John U Bacon: Harbaugh called Ono, did not call Warde
https://mobile.twitter.com/Johnubacon/status/1615113023022338048
I'm gonna be honest I've never had a positive opinion of Warde ever since the 2016 Ohio State gaffe. He hasn't exactly helped his case in the years since.
Someone on 247 proposed Beilein as the next AD and that sounds like a grand slam hire from a PR standpoint - I don't know enough about the ins and outs of the job + John's qualifications for those, but I wouldn't mind bringing him home.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:30 PM ^
Warde should go, but Beilein to replace him makes no sense. He's a basketball coach. We need an experienced AD who will be proactive, not reactive
January 16th, 2023 at 6:35 PM ^
Yes because a guy who got sick of the college "game" when it comes to recruiting and transfers is going to be a good AD when the landscape has changed 1000% since he left college? Im sure he would really get ahread of the recryiting process...(eye roll)
January 16th, 2023 at 6:49 PM ^
But how would he do with the recruiting process?
January 17th, 2023 at 7:34 AM ^
I'm sure he could slug through it, or something like that.
/too soon?
January 16th, 2023 at 7:09 PM ^
We need an AD who's willing to fucking do something.
January 16th, 2023 at 11:09 PM ^
This. The AD needs to roll up his sleeves and not be afraid to fight for what’s right.
January 17th, 2023 at 7:23 AM ^
And what proof do you or anyone on this board have that Warde doesn't fight for what's right?
This is my problem with this half assed commentary.
No one on this board knows if Warde fights, and his job doesn't require him to do so publicly.
He's in a high-profile job, not a public one (at least not his day-to-day). But people can't seem to understand that.
I personally have witnessed Warde fight for something, it was small, I've shared the story. But the point was that it was done behind the scenes...not in the public eye.
Again, I called Warde a B+ when he was hired and I'm not saying he's the right guy for the job. I'm not a Warde sympathizer.
But everyone saying he sucks at his job because THEY don't know what he does, it's just ass backwards. It would be like me calling you lazy and suggesting you don't fight for anything. How the hell would I know?
This board doesn't even know what the position does, yet they want to say the guy sucks and doesn't fight.
It's like saying Beilein wasn't a good coach because he didn't throw tantrums on the sidelines and micromanage everything like Izzo. He had a different method and was just (I'd argue more) effective.
Warde is the same way, he doesn't need to be Izzo...but that seems to be what this board wants. Despite the fact that his position doesn't dictate it, in fact, it's detrimental in his position because you have to rely on too many other people who have the final say on things. Ask Dave Brandon.
January 17th, 2023 at 7:51 AM ^
Technically he does a "public job" along with a "high-profile job". He works for a public university...
January 17th, 2023 at 7:59 AM ^
if you only know 1 side of the story, you just speculate as to what the other side of the story might be, and then move forward with your argument assuming that your speculation is correct...
it happens here all the time.... i think that's something that has been around a long time, but has been supersized by the interwebs.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:32 PM ^
Can someone explain what the 2016 Ohio state gaffe was? I've heard it referenced here a lot
January 16th, 2023 at 6:35 PM ^
I assume people are referring to the lack of hellfire and brimstone summoned forth from the athletic department after the questionable officiating of the 2016 OSU vs UofM game.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:54 PM ^
That’s just dumb. Whining about officiating is the ultimate loser’s play.
January 16th, 2023 at 7:23 PM ^
It isn't hard to make a public statement showing support for your football coach (after Harbaugh was reprimanded by the Big 10 for his comments after the game.)
Or make a public statement that you have asked that the Big 10 make some adjustments so the Michigan doesn't get jobbed in the future.
Warde's silence remains at an alarming level for someone in a leadership position.
January 16th, 2023 at 9:55 PM ^
Out of curiosity, why do these actions need to be made public?
I get Dave Brandon was a very public AD, but their work is supposed to be done behind the scenes. As long as Warde, or any AD, is doing what needs to be done then I don’t see why that needs to be accompanied by a public statement.
The “position of leadership” that is Athletic Director doesn’t inherently require being a public figure. I hope Warde gave the B1G hell for that game, but I don’t know what a public statement is going to accomplish that can’t be accomplished behind closed doors.
January 17th, 2023 at 7:25 AM ^
Answer: To make people feel better.
But there is ZERO evidence that it means he'd be any better at his actual job.
January 16th, 2023 at 7:47 PM ^
it was the most one-sided officiated game i've ever watched. and i'm not talking about the spot, which was a wrong call but understandable.
January 16th, 2023 at 8:04 PM ^
I checked your comments. You have complained MULTIPLE times about bad officiating. 100% a hyprocrit and your comments are worthless.
Grow up and actual take a stance on something.
January 16th, 2023 at 8:21 PM ^
mackbru may just be acknowledging that he, too, is an ultimate loser
January 16th, 2023 at 8:40 PM ^
Ahem, fact-checking is the ultimate loser’s play...
January 16th, 2023 at 8:54 PM ^
Agreed. That's just silly and a ridiculous reason to advocate his termination.
