Shocking development. Truly can’t believe the Ohio kid with the diehard OSU fan family announced on his father’s birthday… for the Buckeyes.
IMO, the transfer portal makes situations like this a lot less dire. More chances to fill in gaps in the roster down the road with guys who are older and about whom more is known.
Elite CBs are hard to get out of the transfer portal as well.
Let’s keep an eye on UGA
23 Took 4 CB’s (3 are 4*) + 1 from the portal
22 took 4 CB’s (all 4*) + 1 from the portal
21 took 3 CB’s (2 4/5*) + 1 from the portal
20 took 2 CB’s (5* Ringo went pro, the other, a 4*)
Seems like there could be some good football players unhappy over inability to get on the field soon.
The Portal is not a cure all thing. Those players entered the Portal - in most caces - because they couldn't cut it at their previous school. I am getting concerned with our CB situation. Really thought we were going to get Scott after that other Ohio CB committed to OSU
Quick! Someone tell USC and CU! Deion will be crushed!
What I'm saying is that a NC seeking school has to build its roster with good HS recruiting-development and then fill it in with just 2 or 3 out of the Protal. Go take a look on how many Georgia and Alabama pull from the Portal. If I remember correctly, could be wrong, Georgia didn't use the Portal at all either last year or maybe it was the the previous year .You're using extremes and let's wait and see how Deion does.
So precisely what we have been doing. A possible All-Conference Edge Rusher from a G5 school? Go get him. The best player on Nebraska’s D and he’s a freshman? Go get him. 2 NFL level lineman from the PAC-12, let’s take them.
I get your point and also get some of the negs your way. Truth is we are a National Championship competing school this year and the two previous ones. Our development specifically on both lines have made us a destination for not just up-transfers, but quality starters from Power-5 schools. Our CB situation may turn out to be just fine this year. Walker and/or McBurrows could be really good and they’re both sophomores as is Will. We also have Jyaire and others.
If there is one position group I’m thinking about the portal for 2024 is QB and WR. The former could be very easy if they are a one year guy looking to go to a better program (think a Devin O’Leary type). WR is probably never going to be spectacular in this system but I think we do need more depth there.
Agree with you just have a problem with people who think bringing in a ton from the Portal is a cure all thing - it's not. Yes, we're doing it the right way - especially with the OL we've acquired recently through the Portal. But I'd rather have our staff develop young HS recruits their own way which they're obviously very good at - really good at.
I was reading on Eleven Warriors that OSU pulled in the top-rated CB and Safety this last Portal - they need help back there and know it - and neither are being projected as starters, just backups. One more time, the Portal should be used as a last resort for help needed at a few weak positions and not a source to build your team around. Many of those Portal players are there because they weren't good enough at their previous schools to see the field
Georgia signed 6 out of the top ten linebackers this last class. Each one would've been our highest rated LB signee the last 20 years. UM has some amazing coaches but as of right now its like running an NFL franchise thats traded away the first two round picks for a decade.
The HS football in the state of Georgia is phenominal right now and probably the best in the country when you stack their state population up against California, Texas and Florida. They pick and choose in their own state and then start targeting national recruits, Oh, and having back-to-back NCs doesn't hurt
You are right but its just next level with Georgia.
We know what you’re saying, what we’re telling you is that you’re just wrong
You did? Why? His dad was a big Buckeye fan and he was announcing on his birthday.
And he changed it from early June to his Dad's birthday. IiRC
Huh?
If you have an elite program (which Michigan has), the portal is as close to a cure all as it gets.
Take Drake Nugent, LaDarius Henderson, Ernest Hausmann, Josaiah Stewart, Josh Wallace, and James Turner off this team and we're not taking national championship while we are in July.
That's not including Barner or Hinton who should also contribute this season.
This is a blow, but Michigan has done a damn good job with the portal.
Oluwatimi and Okie both game up HUGE last season.
You can't build a team from the portal, but plugging guys at key spots? Absolutely. Especially grad transfers who just want to win. If there is a championship contender and I'm a solid starter at a school that has no shot...I'd have give Michigan a strong look.
Win at the highest level, raise my draft stock AND get NIL? That is a very strong recruiting pitch for a upperclassmen or grad transfer.
Michigan is going to have to rely on this hybrid model that has been so successful the past couple of years.
Personally, I'd rather have a #5 class and top transfers over a #1 class with no transfers (I know that's not the option)...it's good to have some "known" commodities join the team every year.
It's quarterback where it becomes somewhat of a problem (unless you're Lincoln Riley at OU). Other than that, plug the holes and let's roll.
OSU will have a top 5 class along with 4 SEC teams. We might stay in the top ten but our momentum right now is not good.
We should be more discerning in our quest ro be concerning.
For all you ‘crootin doomers out there, we would all do well to remember the 4 alarm fire we all reported in QB recruiting after Dante Moore committed to Oregon and CJ Carr committed to ND. When the top 2 targets on the board fell away, the staff simply went out and got Jaydyn Davis and put themselves in the catbird seat for Bryce Underwood. I think narrowly missing on one CB is something that can be remedied
Also worth noting is that signing day is a LONG way away. If it was really that close, we should still be recruiting him. I could see OSU having a down year this year, and when we beat them again we have got some momentum. To be honest, if we landed him the talk all season would be us trying to keep him committed.
