Announcement expected: Payton Thorne to Auburn
What will all the State fans who said he really wasn't worth keeping anyway, and will probably transfer to some small name, unknown school so he can be a starter, do now?
Someone ask those sources about Hunter Dickinson
They're already screaming tampering. The mental gymnastics MSU fans are doing right now with their portal guys is so funny. Did they get passed on the depth chart or was there tampering? Is MSU better without them or is Brantley a huge win to get back?
Nice synopsis. That's exactly what's happening.
Well with Thorne it is Hugh Freeze so even if it's a desperate, overemphasized notion it's probably at least 50% right.
Hugh Freeze only tampers with Christ.
“if Thorne can’t handle the pressure here at MSU wait until he gets to Auburn and has to deal with SEC fans”
They really are a strange bunch.
Of course there’s tampering. Every team tampers right now. Even MSU. Get over it! You’re being paid 10 mil a year Mel! Figure it out!
I thought Mel was embracing the new world of NIL and portal shopping to help MSU. Guess tampering/portaling is only cool when Sparty benefits
If any MSU fan is complaining about tampering, that's pretty rich considering Kenneth Walker spent less than 24 hours in the portal before commiting to the Spartans.
Is there any info on why Brantley entered and then withdrew?
I'm sure it will be a calm and collected reaction.
No doubt a slap in the face for the program....
John L's finest moment 🤪
Whatever happened to that guy.......
Do you mean before or after he went bankrupt?
the short form:
If this comes to pass and he winds up starting for them, I'll spend a few seconds every week checking Auburn's most recent box score. Very interesting.
That would be quite the indictment of Auburn's current QB room.
....and staee's.
Or he does well, and it's an indictment on Mel's coaching. Which one is more likely?
It seems to me to be more of an indictment on Mel's coaching and program. Did Thorne have the WR and TE talent to pass the ball too? How about the MSU OL line? There are other moving parts to Thorne leaving MSU and it may be all of the above. As for the Mel Tucker program, it starts with the culture there and it went downhill starting with the tunnel incident. It was going downhill before that.
He absolutely had the receivers to throw to. And if “chonky” is important then he had the TEs too. One year he even had a RB. But no. Never an O-line. Probably not coaching either. Or scheme.
Thorne looked like crap last year, was likely injured and his passes looked like it.
He had plenty of WR support and missed at least half of his 3rd down attempts.
He isn't going to be drafted, SEC is above his pay grade.
Thorne is good enough for the SEC (though he won't get drafted) and here's my Ted Talk about that:
The SEC isn't about Thorne's pay grade any more than the Big Teb was. And how many SEC QBs get drafted from the majority of the teams anyway? Aside from a few truly elite teams, the majority of that conference is as average and blah as any other conference if you exclude the top teams. Look at Auburn itself plus the likes of Vanderbilt, Missouri, Kentucky, Miss St, Arkansas. All average teams. Then add in the SEC's usual rotating cast of underachievers like TAMU, Florida, and Ole Miss and the fact that the league replaces the Big Ten's 9th conference game with an FCS opponent, and their final records all look at least one win better. Thorne will be as mediocre as any other mediocre SEC Qb.
Mel’s coaching? Come on man - don’t you recognize perfection when you see it. He’s as good as it gets and the perfect fit for EL.
Give him a raise and an extension.
Please don’t change a thing…
ngl, I hope Thorne does well at Auburn. The head asploding in EL would be so worth it.
You just hate to see it...
Hahahahahahahahaha!
...but more than that...
...you love to see it.
It's even juicier w their best receiver Keon Coleman leaving too
So I guess this means Dante Moore will start for the Spartans? ... oh wait.
TOUCHÉ
This might be one of the better MSU burns ever when it comes to describing a certain portion of their fan base.
I hate to say it, but with Dante being so flaky and clearly not the best at deciding on schools, wouldn't shock me if he transfers to state in a year or 2. Not like we're likely to have the guaranteed starting spot he demands.
I dont know if he'll transfer though. Playing for UCLA he will get to enjoy the warm weather and beach while having low expectations of winning. They just dont care there. As shitty as msu is they care more about winning than UCLA does.
bigger fish.
This sport needs to be better regulated. I'm no MSU fan, but they developed this QB into something serviceable and now he ditched them for Auburn???
I think you meant to write: “…he looked serviceable for one year when defenses focused only on Kenneth Walker III, and then fell apart…”
His number last year aren't so much different than the year before, though TDs were down. Attempts and Interceptions about the same. His completion % went up a little. Considering how much the offense became about him with KWIII gone, % going up a little means something.
Eh, his % going up probably has more to do with throwing more screens and short passes. As evident by his YPA dropping from 8.3 to 6.9 despite more completions. Went from 13.75 yards per completion to 11.07.
I mean, 2.7 yards per completion is a pretty steep drop. You’re talking about 50-60 yards a game at that point.
I think he's better than he's being given credit for.
Well that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. But the numbers aren’t backing that up. You cited his comp % increasing and I simply pointed out the mirage there
Even that year, I believe Thorne had more INTs than TDs in conference play. He was buoyed by a terrible OOC schedule.
Or...a player looked at what would provide the best options and opportunities for him and went to greener pastures?
Did the sport need to be regulated when Mel Tucker left CO for MSU?
No, no, no… that only applies to the players…
“Regulated” is a really weird way to say you think players should be forced to play wherever they commit to as a 17 year old…
....even if that school / program is a tire, I mean, couch fire, right.
Not sure if you forgot the "/s" or not, but he is a grad transfer who is showing that he is a reasonably smart human being and that all his brain cells didn't turn into mush while up in east landfill.
Yeah going to play for Hugh Freeze just screams intellect.
....vs. 9L Mel - FUCK YES!!!
Freeze's problems aren't on the football field. He wasn't as good at covering his crap up as Urban was. But the dude can coach. If he didn't have all that baggage, he'd woulda never been out of the power 5. If Thorne has a legit shot at being the starter at Auburn, he has a pretty decent shot at getting drafted, assuming he plays well and puts up decent numbers.
It's possible for the statements "it is good for players to have options" and "annual unrestricted free agency causes chaos" to both be true. There's a reason pro players (and college coaches for that matter) have contracts.
I'm not saying putting CFB players into contracts is the answer, but the transfer landscape is pretty bizarre.
