OTish: Miami has canned Josh Gattis

Linky.

One year removed from winning the Broyles Award and then immediately crapping on the program that helped him reach that achievement.  Mixed feelings to say the least.

I was inclined to side with him during his beef with Mike Locksley since he was our OC. It's pretty clear now Locksley was 100% right. Honestly the writing was on the wall before that. The year where Harbaugh "handed over the keys" was awful and the offense only steadily got better as it became more and more Harbaugh like again.

No mixed feelings.

It's shocking to me how regularly people are hired to lead and teach young people who in fact are themselves children. Gattis's letter upon his departure at Michigan was not just whiny -- it was a shockingly immature and ill-considered move, burning bridges unnecessarily just for the benefit of his own ego.

In fact, if I were Miami I imagine reading that letter would be a red flag, the first sign that he was not a good leader. "Don't get what you want? Blame other people!"

Good riddance, and I feel no hesitation in not caring about his termination by the Hurricanes in the least.

Of course the flip side of this is “okay I’ll go take this other job that’s offering me a promotion and a 20% raise.” “But what about loyalty?” “Oh you mean that thing where you’ll lay me off without a second thought if it makes the quarterly numbers look good?”

I tell my staff all the time if they're interviewing for another position I'll be happy to be a reference. The way I see it, the best way to move up the career ladder and boost pay is to change jobs. And if working and training under me made you a great fit for a better position with a 30% increase in pay, then I, as a manager, did a good job training you for more responsibility and deservedly higher pay.

All I can do is put people up for a promotion. I can't make decisions up the ladder to ensure the promotion is granted.

I don't begrudge anyone for leaving. And if I am worth my salt (and my pay and bonuses and stock options etc.) then I should be able to identify, hire, and train someone to do the job just as well.

“And if working and training under me made you a great fit for a better position with a 30% increase in pay, then I, as a manager, did a good job training you for more responsibility and deservedly higher pay.”

But why can’t your company provide that pay and those opportunities internally? Sometimes it’s because the business isn’t growing and you generally don’t have a need for more leaders / experts.

But too often it seems like companies are stingy with raises to the point their experienced employees are barely making more than than the going rate for new grad hires (much less new hires at their experience level) so the employees leave. But then you’ve wasted a bunch of time and money training an excellent employee for a competitor. Penny wise and pound foolish.

I have no problem with Gattis leaving. I'm not even 100% sure how I feel about "loyalty" (whatever that means) to a country, but certainly not to an employer. He had every right to move on, if he felt it was in his personal best interest.

But as a former employer, let me tell you, when people tell you they're leaving, even for a competitor, the only option is to swallow your frustration, wish them the best, and offer to be of any assistance you can. The same thing is true for employees wanting to leave.

Just ... damn. Whining and casting aspersions just can't help. It just can't.

Some people aren't that smart and will never get any smarter. They live in their own heads most of the time, and have little capacity for self-reflection and thus improvement. I actually feel badly for people like this -- it must suck to be stuck in this place. The only coach I can think of who seems to have overcome this is Lane Kiffin. He had a pretty rough, ego-driven start but has settled in.

I'd say the jury is still out on Gattis.  He's young, and has plenty of time to reinvent himself.  Many of us have been down this path in our lives.  Josh just got a Masters degree in the School of Hard Knocks.  I hope he does something with the education.

"The least", say I. Now that's out of the way, I think the man needs to take a step back, do some thinking and figure out what's next. I also think that Harbaugh and his various influences (and our rosters) made Gattis look much better than he really was.

And whoever hurt Gattis' feelings by indicating he wasn't ready to step in to a possibly departing Harbaugh HC opening? Was right.

(Edit/add: Josh? This time, tweet simple gratitude for the Miami opportunity, nothing more. It's better for your image/career)

There's definitely an argument to be made for that, but you could also argue the opposite. MacDonald is a big reason we lost the MSU game and did not go undefeated in the regular season. The defense could just flat out not adjust to the tempo MSU put out there, and had what must've been at least 2-3 "too many men on the field" penalties, all of which were extremely costly. And then the fact that KWIII just could not be stopped.

Did MacDonald make up for it in the OSU game? Absolutely. I'll trade a loss to MSU for a win over OSU every single year. And yes, if the strip sack wasn't overturned then this is probably irrelevant, but the defense was gashed that day and they let the one guy beat them that they could not afford to let beat them. That, along with those extremely costly penalties, was on MacDonald.

I don't think Gattis ever put Michigan in a situation that cost Michigan a game last year. Got close in the Rutgers game for sure, but a win is a win, I suppose. The offense did more than enough against MSU to win, and then against Georgia, I don't think there's anything Michigan could've done differently. You just tip your cap in that game and say "We got beat by a team that was exponentially better in all phases of the game."

I don't think that's fair.  The offense scored 20 total points against a bad Rutgers team, including zero in the second half.  That's a bad performance.  Thankfully the D saved the day.

Against MSU, the offense repeatedly stalled in the redzone, and turned it over on its last three possessions (including a turnover on downs) in the 4th quarter.  The defense had its struggles, but it also gave the offense multiple chances to win the game in the 4th quarter, and the offense didn't take advantage.  That was a team loss.

You reap what you sow is a common phrase.

But, you reap more than you sow and it comes in a latter season.

Gattis thought he could write his little letter and walk away unharmed.  But that's not how the world spins!

No mixed feeling here.  He should not have left the way he did.  Maybe he can go do some growing up and improve himself a bit now, I hope he does.
