Strange Request: OSU@UM 2013
This may seem like a strange request, but I am wondering if anyone has a high quality video of this full game. I was at the game, and it was epic, but it also stung so I never watched it to see if I could find myself and my group in the stands of the student section. Now that the sting has officially faded, I would like to do that.

I was at that game and we had two Notre Dame fans standing behind us. I kept turning around to ask them “why are you here”
Then they left in the 3rd qtr. I still feel bad about that.

Did you tell them "To Hell With Notre Dame!"
I would feel good about that...

Anytime I come across a Notre Dame fan, I tastefully inform them that Michigan literally birthed their football program.

And Michigan clearly wasn’t gentle with the forceps.

Kinda wish abortion would have been legal back then...

I get the downvotes, but I still thought it was pretty funny.
Sometimes its okay to have a sense of humor.

Is this true ? Please elaborate.

Michigan's team traveled to South Bend to teach them the rulebook and some rudimentary plays, then played a game against them.

Doesn't surprise me. Two Mississippi State fans sat behind me for Michigan vs ND 2019. I also saw a couple Georgia fans at the Big House for one of the games this season. I think the Big House is an iconic venue and it draws some fans from everywhere that just want to experience it.
Whether you like Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma ect., what fan of college football in general wouldn't want to experience Michigan vs Ohio State at the Big House?
December 16th, 2022 at 8:49 AM ^
that actually reminds me of anytime I'm somewhere neutral (Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Jacksonville) wearing Michigan gear and some jackass buckeye fan has to go out of their way to make an ignorant comment.
Don't be like ignorant buckeye fans, be better.

Agree! If you're a football fan but had the historical misfortune of rooting for a second rate team (Toledo, Vanderbilt, Rutger), why wouldn't you want to attend a game in the Big House? I went to see a baseball game at Fenway, and I only kind of like baseball!

apparently the OSU players ....
45-23

100%
But why wear a ntMSU jersey to a Michigan/ND game?
When I went to UTL1, there were a bunch of Staee jerseys in my row. Da fuq?

Wrong Game Guy is always at every game.
Every college football fan should try to see The Game at least once.

There are pretty quality videos of this full game all over You Tube.
December 15th, 2022 at 10:32 PM ^
Seconded. If nothing else, Gardner's almost-game-winning drive is worth a watch.

DG was a warrior. Would have loved to see him on a team like this. The guy is humble when he raves about JJ and how he doesn't have the skill JJ has.
December 16th, 2022 at 10:55 AM ^
If anyone had bothered to coach Devin Gardner when he was here... I don't think "lack of skill" was Gardner's problem...
[This also applies to Hoke Era Denard and, alas, poor Shane Morris. Quarterbacks from 2011-2014 got by on what they could do, and teach, themselves.]

I have DG signed cleats from that game. *cool story bro*

I too was in the student section as a freshman. Row 5. We were chatting about potentially rushing the field during the timeout before the 2 pt attempt. Little did we know we’d come out in the exact same formation after the timeout.
December 16th, 2022 at 10:14 AM ^
I thought for sure we were going to motion Dileo when we lined up in that formation, or shift the entire formation to mess with osu's defense since they had no timeouts left and cause chaos and their defense to panic. Nope, same formation, ball snaps and we all already knew they were prepared for that play.. I knew it was that quick slant pass to Dileo..
December 16th, 2022 at 12:04 PM ^
Yeah watched the video after a long time ... more like a curl. It was a small window but available. Play had to be quick / dart throw for that option to work due to the forward receiver creating the space for Dileo to sit down in before getting closed out.

