Minnesota vs Boston U Hockey Frozen Four - Thursday Open Thread
The game before our game. The calm before the storm. Gophers in regulation? Somebody win in regulation, plz.
5 PM ET on ESPN2
Our game is scheduled for 8:30. Separate game thread will be up later, but I'll post some U-M stuff here.
Just because ...
This is pretty much the way I think about hockey. Except for Michigan hockey! Go Blue! Beat Quin...yeah, beat those guys!
This remains the all-time greatest hype video in the history of hype. Imagine if the bear had the voice of James Earl Jones.
Hell yeah! Nanook attack coming at ya Quinnlimpiak!
Hopefully an Adam Fantilli preview.
while my sleep schedule would like a regulation game, a triple ot game may cause some tired legs on saturday for the winning side
That makes me feel very old, especially as it means it's been 27 years since I had a summer term class with Morrison, Botterrill and Luhning. Cultural Anthro, met the ROE requirement, 13 students. Prof had just gotten back from Peru (and didn't know much about hockey anyways) kept calling Brendan Brandon. Saw 'em on campus frequently that summer, when Morrison uttered the line, still quoted by my friends, upon seeing me walking my bulldog on Packard: I know dogs are supposed to look like their owners, but jeez...
Anyhoo, cool story bro, I know. Thanks for indulging me.
My stomach is already in knots, and U-M doesn't skate for another 4+ hours. I find when they are in the tournament, the NCAA hockey "playoffs" are the most wonderful and most terrible event in sports. I wish I could enjoy it more and be a little less terrified.
Since Quinnipiac apparently plays the system that most/all true hockey fans detest (think New Jersey Devils in the 90s when they beat the high-flying Red Wings), this one is going to be extra difficult to swallow. Hopefully we score first...and second...and last.
Go Blue!
Oh great/s/ THAT trap. The hockey version of boring, defensive, 0-0 decided on PKs soccer.
Yeah, that. Basically Notre Dame on steroids. I read last week that OSU didn't get a shot on net in the middle of the game for over 20 minutes. Hoping our talent can overwhelm them and score early.
Not sure what to think of this one. Could easily see Minnesota rolling. Could also envision BU crushing their dreams in a close game / OT game. Only thing I don’t think will happen is a 2+ goal BU win
All I can think to say is….
Go Blue!
LOL, "Uncle Grano"
Number 1 offense vs number 1 defense. Quiny has only given up 3 goals in one game this year.
I’m a firm believer in defense wins Championships, however I’m thinking Michigan in a 2-1 nail biter.
Michigan gets an early lead, forcing QPac out of their game, causing the game to open up even further.
UM 7, QPac 0.
I like the way you think, but there’s a reason they have only given up 3 Gail’s once all season.
They play in a garbage conference?
So does TCU!

Gopher loses an edge, ends up in the net and takes it off the pegs. OUTRAGE!
BU goalie makes some big saves early.
Gopher goal? No, waved off.
Gophers top line just crushed BU, but BU has Brady Hoke's horseshoe up their ass.
Wow, deflection gets through, bounces off the post, puck lingers in the crease behind the goalie, but is cleared.
How the fuck did Minnesota not score there.
Quick question for the board. I wasn’t lucky enough to watch the Big Ten Championship game, Michigan beat Minnesota, was it a convincing win, did Michigan control the game? How about during the season, how did Michigan fair against the Gophers. Life is busy didn’t catch to many hockey games.
Very evenly matched teams - I tend to think that the bigger ice actually helped us, the smaller, faster-skating team that could better use the bigger sheet. It will be interesting to see if we can do it back on a non-olympic sheet. Should be an entertaining, coin-flip of a game if we make it. It should have a Stanley Cup, Game 7, sort of feel.
Was an even game, but we were a little better. Pretty even series the previous time we played them as well.
They crushed as at Yost, but we had a ton of guys out sick that weekend.
OSU, is that you? Kidding. Mostly.
MN scored first and was still up 1-0 at the end of the 1st. Was wondering if it was going to be one of those games. But Rutger McGroarty got a couple goals at 3:12 & 3:46 of the 2nd. MN responded mid-2nd, and it was 2-2 after two. MN scored early in the 3rd (1:57), we responded at 5:29. Duke got the winner @ 11:46, and we held on.
It was amaizing discipline, took only two penalties, one in the 1st, one in the 2nd, killed them off.
I'm at the game (just in front of the faceoff dot to the right of the Minnesota goalie on the glass).
Kind of a shame they sell both games for one ticket. For a sold out game, this arena is half empty.
By the way my greatest Michigan hockey memory, I was 17 visiting my sister at Michigan, I was hanging out with her boyfriend (now my brother in law) watching the game in his dorm (west quad) after they won the title he ran out of the room with everyone, my sister told me not to leave his side, so I followed and ended up running through buildings, Law Library I believe, jumping for joy and having the time of my life!!
Boy the 1997 was a fun year, having a sibling at U of M!
Crosschecking on BU @ 5:51.
This is ending like 6-1 Minnesota or 2-1 BU and it's 50/50 which.
Penalty over.
Minnesota looks the much better team so far.
BU looks like the Red Army in those sweaters.
Boston!!!
Figures. BU scores first, 1-0.
Horseshoe warning elevated.
EDIT: That is TERRIBLE by Close.
MN hits the post!
1-0 Boston with PP coming. This is the result I'm cheering for but I can't even focus on anything right now.
Tripping on MN @ 11:49.
Cooley/Snuggerud/Knies line hits the post again. They're dominating, but Cooley just took a dumb penalty.
Elbowing on BU @ 13:49, under review.