I have no idea information at all, but it wouldn't surprise me if Ono needed to get involved because 1) after saying last year that the NFL flirtation and drama would not be a recurring episode, it repeated itself 1 year later and WM really didn't care if JH stayed or left. 2) JH was asking for institutional changes with regard to transfer admissions and NIL that needed Presidential and Regent involvement for which WM has no authority to approve
Time will tell. The story will ultimately come out.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:00 AM ^
in JUB's next book, no doubt.
January 16th, 2023 at 9:18 PM ^
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and suggest that perhaps you did not watch that game. When your team loses, it’s always lousy officiating, but what went on that game from the refs was just over the top.
January 16th, 2023 at 9:57 PM ^
I generally agree, but they totally screwed us in the game. My brother was on that team. I will never get over that “loss.”
January 16th, 2023 at 7:57 PM ^
He gets paid enough to do the obvious.
January 16th, 2023 at 8:15 PM ^
Another poster who knows Warde from his UConn days said that was not true, Warde absolutely went to bat for Harbaugh on that, he just didn't create a public scene about it. Maybe Harbaugh wanted him to and that's just not Warde's style, but he did support Harbaugh 100% on that according to the poster.
January 16th, 2023 at 8:29 PM ^
don’t confuse the loonies with actual information. i’m sure the poster was just some sort of MGoMole for manuel. it’s the only possible explanation.
January 16th, 2023 at 9:34 PM ^
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night.
January 17th, 2023 at 5:07 AM ^
Thank you, Simone.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:35 PM ^
Essentially it was this:
Warde having the ball sack of a newborn to defend his team against the enemy when everything was clearly against them.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:35 PM ^
Some fans think Warde should have publicly gone scorched earth after the officiating in the OSU game.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:41 PM ^
Those very same people also think at the very least he could’ve publicly supported his HC who did go on record to call out the irregularities we and the whole world witnessed. Instead he basically admonished Jim for his outburst and left him on a PR island.
I love how the Warde-ites think saying anything publicly about anything is going “scorched earth” because Michigan is suppose to never object to anything done to it. It’s unseemly.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:48 PM ^
Has the AD done or said anything about the Fiesta Bowl crew's hatchet job?
January 17th, 2023 at 3:26 PM ^
There were questionable calls going both ways in the Fiesta Bowl. I recall M being the beneficiary of what may be the softest of soft roughing the passer penalties.
January 16th, 2023 at 7:39 PM ^
...I see your unseemly and raise you an uncouth.
January 16th, 2023 at 8:20 PM ^
For the record I’m not a Wardite, I just answered a question.
January 16th, 2023 at 8:30 PM ^
if you’re not (to steal a phrase) “going scorched earth,” you’re a “wardite.”
January 16th, 2023 at 10:59 PM ^
The correct term is a Wardle.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:01 AM ^
there's no place for fat-shaming.... that uncalled for
January 17th, 2023 at 4:39 PM ^
Huh? It's just a play on Warde and Wordle.
January 17th, 2023 at 7:09 AM ^
The idea that this would all be handled behind the scenes was in fact Warde's main failure. Only public outrage would have led to changes in B1G officiating. Warde failed to create that opportunity. Exactly the same thing happened in Tunnelgate: Warde handled everything "behind the scenes," and Warren let MSU off the hook.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:01 AM ^
Agreed. Appealing to public opinion every time isn't the answer- you get ignored. But every once in a while, it's completely appropriate to air things in public, if for no other reason than to publicly have your people's backs.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
When has public outrage ever changed Big Ten officiating? All Warde could do by publicly whining is make the Big Ten another $10k richer.
January 16th, 2023 at 6:36 PM ^
I believe it is in reference to him not doing more about the officials in that game specifically the fact a self proclaimed OSU fan was on the crew for that game.
January 16th, 2023 at 7:20 PM ^
Michigan was fined $10k for Harbaugh's reaction to calls and dealings with officials during that game. Ever since, Harbaugh has tempered or muted his feelings during games to the point where it appears he was lectured by the school about disrespecting it by his on-field emotions.
I have no direct knowledge of this, just speculative from my standpoint. But Harbaugh clearly altered his sideline demeanor after that game.
January 16th, 2023 at 7:22 PM ^
Watch and be sick
2016 osu everyone!
January 16th, 2023 at 8:10 PM ^
I'm curious how many missed calls you could put on tape for the average game (as compared to this one) but when you put them all next to each other it definitely seems pretty egregious.
January 16th, 2023 at 9:55 PM ^
This one stands out. People are mad about the Michigan-TCU game and it was not well officiated but there were only a handful of calls. The biggest one obviously being the touchdown. Yes it stunk, but it wasn’t completely one-sided the entire time. That OSU game was so one-sided I would say it’s easily one of the worst officiated games of all time.
There were more bad calls in the 2016 OSU game than probably all of Michigan’s season combined in 2021 and 2022. It was that bad.
January 16th, 2023 at 9:25 PM ^
I’ll always remember the lack of pass interference calls that were made and the fact that several of them were very high leverage plays in the game. And then of course the one that did get called on Delano Hill when the ball was completely uncatchable.
That video also points out some things that I didn’t remember - the offside that should have been a false start on them and some egregious holds that were missed.
January 16th, 2023 at 11:12 PM ^
I got so angry watching that… What a screw job.
For those of you calling us whiners or questioning this, I assure you, it was THAT BAD.
ZERO LIVE ACTION PENALTIES ON OSU IN THAT GAME.
