Let’s Go Blue Wings!!!
nicely done
I found myself stuck in Columbus one night and attended a Blue Jackets game. I shouted "Let's Go Blue!" throughout the game, but I noticed that the Columbus fans strangely shout "Let's Go Jackets" instead. Apparently they have forgotten the color of their coats.
I do kinda wish they were a team with blue colors. All the best Michigan teams use blue - whether Blue or Honolulu Blue.
Detroit Ice Devils would be cool.
All the best teams wear blue in Detroit besides probably the best team in Detroit, the wings. I know what you mean, but it’s the only exception I’ll make to wear red
Ice Devils? You must be trolling.
One of the Original Six. One of the most iconic teams. One of the best logos in all of pro sports. And you want to change something?
And you want to change it to a name that belongs in the ECHL? And to something that evokes the horrible disappointment of the 95 Stanley Cup Playoffs?
Yours is one of the worst comments on this site in 2023.

Good signing; Go wings!
Too bad no Fantilli.
The one that really hurts was Hollands parting gift of drafting Zadina ahead of Quinn Hughes.
Kenny Holland’s last 5 years were pretty piss poor.
Nice!!
Hate seeing him leave Colorado. Good signing for wings
nothing personal but fuck the Avs
in perpetuity
they are the equivalent of the buckeyes in my mind
My two best buds got me a framed, autographed photo of the turtle moment for my Bar Mitzvah. 25 years later, still hanging in my bedroom.
that is love
you ought to make it a wall mural in your garage/basement/man cave.
Space Denard has made an abstract mural using a career's worth of underutilized shoelaces for the man cave
i think you need to post a picture of that for the better understanding and appreciation of your mgobrethren and mgosisteren.
Since it is not real, I have asked my friend Bing Image Creator to assist:
the gif that keeps giving
I get goosebumps when I see this. Was watching the game on cable (Pass, maybe). March of 1997.
Yup, and the best part was staying up to watch the game a 2nd time since Pass always replayed the games right after.
I was attending MTU (Michigan Tech) at the time and will never forget that game. It happened on the anniversary of my fathers death, making it that much more of a powerful memory.
I remember two interviews from the '97 championship runs of the Wolverines and the Wings. One was Shanahan and I don't remember who was interviewed from the Wolverines, but they were saying essentially the same thing. I remember thinking that what they said indicated a championship mentality.
I think we were up 3-0 on the Flyers and a reporter asked Shanny something like," Was he excited about being on the verge of winning a Cup?" With a stoic face, full seriousness, he answered and said, "We haven't won anything yet. Everyone knows the hardest game to win is the one to close out a series. The Flyers are playing for their season over there." (It might not be exact but it's pretty close.)
And I remember a Michigan player saying the same thing going into one of their big games down the stretch. Championship focus and mentality. No one was celebrating anything. Their hearts and minds were fixed on finishing the job.
(edited for clarity)
Well said by Shanny. It's the hockey version of the old adage, "An animal is most dangerous when he's cornered." At that point, he's going to fight like hell.
I was working at a school in Colorado at the height of the Wings-Ava rivalry (I always called them the Nordiques, which did not win friends and influence people). Anyway, I was asked by the mom of a 4th grader if I would be willing to use her two tickets and take him to Red Wings-Avs game on a Saturday afternoon when she had to work (flight attendant, and a single mom of a good kid who struggled fitting in, but loved hockey - especially the Ava). I was actually honored and took him to the game. That turned out to be the game where Hasek skated down the ice and slid before getting to Roy. Anyway, I’m not proud of this but I was only like 29 or 30, and I could not keep my fandom in check. I ended up yelling back and forth with a fourth grader who was in desperate need of a male role model. Anyway, I was not the best role model that day, but we both had a good time and we actually bonded over that experience. Sometimes, good can come from hate (if the hate is only sports-related)
And the single mom? MGoBlog needs to know!!
My favorite excerpt from the wikipedia article summarizing the brawl
Fuck the Avs, always and forever.
this pleases me greatly. welcome back to the mitten.
didn’t overpay either. he should be worth every penny.
Many are saying it is an overpay, but you have to understand the Wings are hovering around the cap floor right now and the cap is expected to go up the next few years. That $5.1m AAV is going to end up feeling like a $3.5m AAV in a few years and it will be a really good deal.
This
he was gonna get $5-6m somewhere. Not for 5 years at his age but I’m ok with it. As you said, if he’s still a functional 2nd line C in 3 years that $5.1m gonna feel like $3m
Stevie is killing it today!
Go Blue! and Go Wings!
That's exactly the reaction I expected from you.
he's been waiting to post that for 13 years
“User name checks out”
That’s Compher-ting I guess? I’ll Copp to not following hockey closely since. . . Larks, I’m old.
that's not all Stevie-Y did:
Signed JT Compher for 5 yrs @ $25.5MM
Inked a forward, Sprong for a year; Justin Holl from Toronto for a 2 yr deal
2 goalies, including the FL Panthers vet. I perceived we were very weak in goal last year so hopefully this is a substantial upgrade.
Stevie Y is building the team in his image, and I couldn't be happier about that!
Let's Go Blue/Red Wings!
Is three the most Wolverine players the Red Wings have had? I'd be inclined to reckon so.
I think Ward and Knuble overlapped, but I don't remember if there was another Michigan man on the roster back then. Then of course you gad the Larkin/Glendening years.
I think so… they also had 3 going into last season as they had signed Steven Kampfer. Kampfer only played during the preseason and spent the rest of the year in the AHL and was then traded late in the season.
I miss watching the playoffs.... I pretty much stopped watching the NHL after Lidstrom retired and Datsuk left.
Feels like the Lions and Redwings are getting ready to flourish.
Lidstrum retired?
How's Keith Jackson doing?
They did a lot of things just to do a lot of things today. Compher is pretty much the same player as Copp, so it's not really adding anything unless he's looking to deal Copp and Compher is an upgrade at the position.
Yzerman is signing a lot of ex-1st rounders, and doing a lot of one-for-one position upgrades. Holland had created a team full of third and fourth liners, so it has needed a complete overhaul.
The problem has been that they need a guy who just scores goals, a killer finisher, and there haven't been any available. They're still a team full of set-up men (even Larkin), and Compher is another one.
Being healthy will move the needle more for this team than the moves they made today.
Yup, a 6'2"-6'3" finisher would be awesome. Like when the Wings added Shanny. He put us over the top for grit and physicality, and that's when we started to win Cups.
After the back-to-back losses in Ottawa last year, it was obvious we were lacking in that area big time. We weren't even competitive.
Maple Leafs' fans are ecstatic that Holl is out of Toronto. He was brutal during the playoffs. But right-handed d-men are in short supply these days - especially in Detroit.
Hopefully he can redeem himself this year with the Wings come playoff time
That’s 5m+ for a guy who scored 17 goals and doesn’t bring much more. I get he’s a UofM guy and all, but i don’t love it. He’s not a 2nd line guy unless you are wearing blue-tinted glasses…hope he kills it though
I'm sure glad he didn't resign.
