Rittenberg - Big Ten considering fines
Notice the use of past tense when discussing the suspension.

i found pettiti's FB page, seen here practicing asking for the fine....
November 9th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
Yep pay the fine, move on, beat Penn State
November 9th, 2023 at 5:36 PM ^
Paying a fine would be a terrible idea at this point, as it is an admission of guilt with a potential (not likely, but possible) NCAA investigation looming. Besides, it's been established that other teams have done advanced scouting, if they're not fined, then it remains unequal application of a rule that's already questionable.
That being said, it seems to be a face-saving gesture as Petite is now looking down the barrel of a gun pointed straight at him.

Not fine with me. As the two Michigan lawyers' letters make clear, even a fine is unwarranted because the sportsmanship policy can't be used to impose punishment where an active NCAA investigation is underway.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:50 PM ^
Agree... Not an attorney, but accepting and paying an unwarranted (illegal under current rules) fine would likely (could) establish a precedent for the B1G to act similarly in the future right?
We should still insist on B1G penalty be put on hold until NCAA adjudication is completed.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:58 PM ^
A fine is great because it doesn't impact the season or require an emergency injunction but we can still fight it legally.
And if it costs more to pay lawyers than it would to pay the fine... there's a money cannon around here somewhere I'm sure.
November 9th, 2023 at 4:02 PM ^
In this case, it’s better to pay the lawyers.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:41 PM ^
your fine
November 9th, 2023 at 2:49 PM ^
Can't say I'm surprised FINEbaum didn't break this story...
November 9th, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
My goodness!

