5 Days out...injuries, player interviews, random notes
Seems like a light content day so felt this would be a worthy post....
- Friend that works for the medical staff told me they do not believe there will be any player interviews this week from the ncaa. This is welcomed news and it's from someone I trust. He said he hasn't had that confirmed 100% but it's what he has been told and there is an "air of relief" in the building and a feels like they got some wind in their sails just hearing that. On FB some groups are posting the NCAA told UM that (my friend could not confirm that but may be the case)
- The interviews were intense last week. He didn't think anything new was really discovered but he's purposely focused on his job and not so much that stuff.
- On the injury front here is the literal text I got: "No team is 100%, but this is the healthiest I've seen them going into the game since I've been here"
I'm no insider, but I post some things on the periphery here and there as my professional has me dealing with UM (as well as osu and most other BIG schools).
On a separate note, I think people would be surprised how many people come and go randomly in and out of these BIG facilities. I just took a buddy of mine in and out of Purdue like I owned the place the other week (and on a wildly separate note regarding Purdue, RIP to Doug Boersma, one of the best ATC's in the BIG who passed suddenly before the season started. He was an absolute first class, top notch medical professional in college athletics).
Re osu: I'm there often...they are lifting weights extra hard! I'm actually not kidding. Their obsession with UM is weird and the feeling around there is they must win this game. Period. And they've been lifting weights extra hard!!!!!! Lot of good dudes that work on their support/medical staff so not crapping on those guys. I can't describe it, but the "feel" is much different at osu than michigan. It's hard to explain (I mean that in a positive way towards UM)
This post got really, really random...sorry about that.

I hope they have gotten so muscled-up that they get full body cramps during The Game. Really painful cramps. Like the ones you get in your foot in the middle of the night.
November 20th, 2023 at 10:32 AM ^
Like the ones Cryin Ryan Day gets when it's that time of the month?

I logged in just to like this.

Not sure about "they" getting full body cramps. I'd be fine with just Marvin Harrison Jr.
November 20th, 2023 at 3:27 PM ^
If anything they should be tapering. You get stronger from recovering from lifting, not from lifting.
November 20th, 2023 at 4:18 PM ^
Exactly. Lifting heavy weights during the season is from what I hear not ideal. Back in the day when I ran marathons, the last 2 weeks were a taper to allow your body total recovery by race day. I find it hard to believe they would be lifting any serious weights last week or this week for sure.

David Boston and Lauranitis were really muscled up until they moved on to the NFL and then they stopped taking their Bullough vitamins. probably no competitive advantage...nothing to see here.
November 20th, 2023 at 5:31 PM ^
Let us hear it for tendonitis, bursitis, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, and shin splints! I don't think muscle strength is the issue when line backers step out of the way rather put a body on it. Mental toughness has been the Michigan difference. (To be a honest, I think that mental toughness was part of the Tressel formula.)

"No team is 100%, but this is the healthiest I've seen them going into the game since I've been here"

Thank God. So used to having injuries at really key spots (Corum last year, Winovich and eventually Bush in 2018, QB seemingly every year for a while, just off the top of my head).
And while he hasn't looked like peak 2022 yet, this is the first time OSU has had to face a healthy Blake
November 20th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
I even think back to 2007 (Henne). A lot of years, I feel like if the game was played in mid-October, our fate would have been better.
November 20th, 2023 at 4:01 PM ^
Absolutely. The team last year vs Penn State was much different than by the end. So many years we've just had to say "what if so-and-so were healthy"
Off the top of my head, we won last year without Blake, Erick All, Mike Morris, Donovan's good hand, and Schoonmaker (he was half healthy)
November 20th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
Wasn't Jenkins banged up pretty good last year too? Edward's played with one hand in a cast.
November 20th, 2023 at 5:21 PM ^
Yeah, but The Don catches better with one hand than 99.9% of CFB.
November 20th, 2023 at 8:52 PM ^
Think about how we have rotated guys this year...it's been awesome.
November 20th, 2023 at 1:58 PM ^
Really need Roman Wilson 100%, hope he recovers quick after the Maryland bang-up. Our passing game is not the same without him stretching the field.
November 20th, 2023 at 2:02 PM ^
I don't think he was banged up. I think he is a really big part of the gameplan for the The Game and they gave a quick thought to next week without him and got him in street clothes as soon as humanly possible.