So his gift to his dad is for him to watch his son lose to Michigan? Twisted.
I wonder what he'll do when he watches Michigan, for a third time, completely destroy OSU's D in November? Will he then flip to Michigan? Me thinks that could be a huge possibility when OSU fires Jim Knowles.
Thats called being a two-timing gold digger. At that point would you still want him?
A little shocked actually, that after a "tough, confusing" decision he'd troll Michigan by pulling the osu jersey out of a Maize & Blue backpack!
I have a player I'm looking extra forward to seeing get toasted in The Game now - or anytime really!
The backpack was an ass move.
He knew where he was going all along. Wasn't tough to decide, wasn't ever confused. I think this was a troll job from the beginning.
Pulling this shit is almost as sweet as signing with them to an OSU fan. He knew what he was doing day one and he milked it for all its worth.
Disagree that he wasn't ever considering Michigan, or that rumors he'd told some fellow croots he was going to "commit" to Michigan are false.
Do believe he'd made up his mind from the day he switched his "commit" date to his dads Bday tho...
It's very on-brand for OSU. Personally, I hope they keep up with the hubris and third-base culture. They can win every single off-season if they want to.
Toe meets leather at noon.
He got me with that trick.
CB recruiting is definitely a concern at this point.
Look at the recruiting profiles of DJ Turner, Vincent Gray and Gemon Green, and then tell me how concerned you are.
I am sure Clink will find/flip some guys but we have 0 commited and I am unaware of any guys we are even in on at this point.
Wait, how many of you actually watched him live stream his commitment? 🤦♂️
I just happened to check right when he was announcing so watched. Not sure why you care what other do with there free time.
It genuinely is odd how so many fans refuse to put any blame on Clink
Yeah! Clink should’ve murdered his dad or something. FFS, the fact that it was down to OSU and us for a highly ranked Ohio kid whose dad bleeds scarlet and gray shows how awesome Clink is.
Look, as long as our DB play is at an elite level, I'll be happy with Clink, but I do think there is room for reasonable criticism of his recruiting strategy this cycle. Corner is a already a position we're thin at and we have zero commits with no true targets left on the board. That can't happen. 2nd place counts for nothing in recruiting, so unless we actually start landing some of these Ohio kids, I think it's fair to question why we're expending so much time/energy on them. Who knows if we could have landed some of our other targets like Nichols or Grimsley, but spending so much of spring and summer prioritizing the fruitless courtships of West/Scott couldn't have helped.
Remember Zordich's recruiting? I think its just that getting elite CBs is really hard. They are in demand from every school.
Now maybe Clink is spending too much time area recruiting vs position recruiting. Because he's been assisting with DL and LB recruiting for guys in the midwest.
I don't remember which players Zordich did or didn't personally recruit, but we did land plenty of highly ranked CB recruits during his tenure -- Hill, Long, Thomas, and St-Juste, to name a few.
And whataboutism aside, I'm not saying Clink deserves criticism for any single recruiting loss. I'm just saying that I think it's fair to question the overall CB recruiting strategy since it's taken us to a place where we have zero commits and zero remaining true targets.
Shocker
for him, too, to be underdeveloped and lose the game every year
Recruiting has not been good lately. Started off good and have pretty much lost out on every good recruit the last couple months.. shouldn’t be having this hard of a time pulling in top recruits after the last couple seasons
We have 25 guys in the class already. We are going to lose battles based on that fact alone.
Boo carter, Justin Scott, Bryce west, Scott jr, Aaron chiles, Nichols, Robinson, Tatum etc. that’s a lot of top guys we missed out on just the past couple months when we were leading for a lot of them. Something ain’t right..
The 25 guys we got were also coveted by other programs. This is what happens. The important thing in the macro for me is that we made OSU work, down to the wire, for a guy that should have been a layup for them. That alone is a shift in the rivalry.
TING!!
This would have been unthinkable even 2 years ago.
Yall got Terelle Pryor’d with this “its coming down to the wire” shit.

too soo...
eh
i'm ok now actually.
...
finally
Boo Carter, Bryce West, Scott Jr stayed home.
We weren't going to wait for Tatum and have an elite RB
Chiles and Scott are $$$.
It is recruiting. We are going to lose battles and we regularly do. There is nothing wrong so stop being so concerned.
You are right We are going to lose some and other colleges are going to lose some. When a player commits to us another school is saying the same things. It is just the nature of recruiting and not something to get upset about. 5 years ago we wouldn't even had a chance with Scott or West and if OSU didn't pay players and wasn't a team that competed in the playoffs I think we would have gotten those guys. Reading why Scott choose the Buckeyes is funny and really to me not a good answer. All the things he mentioned except for his family being diehard fans Michigan is better at and would be a place where the people are more trustable.
