MSU Coach Search - Urban
I know at first it was laughable that MSU fans felt they had a chance to land Urban. The fanaticism around his potential hire made watching from the outside enjoyable as RCMB splooges all over themselves anytime someone posts the GIF of urban changing from OSU red to MSU Green. Lately though, the smoke around him has gotten thicker. Camparoni is one of MSU's better trusted insiders and he's saying there's interest and it sounds like they are willing to pay him anything he wants to come. I can't imagine Urban would want to come to East Lansing and have his legacy tarnished trying to scrape out wins against OSU, PSU, and UM. Granted if the NCAA decides to make an example of Harbaugh, or he decides to run off to the NFL, the UM side of that could get interesting. Do you see Urban taking the job at MSU? USC/ND don't seem to be opening up any time soon and if he wants to coach again, I don't know if there's another big school who will be looking any time soon.

He's getting some free rounds of golf out of this, I don't blame him for expressing "interest"
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:05 AM ^
I actually hope it does happen** because I cannot think of much that would motivate Harbaugh to stay at M more than the opportunity to embarrass that Smarmy A-Hole.
** It almost certainly is NOT going to happen. Everything I have seen or heard is that several of the big $$ donors at MSU want this to happen — to the point that Urban could almost name his price if he decided to go that way. I have heard zero indicating that Meyer wants to take the MSU job. With his ego, I have a hard time seeing him entering into a situation that could reduce his legacy…..at least if other options exist. It makes more sense that Meyer would use MSU to leverage a bigger fish. USC and A&M aren’t in the market yet, but they easily could be by the offseason.

I thought he recently said he doesn’t want to coach ever again. Now of course enough money can change anyone’s mind but I don’t see him going to MSU
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:32 AM ^
This will not happen.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
How in the world could the MSU trustees approve this after the OSU Smith situation?
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:07 AM ^
Have you seen the msu trustees before?
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:07 AM ^
Yeah, for the MSU Board to do something that tone deaf, they would have to be truly dysfunctional. I can't imagine any board being that...hold on, I'm getting a note.

Urban.. Oil Money.. NIL.. Texas A&M
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:36 AM ^
That was one school I thought about. They threw buckets at Jimbo and that experiment isn't going well. Don't know whey they decide to cut their losses. I would think A&M would be a better opportunity than MSU. Still have to compete with Georgia, Bama, Tenn etc... but there's a massive difference between the state of A&M today and MSU today.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
Might depend on what kind of interest people are showing him. If, and that's a big if, he wants to get back into coaching MSU might be one of the better opportunities available to him. He does have a bit of a poisonous background at this point.
I don't blame MSU for trying. He's not Saban, but he's probably a top 5 college coach.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:39 AM ^
"Poisonous background"? The perfect fit for MSU.
November 2nd, 2023 at 12:15 PM ^
They couldn't hold onto Saban.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
A&M still owes Jimbo ~$80M. That's a hard check to swallow, even for oil barons...
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
that said I do think with NIL its way easier to turn a program around. If he went to MSU, I bet he finds a QB to transfer and a few other 5* types year one to be a competative but still flawed team year one (think 8-10 wins) then year 2 with a full recruiting class and a few more NIL induced transfers your looking at a team competing for the Big 10.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
It seems like the "powers that be" in College Station are reaching a point where they're thinking - "Yes, the buyout is a lot - but, what are we waiting for? Texas and Oklahoma - more "traditional" rivals of A&M will join the SEC next year. So, what are we waiting for?"
If and how A&M takes action will be interesting to follow.
As for Urban to EL... as others have noted - he would be a perfect fit. This is the type of role model that fits that culture...