On the TV broadcast Jenny Taft said it was precautionary.
November 20th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
Were those light-sensitivity concussion symptom glasses that he had on, or just some weird fashion style?
November 20th, 2023 at 2:52 PM ^
Just dank shades no 🧢 fr
November 20th, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
Taft said mid-game that taking him out was precautionary, so unless Harbaugh or Moore say otherwise, we should assume Wilson will be on the field on Saturday.
Which is good news, because this game is truly all hands on deck.
November 20th, 2023 at 2:54 PM ^
That and when he was in the locker room, we had just scored twice back
November 20th, 2023 at 2:02 PM ^
double
November 20th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
Moore said he, Henderson, and Hinton are playing Saturday. Hinton a little surprising considering how much pain it seemed like he was in.
November 20th, 2023 at 3:59 PM ^
Moore is obviously much more connected and in-tune with what's going on with his players than I am, but it sure looked like Hinton wouldn't be taking another snap anytime soon. At least not this weekend. That man looked like he was in A LOT of pain.
No structural damage is a great sign, but I took it as we probably wouldn't see him until the postseason, or if he got really lucky, maybe we'd see him next weekend if Michigan can find a way to take care of business on Saturday.
November 20th, 2023 at 4:37 PM ^
Sometimes it's the scare that causes the scream..in the initial moment it got landed on and probably heard and felt some pops and cracks..not sure he plays but he dodged a bullet.
November 20th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
It's not definitive evidence, but that he got up immediately and didn't appear physically affected (his balance seemed okay, he seemed to be behaving normally on the sidelines) suggests that he's probably OK. He did have sunglasses on, but it was also extremely bright on that side of the stadium.
November 20th, 2023 at 4:40 PM ^
Great point on the brightness -- I actually had the thought during the game (of course I didn't bring my sunnies in, regretably) that the brightness was probably annoying to our players.
November 20th, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
Lifting extra hard within a week of the Michigan game is pure folly! A wise team would be not lifting or going with low weights to ensure everyone is as close to 100% on Saturday as possible.

"Five pound weights?"
"No, two and a half. I'm not going for bulk, I'm going for tone"
November 20th, 2023 at 3:35 PM ^
This has always been my refrain!
November 20th, 2023 at 6:23 PM ^
Better yet, repeated 12 ounce curls!
November 20th, 2023 at 1:54 PM ^
Sorry, but you're wrong on that one. Modern day strength programs aren't taking a week off of lifting or taking it easy because of a certain opponent. At this point in the year, they have a routine and they believe in it. S&C is all about getting the athletes' bodies to peak at the day of competition. They know when and how to lift during the week for their players' bodies to be recovered for Saturday
November 20th, 2023 at 2:37 PM ^
True and my comment wasn't directed at "this week" anyway. More of a "they have been saying this for two years" ie "WE LIFT SO HARD NOW!!! ARGH!!!!!"
November 20th, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
I gathered that from you. Just thought the comment from someone else about ohio lifting this week is cause for optimism from us is absurd.
November 20th, 2023 at 4:12 PM ^
We have Ben Herbert, they don’t.

Thank God the blog is back online. I was going through withdrawal over lunch
November 20th, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
I know, right? I have a lot of work today because of the short week and when I went to take a little break, I was sad to see the blog was down for maintenance. Fortunately it came back while I'm still resting.
November 20th, 2023 at 1:50 PM ^
Dude, I was refreshing the page like a mouse trying to get coke. Kind of embarrassing to be honest.
November 20th, 2023 at 1:49 PM ^
I was worried something horrible had happened and the board was crashing. Whew!

November 20th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
Ha! That's exactly what I thought. I assumed at this point that the DOJ arrested Harbaugh.
November 20th, 2023 at 1:49 PM ^
It forced me to take a look at Eleven Warriors for a moment.