Just sit their invoice in a pile and make them ship it to a collection's agency.
Let it accrue interest for years.
Never take responsibility for the debt.
Leave the B1G for the SEC after years of interest accrues.
Then it counts against them on their balance sheet when the B1G files chapter 11.
Maybe, idk 🤷♂️
November 9th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
A public reprimand and a fine- so he’s now saying the punishment may just fit the crime? I’ll take it.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
What crime? Pay them nothing.
Demand an apology and that Petiddy step down.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:38 PM ^
Previous contract offered to Jim + fine amount = new contract offered to Jim
November 9th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
Reprimand who? Stallions?
They should fine Michigan for having a rogue staffer and they should fine every coach that was involved which will only be Stallions.
Then they should announce their punishment including that no other coaches were found to be involved.
Then they need to fine every other school that received or sent advanced scouting information for stealing signs and the should fine every coach as well that knew or was involved. Then they should announce those penalties and coaches names.
Let’s have equal treatment of any school in the B1G.
November 9th, 2023 at 3:23 PM ^
He's gonna have to refurbish a LOT of vacuums to be able to afford a fine
November 9th, 2023 at 3:29 PM ^
Ha. We want them to set a precedent that they have to apply to every other B1G school and we know a lot of coaches can get called out.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:41 PM ^
I'd say a $1.00 fine is appropriate.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
Michigan didn't even need to hire PR and PI firms to make the B10 look stupid. This conference is a joke anymore, with the clowns running the circus.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:33 PM ^
They did hire a high powered law firm, but they had to do that. It didn’t take months of planning, like I’m sure those on the other side needed.
November 9th, 2023 at 4:18 PM ^
Correction - will need.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
Perfect. Pay the fine and lets move past this shit…after UM drops the details from its dossier on OSU. Would love to move the spotlight to where it belongs.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
Drop those details on the Monday before Thanksgiving. That'd be fun.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
Nope.
Drop 1/6th of the details on the Monday before Thanksgiving, 1/6th on the Tuesday, 1/6th on Wednesday, and continue the drip, drip, drip until game day morning.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:33 PM ^
Wait until OSU week to drop it so they have to deal with this headache leading up to the game.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:34 PM ^
Pay up, but on the condition that they open an investigation on the collaboration between other B1G schools to steal our signals AND broaden their ‘investigation’ of michigan to include where their evidence comes from, i.e. is another big ten school pulling dirty tricks and playing the media to gain a so-called competitive advantage in a most un-sportsmanlike way. Otherwise, we’ll see you in court. No rolling over for a ‘big fine’, as it still violates their own bylaws and I don’t have any taste for helping them save face without them treating certain teams in the league to a taste of their own medicine.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
We should fight that too. Fuck em. Release the binder too for good measure. A show of force will prevent this from happening again. I would only accept a fine if every other school also got fined and then they used that money to put radios in helmets.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:25 PM ^
I don't think Michigan will accept a fine at this point. I think they will still sue.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
Should be no accepting of ANY punishment until the NCAA investigation is completed.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:33 PM ^
Accepting the fine could be viewed as an admission of guilt... I would not unless they show me how they determine and on what ground... Again, without NCAA concluding its investigation.. This is a fine based on what?
November 9th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
Yeah, I think before you accept a fine you have the NCAA on the line also saying this is the whole deal. A fine from the conference and it goes away.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:41 PM ^
Agree that a fine will be viewed as an admission of guilt, and the cloud of negative perception will remain. The reputational damage this whole episode has caused Michigan cannot be underestimated, and paying a fine just reinforces that.
November 9th, 2023 at 8:42 PM ^
I agree. Those who are gleeful with this fine are being shortsighted. This isn't the bottom of the ninth inning. If this debacle has taught us anything, it's that we may still be in the early innings. Michigan shouldn't show weakness now when momentum is on our side. We need to set a precedent that this type of bullshit will not be tolerated and met with overpowering force (note that they clearly and problematically assumed the opposite about Michigan up until this turn of events). There is a ton of damage that has been done to the brand. Casual non-football fans think that it's a closed case that Michigan cheated. I think we need to sustain this counterattack.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:30 PM ^
That would be silly unless the fine is like $10 million. Even $100k is whatever - they did screw up hiring yet another nutjob, so they can take their medicine.
However, I still want to see the OSU skeletons put on full view.
November 9th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
You may be correct, given the stance taken in the response letter. However, they may be willing to pay a nominal fine if the Conference drops the matter, as it pertains to Michigan, regardless of the NCAA's ultimate finding.
They may look upon that as a reasonable settlement to put the matter behind us and the Big Ten. It would have to include no admission of NCAA rules violation, as any such settlement would not include the NCAA.
I would hope that any such settlement would stipulate that the Conference agrees to investigate the alleged collusion by other members with regard to decoding our signs and subsequent information transfer to others.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:26 PM ^
At this point, why not make them earn it.
I find it hilarious that Michigan just hit them with a 'you can't do that' letter and they realized that they changed their tune accordingly.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
Frankly I don't think they can do this, either.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
Nope. Show of force has already been made. Walk away, keep the binder in reserve in the event anyone wants to come back for seconds. No need to go nuclear if the other side has seen reason but needs to save a little face.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
I don't think that is going nuclear. The BIG should only be able to do this if they have the authority to do it, and I don't think they do right now. Again, the BIG has no evidence. Until and unless the BIG can show anything that would justify punishment I still think you seek to enjoin a fine.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:33 PM ^
Definitely fight it. Michigan already paid a big enough fine in the form of the tens of millions of dollars that the rest of this conference of leeches makes off of its brand.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
I think they would accept a fine. A fine, especially to the institution would be completetly in line with previous uses of the sportsmanship policy. That would not be worth opening discovery that comes with a lawsuit.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:40 PM ^
If the BIG had collected any evidence I would agree, but you cannot fine somebody on a whim. As of right now, there is no evidence that Michigan committed any violation of any rule. Hard to accept a fine for what, heretofore, is literally nothing. It is a close call. I cannot believe the BIG did this without obtaining evidence. Truly unbelievable.
November 9th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
A fine would be OK, but only after all of this is completely settled. Not a dime until then.
November 9th, 2023 at 2:23 PM ^
Let’s see the $$ amount first….
November 9th, 2023 at 2:30 PM ^
$ 1.00?
