John U. Bacon: The Leaking comes from Jim Stapleton

Submitted by Maison Bleue on October 25th, 2023 at 11:06 AM

He was on Morning Juice(97.1 The Fan in Columbus) this morning and said "As far as the leaking goes, I would guarantee that is where it's coming from(Jim Stapleton).

Though I'm sure Stapleton is an absolute dipwad, he probably believes with some reason that a lack of success at EMU is not reliably predictive of English's likely performance as Michigan HC.

Of course, English's performance as Michigan DC was also quite hit-or-miss.

English was our DC for The Horror and Horror 2.0 the next weekend when Dennis Dixon and Oregon introduced English and his totally unprepared Michigan D to the modern day read option.  People forget that these Mt Rushmore low points in UM football history fall squarely on English’s shoulders.

Not to absolve English for the complete lack of preparation for the read option, but the read option was a relatively new offense to college football at that time.  It's the reason Rich Rod was such a hot coach.  When Rich Rod was hired, Tressell went to I believe South Florida and studied with their coaches how to defend the read option because South Florida was in the same conference as West Virginia and they were one of the few teams that had consistent success against Rich Rod's offense.

Offenses in the Big Ten have rarely been at the forefront of innovation.  It's one of the reasons I like UCLA, USC, Washington and Oregon joining the conference.  Michigan, as well as the other current Big Ten teams, will be forced to play against teams who have offenses which are much more modern and inventive then what we usually see in the Big Ten.

Not to quibble, but, I recall Michigan’s introduction to the read option at Northwestern on 11/4/2000, 54-51.  Granted, it was not a shellacking like the one Oregon administered in Michigan Stadium almost seven years later, but it was a rude introduction just the same.

The thing about this is that any argument that you could make for English, you could have also made for Mike DeBord - also a coordinator under Lloyd and unsuccessful MAC head coach (at CMU).

Bill Martin made the decision not to promote from within and while his external hire didn't work out, none of the internal candidates have panned out as head coaches, either.

It's ironic that his revenge for Harbaugh may have kept Harbaugh from coaching The Vikings but staying as coach at UM. Looks like he's trying to come full circle on Harbaugh now.

Read that he got a minority ownership of The Vikings in 2005. Bet that's increased in value.

I have no clue, but posts mentioning him here on MGoBlog have been removed.

Apparently, he is one of Harbaugh's biggest critics. He is a minority owner of the Vikings and allegedly played a big part in why Harbaugh was passed up for the position.

Specifically from John U. Bacon's tweets:

As I reported in Three and Out, after Stapleton had been accused of sabotaging U-M coach Rich Rodriguez he wrote a 4-page letter refuting the charges, but still had his sideline pass revoked. He is now one of Harbaugh’s critics, hoping to persuade the Wilfs to reject him. (10/13)

He also sits on the NCAA Committee on Infractions, so, that's particularly telling, isn't it? When the NCAA comes to Michigan tomorrow, I would ask them who is leaking this information about their investigation and why haven't they shored it up?

A local Ann Arbor resident who:

1. Sits on the NCAA compliance committee

2. Is a minority owner for the Minnesota Vikings and allegedly told them to not hire Harbaugh last year after his interview

3. Is close personal friends with our ex-DC Ron English

4. Hates Jim Harbaugh intensely because he somehow believes Jim was responsible for Ron English not getting the U of M HC job when Lloyd retired

These people are always interesting to me. I just don't get the thinking here. So he believes that Ron English should have gotten the UM job after Lloyd and that is somehow JH's fault when he wasn't even around? The other thing that makes these people batshit stupid is that, ok Ron should have gotten the UM job, surely if he was qualified to get the head coaching job at UM but got "screwed", he would have gotten another big time job soon after that....right....right? Teams had to be lining up to swoop in and take advantage of UM's big mistake....right???

That's the key.  Assholes just double-down on contradictions that, to the rest of the world, illuminate their idiocy.  This is the narcissist mindset.  Negative data from others or the environment at-large is simply more evidence of the conspired array against me, that they then need to fight even harder and with even more vitriol and prejudice.

Since everybody in college football does this kind of sign scouting . . . how in the world does the entire SEC not have disgruntled former employees coming out of the woodwork to revenge-tattle that their ex-school has been doing it?

You think that Saban or Smart or [fill in the blank] haven't pissed off a bunch of lower-level staffers over the years?

Same for the Big 12.  And Pac 12.  And  ACC.  And . . .

There have to be 50 programs scared shitless that these revelations become a thing.

I think that's why a lot of coaches out there are dismissing it as just a trivial part of the game.  Because they are doing it and don't want it turned into an offense that actually becomes enforced.

Well, I think this would about answer your question, no? Not every former disgruntled employee happens to also sit on the one committee tasked with oversight.

Ross Dellenger on the Yahoo pod said something to the effect that the NCAA is investigating 20+ schools for NIL violations. (This also tracks - the NCAA is surely investigating other schools other than Michigan). You don't hear about any of those because the process is supposed to be confidential. As we've suspected, the NCAA's process re Harbuagh is about an ax to grind, and this would be the most likely suspect.