Do you enjoy punching yourself in the balls?
December 16th, 2022 at 7:40 AM ^
1. The home team is supposed to play for overtime
2. The 2 pt play was sooo bad, after everything DG had done and the fear of him set in the Ohio State defense, what was Hoke thinking
The team did what they needed to against a superior rival opponent, and the coaches just pissed it away.
But aside from that, enjoy the rewatch!
December 16th, 2022 at 8:15 AM ^
I was there too and I completely agree that the coaches screwed up. One thing I appreciate about this year’s Michigan team is that they have well prepared plays, ready to go in short yardage situations.
Michigan clearly spent time in games this year working on goal line and short yardage plays. It was said to be an emphasis in camp too as everyone wondered if Blake was too small.
contrast the difference between Michigan facing, “…and 3” and Ohio State. Both loaded, (mostly) well-coached teams, diverging in this one area of the game and it changed everything.
December 16th, 2022 at 8:44 AM ^
Gardner was clearly hurting and spent (he had a hairline fracture in his foot, which I don’t think they knew yet, but he was clearly struggling). No way they would have won in OT. Going for 2 was the right move.
What was not the right move was coming out in exactly the same formation and running an obvious play right after OSU called timeout. I am surprised Gardner hasn’t popped Borges one on ETKA for that call.
December 16th, 2022 at 10:23 AM ^
Exactly, no way could Gardner play beyond in OT, dude balled out on a fractured foot. I can only imagine the pain.
2pt was the right call. And 1000% lining up in the same formation after the time out, when osu knew the formation/player package/ play call was a massive mistake. Most coaches thought they could out execute with a great call even against a planned defense against it. Massive mistake!
I was convinced when we lined up after the TO that they were going to shift the formation or motion Dileo and they never did.. ugh

Gosh that game. I went in thinking it would be a bloodbath. This was right after we couldn't move the ball for the entire second half vs Iowa, and we had the Penn St and MSU offensive debacles earlier in the year.
From the jump the team and offense looked like they hadn't since Week 2 vs ND. Gardner was a man possessed that game. It still irritates the heck out of me what they called for that 2 pt conversion. In the bowl game in garbage time vs K-State they ran a jet sweep pass with Gallon that worked perfectly. That should have been what was called vs OSU.
One thing you can't say about Hoke is that he didn't get his teams up for OSU. In his 4 seasons, all 4 games were competitive and in 2012-2014 we were at such a talent deficiency. I wonder though how much good cache a win in that game would have brought to Hoke. Perhaps the team comes off that game and wins the bowl game to finish 9-4, and they have say a 8-4/7-5 season in 2014. Maybe we don't get Jim. All works out in the end I guess.
December 16th, 2022 at 8:08 AM ^
Jim Harbaugh was going to be our coach regardless. It's written in Revelation.
December 16th, 2022 at 8:17 AM ^
That KSU game was infuriating for several reasons. One of which was that 2 pt play was exactly what they needed against OSU and the coaches clearly weren’t prepared.
December 16th, 2022 at 8:56 AM ^
Watching that game, I was 100% sure they were going to have Lewan declare eligible and line up as a TE, fake a run and have him release & slip out for a wide open 2pt conversion reception.... but it wasn't so.....
At that time no one knew about him and gibbons and he was very popular and talked about as an expected 1st round pick.....
December 16th, 2022 at 2:38 PM ^
I'll watch a couple clips of that game every now and again, but I can't ever bring myself to watch a second past Funchess' TD catch. Can't do it.
I'll never be upset with Hoke and Borges for going for it at the end. It was the right call. Your defense was getting ripped to shreds on the ground and short of Hyde or Miller committing a turnover you weren't going to keep up with them in OT. But your offense was on fire that day and Gardner played like a man possessed. You convert that two point try, OSU has 30 seconds left, Hyde is essentially removed from the equation because no one is going to run the ball with that little of time left, and Miller I think was something like 6/15 that day with an interception. Take your chances making him beat you in the air.
But what I'll never forgive them for is refusing to change up the playcall. Ran out there in the same formation, same freaking play. OSU knew what was coming and blew it all up. Never stood a chance. Microcosm of Brady Hoke's tenure. Predictability, and letting being predictable beat you.
Hoke and Borges failed Gardner that day. They failed the whole team. Robbed Michigan of a win over Meyer that was right there for the taking. Gardner deserved to be carried off the field that day, Rudy style. Had they won, it would've been the greatest individual performance in Michigan football history, and one of the greatest individual performances in college football, ever. Did all of that on a broken foot and a sieve for an OL. Its the kind of story that eventually becomes a college football folk tale.
But unfortunately, no one outside of Michigan fandom will ever know that a performance like that happened, because they lost.