So the MSU basketball program had some sort of rape scandal a couple of years ago (not minimizing just to lazy too look up the details), Nassar, and then Tuck came and went. Urban is notorious for the shot above and for enabling Zach Smith and then his circle of trust at UF. He is not a moral fortitude guy. MSU might as well go full Liberty and lean into rape culture and hire Hugh Freeze and the Baylor AD.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:33 AM ^
"MSU might as well go full Liberty and lean into rape culture"
They did hire John Engler to obstruct their rape victims' from obtaining settlements. Disturbin' Urban is probably a step up from that vantage point
November 2nd, 2023 at 12:46 PM ^
My thoughts exactly.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:37 AM ^
Go ahead. He's washed up.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:38 AM ^
This could be a ploy to drive up his asking price for the university he's actually interested in. Just like Tucker did to them.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:05 AM ^
Didn’t MSU lose essentially their biggest booster when Ishbia bought the Suns?
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:32 AM ^
What does that mean? He can’t still be a booster for MSU?
That’s the big rumor is that the Ishbias are giving him $15M a year.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:37 AM ^
I thought there was some provision where he had to pull out of his NIL deals at MSU when he bought the Suns? Is that not true? Not sure if that applied when paying for coach's salary
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:37 AM ^
He can still donate to MSU (as Ross donates to Michigan) - but can't take part in NIL.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:38 AM ^
I'll believe it when I see it.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:40 AM ^
What a lack of self-awareness this demonstrates. When MSU should be looking for stability and accountability, they pursue an amoral, two-faced (but winning!) coach. How 'little brother' is it that they would sell their soul just to compete with UM in football.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:10 AM ^
How do you sell something you no longer have?
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
always hated that he got out undefeated vs. UM. wouldn't mind to have another shot at him. I think he is tarnished enough and the game has changed enough in the NIL era that it's a coin flip as to whether he'd be able to be successful again.
After all the scandal at MSU I'd be surprised if they take a chance on him though.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:44 AM ^
Not a chance in hell he won't be successful (eventually) wherever he goes. The guy can coach, he's shown an ability to adapt to modern schemes/methods, and he'll have a 'good' NIL program wherever he ends up because he knows how to do that sort of thing. And whoever hires him will be as morally flexible as he is...
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:49 AM ^
Apparently, the Jacksonville jaguars, thought strongly in the alternative. It’s worth noting that was the one time that he really was on equal footing and unable to cheat his way to the top. Now with NIL money, the equal footing is again in play. It’s not that urban was some horrible coach, but what made him “great” was that he could cheat his Tail off at Florida and Ohio.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
He may be undefeated against UM as coach at OSU, but he lost his first try in the Capital One Bowl. If that doesn't count, then neither would any losses at MSU?
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:48 AM ^
We beat him in a bowl game when he was at UF
but yeah OSU
Barrett was short
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:54 AM ^
I mean he did lose to Lloyd Carr that one time.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
Urbz isnt going to take the job in East Lansing just yet. Rumor has it he's waiting to see if much better coaching gig is about to open up not far from there.

Ducks tomatoes & runs........
Edit: Signgate 7 should be interesting today.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:45 AM ^
Dude - you're too old to run from so many tomatoes...
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:04 AM ^
I get the //// but Urbs would keep bringing the talent to M, however the cuture they have now would be gone. Urban and Jim don't recruit the same type of kids.
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:34 AM ^
Does it even matter if Jim's fired for cause?
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
Saban couldn't win at MSU, Urban knows that.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
Watching the sparty nation pearl clutching about Michigan's morals while willing to hand Urban Meyer a blank check should tell you all you need to know about the faux outrage over signgate.
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:53 AM ^
It's amazing - wait, no it's not - it's pathetic that they're still on that after we beat them 49-0, with their QB running to the sidelines to get every play. It's almost like we didn't need their signs to make them eat their own shit...
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
I think it could happen. He's going to want to be in the big ten or SEC and MSU might be his best and/or only option. They've already proven that they will pay ridiculous amounts. Facilities are good enough.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
Meyer doesn't walk into dumpster fires, he walks into perfect situations only. So, no.
He'll be re-coaching Ohio State before any other big ten school, but in the meantime can spare as much time as he wants to mindfuck Michigan fans like he is doing these days.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:49 AM ^
Jacksonville was a bit of a dumpster fire on which he poured gasoline
November 2nd, 2023 at 12:35 PM ^
I think there's a greater chance they lube up the paddles and revive D'Anthony than sucker in Urbz to that trash fire.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:47 AM ^
I think he’d be an idiot, but he’s an idiot. If MSU is looking to refurbish their public image, he’s a gadawful choice. But maybe they’re just looking to win at all costs.
November 2nd, 2023 at 8:57 AM ^
MSU went with the check-box coach last time. He met DEI requirements but wasn't a good coach. They got lucky he decided to beat off on a phone call.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:43 AM ^
Tucker wasn't their first choice so it's not like they honed in on him because he "met DEI requirements." They honed in on him because they struck out on Fickell and got desperate, and even then Tucker turned them down until they doubled their offer.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:27 AM ^
what a lazy take, you think Mel only got hired cause he is black? And people are actually upvoting this. they wanted Fickell or Campbell who both turned them down. They went after Mel because of his ties to Saban. And that was only after they also got turned down by Robert Saleh and Brent Pry. They didn't exactly have their pick of the litter.
