Icarus falls to Earth
Although JJ apparently flew too close to the sun the first 2 weeks, fortunately his return to earth didn't result in his metaphorical death.
In fact, his statistics are still on par for a record breaking season in several categories. At the same time, Blake and Roman are still tracking well toward possible record years for Rushing and Receiving TDs, respectively.
I provided a snapshot of the averages needed for the remainder of the year, depending upon number of games played. Of course, breaking a school record without playing 15 games would be a pyrrhic victory. :)
Now, let's get back on track for a record season!

SIR, JJ MCCARTHY DOES NOT HAVE WAX ARMS
September 19th, 2023 at 11:25 AM ^
Additionally, Epirus was QUITE FAR from Crete. Strictly speaking, to have a Pyrrhic victory would be like traveling all the way to Los Angeles to play USC for an in conference regular season game. NONSENSE! (which is perhaps a poor example, let's not even speak of the fact that Troy is ostensibly a completely different continent!)
Anyway, I could go for some souvlaki.

Just like the Battle of Bunker Hill.

I thought most of the fighting was on Breed's Hill..

Never argue with an angry marsupial. Just back away slowly.

Frankenstein never scared me; marsupials do, because they're fast!"

I'm feeling a steamroll coming on Saturday. Akin to the PSU game last year.
September 19th, 2023 at 12:07 PM ^
I hope you are right. I see a game similar to most of last year's conference games - 13-6 at halftime but Michigan pulls away in the second half.

You must be a NYT Crossword solver. Icarus was in there yesterday (Here Comes The Sun).

Are they on pace to break records though? They have complied these numbers against competition that is not even comparable to what they will see the rest of the season, so I do not see how one can extrapolate that out for the rest of the season. I would be interested to see what the record holders did against their three weakest competitors. I would also be interested in seeing how long they played in the three weakest games since this year they were pulled quickly, which could offset the bad competition.
September 19th, 2023 at 11:24 AM ^
Agree. Extrapolating stats from effectively open practices to Big 10 slate with actual defenses (albeit some awful offenses) seems not useful.
Also JH was not at the controls of play calling. So we will see if he reverts to his mean play calling.
Rutgers seems to have a legit defense, despite a LOL offense mostly. Will be interesting to see how the entire offense especially the OL and run game does vs an entire team with players who won't be in sales or accounting in 2 years.
And if Harbaugh let's JJ air it out more than 22 times.
September 19th, 2023 at 11:28 AM ^
I'm expecting a replay of 2021—an offensive sludgefart that is exciting solely because the score is closer than we'd like.
September 19th, 2023 at 2:06 PM ^
well, i mean harbaugh did just say in a press conference that the goal is to win by 1
September 19th, 2023 at 12:59 PM ^
Correct, none of this is useful, we're just distracting ourselves from work for a few minutes.
September 19th, 2023 at 6:49 PM ^
Well look at you, Mr (/ Miss) Responsible and not being distracted for a few.. hours.. like my friend
September 19th, 2023 at 11:18 AM ^
I saw a few people comparing JJ's INTs to TCU (which I don't really agree with), but people seem to forget how well he played after making those mistakes. Hoping for a huge comeback game against Rutgers and moving forward
September 19th, 2023 at 11:36 AM ^
You mean how well he played when the game was in TCU's hand and they put in prevent defense?
September 19th, 2023 at 2:58 PM ^
UM had the ball with a chance to go ahead at the end of the game. Tell us again about how the game "was in TCU's hand."
September 19th, 2023 at 11:23 AM ^
Currently rooting for a 12 games stretch where the number is 0 and the categories are Passing Interceptions and re-opening of the fan bases deeply embedded TCU scars.
Woof - all to the good if JJ's one clunker comes against Bowling Green State University.
September 19th, 2023 at 11:37 AM ^
Agreed. Nothing would be better than if JJ has already had his weakest outing of the season.
Hoping that the entire team sets admirable records this season.
Go Blue!
September 19th, 2023 at 11:32 AM ^
It's hard to believe that the records for passing TDs and rushing TDs are 25 and 26 respectively. Both seem so low. Let's make better records.
September 19th, 2023 at 11:33 AM ^
I agree with everything as long as we promise never to say "law of averages" like Alex's game recap post. I was le triggered
September 19th, 2023 at 3:02 PM ^
Mercy.
May we say "regression to the mean"?
September 19th, 2023 at 11:42 AM ^
And like a Phoenix, JJ will emerge born again from the smoldering ashes of the BGSU game.
September 19th, 2023 at 12:13 PM ^
One of my favorite Craig Ferguson running gags is them saying "Careful Icarus" to each other. I say this to my kids now when they are doing something where it warrants saying. https://youtu.be/HTuyuUDWo2g
September 19th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
This wouldn't have happened had they been wearing proper undergarments. Specifically Daedalus.
September 19th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
My son got a high five from JJ Saturday.
Clearly this photo depicts him reaching for the lowly peasants.
September 19th, 2023 at 1:24 PM ^
I would've gone with the Bruegel as a depiction of the fall: J.J.'s game was just a blip on an otherwise sunny and rather pleasant day.

The importance of perspective.
September 19th, 2023 at 5:30 PM ^
This observation from Gerdeman is pretty relevant if not prescient:
It should also be noted that all three interceptions came while McCarthy was being pressured. So rather than wait for him to screw up, it’s best to just try to make it happen. And then don’t forget to keep contain.
He's the only one who noticed, and we can expect to see a lot of pressure on McCarthy the rest of the way.
September 20th, 2023 at 2:04 AM ^
Also from Gerdeman:
"The entire story with this game now comes down to whether or not this was just a bored and overconfident quarterback. I think there is merit to that thought, but what this performance has done is let everyone know that while JJ McCarthy may complete 87% of his passes 60% of the time, he’s still liable to leave a few gifts on your front porch just like last year.
But that doesn’t mean you can rely on it. Because as we’ve also seen, he will beat your ass like you took a swing at his dog."
September 19th, 2023 at 6:32 PM ^
Now the crowd breaks and JJ appears
Looks Harbaugh in the eye
As he spreads his wings and shouts at the crowd
In the name of Yost, my father I'll fly
His eyes seem so glazed
As he flies on the winged helmets of a dream
Now he knows his coach is suspended
Now his wings turn to ashes his stats now upended
Fly on your way, like an eagle
Fly as high as the sun
On your way, like an eagle
Fly, touch the sun

At halftime I thought Wilson was going to break the receiving TD record. I no longer do lol.
