player. They love this dude for whatever reason. Its a classic case of Jay Harbaugh finding some random off the radar kid before he blows up
December 1st, 2023 at 10:23 AM ^
The kid lives in a town of a population of less than 700 people.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
Lived in the next town over for a few years. Bauxite is tiny. Can see him flying under the radar.
December 1st, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
He's also a 2025. Tons of time to move up boards. Which he probably will if he commits to Michigan
December 1st, 2023 at 9:41 AM ^
User Gooseggs mentioned Wimberly's offer list. Nothing really "pops" in the profile:

I'll trust the staff on this one. I think they've made more good judgments than bad judgments.
I stood next to him at one point during the game and his listed height seems to be accurate.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:03 AM ^
Thanks for the link. Says his Primary recruiter is Jay Harbaugh. I don't need to know anything else. Let's sign this kid!

6'1" 180 pounds is decent size for a junior safety. On the 247 page it says he ran an 11.45 100m as a sophomore which is an o.k. time. This site converts that to a 4.77 40 yard dash which is pretty good for a sophomore. I'm assuming he can get down to a 4.6 or so if he is still maturing.
December 1st, 2023 at 12:11 PM ^
That speed conversion doesn't seem right. If he is running 11.45 100, he's probably already a 4.6 guy.
December 1st, 2023 at 1:17 PM ^
The random internet site I found is wrong?!
Guy mansplains to a woman that when people are presented with fact they usually change their opinion. Woman sites two longitudinal studies showing that 95% of people don't change their opinions when presented with new facts. Guy says, "That's all well and good, but I don't believe it."
December 1st, 2023 at 5:28 PM ^
I agree.
Mostly because I ran an 11.6 100M and 4.70 40
December 1st, 2023 at 12:46 PM ^
DJ Turner came in @4.6 and ran 4.2 at combine. M s&c program unparalleled.
December 1st, 2023 at 9:47 AM ^
Wonder how many silent Ohio commits or flips... Surely they'll want it secret until late. Saying so now could be a problem at home with the fans.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:00 AM ^
I don't think it's as many as you might think, because many already got paid, to either commit or not take any more visits.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:04 AM ^
They didn't sign anything yet, they can take that illegal money and run and there is nothing anyone could do about it....if they feel so inclined.
December 1st, 2023 at 11:30 AM ^
OSU would never do that. Ask all the B1G coaches and ADs. OSU is above all that illegal stuff. They never had competitive advantage. /S
December 1st, 2023 at 11:34 AM ^
And their AD admits to Congress that they pay players $5k to take VISITS...where is the NCAA, too busy worrying about cheeseburgers instead of cash, unreal...
December 1st, 2023 at 11:33 AM ^
Yes, I thought of that. And then I considered how many Div 1 scholarship athletes would do that.
That is a fascinating question and I absolutely have no clue. I wouldn't think it would be that many but who knows. And you're right, what recourse would the school have?
Dante Moore got paid, right? Matt Rhule says good transfer QB's get $2M. I wonder if he'll get that much considering all the picks he threw.
December 1st, 2023 at 11:14 AM ^
5 Star Justin Scott flipped. There is smoke that 5 Star Jeremiah Smith and another elite guy (can't remember who) are also flip candidates for other schools.
December 1st, 2023 at 9:49 AM ^
Looking at his Hudl film he sure likes contact. Doesn't look like he played great competition judging by some of the highlights. I like that he plays multiple positions. Gotta trust the staff with their track record at this point
December 1st, 2023 at 10:06 AM ^
Maybe he's a svelte Michael Barrett.
December 1st, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
Sounds like a great kid, that verse speaks volumes to his character.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:47 AM ^
Yeah, he sounds really mature. Future use of the “X is 1000 years old” tag?

Love the flips to Michigan! Hopefully a few more to come.
December 1st, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
Yes, please! I have been on the Wimberly train since Michigan offered. No, he doesn't play great competition, but he's a beast. I was disappointed when he committed to Arkansas.

If Magnus believes, then I'm all in...
December 1st, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
Agreed. Magnus has a critical eye, which I appreciate.
