D-Line and O-Line Games Played through 13 games
After following the freshmen through the season, I wondered what it would look like to check on all the players participation numbers. The full list was a bit overwhelming so I sorted them into a few position groups.
For today, take a look at the trenches. (TE excluded here for symmetry even though they are definitely a huge part of the offensive line play.)
I highlighted their years in school to see what popped up and you can see pretty quickly how much more possible it is to see the field early on the DL with the rotation and specialization but how OL have to be developed over time.
Go Blue!

Eyabi Okie only playing in 8 games doesn’t feel correct

When he changed his name, his previous data disappeared from mgoblue.com. I am pretty sure he's played in all 13 games but just went with the official Michigan participation numbers.

That makes sense. It's rare that a player changes his name, and even rarer that it happens mid-season, so that could explain an oversight with the AD stats...

Oh ok that would make sense

So, this is one of the reasons that the D dominates in the second half. Eight different DLs played in all 13 games and another 4 played double digits. And, the OL has an 8-man rotation to work with.

I’m surprised Welschof has played in every game. He must play special teams?

Thanks to the OP for putting this together. I did wonder how these numbers are impacted by special teams or garbage time snaps. I'm not expecting anyone to do this (I am certainly not), but next level is how many snaps were played in meaningful game situations.

That is who Okie changed his name to. 😎

It does show how much the young guys have progressed this year. I was re-watching the Georiga game last night (I know, I know) and was surprised how often Juice was in early on and often. It has been nice seeing younger guys with more upside crack the lineup this year like Grant, Graham, McGregor, and Moore. Nothing against Juice but he was always a tweener. Not necessarily long and athletic enough for an every down EDGE but not beefy enough to be an every down DT.

The DL quartet of Graham, Grant, Benny, and Rooks should be able to replace Mazi. I hope we get Jenkins back next year.

The DL depth reminds me of the great Miami and FSU teams of the 80s and 90s that seemed to have two starting foursomes that they could rotate in. Hope Mike is back for the playoffs - he must be ready to roll and get some sacks on Duggan.

Will be interesting to see how things play out amongst those sophomores and freshman on the OL next season.

Lot of depth there, but we could lose 4-5 this year. Hope the 23 class can close on a couple more recruits.

The 2022 DL class may go down as a historic one.
Graham, Grant, and Moore are clearly all going to be impact players during their 3 or 4 years at Michigan.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see a grad transfer on the OL if Zinter and Keegan leave
Either way, Michigan should be stacked on the DL and OL again next year.

I would say that even with early departures we should be solid on the 2-deep on both lines next year.
Defense: Harrell-Jenkins-Graham-Okie & McGregor-Benny-Grant-Moore.
Offense: Persi-El-Hadi-Crippen-Keegan-Barnhart & Bounds-Atteberry-Anderson-Jones

Might be overlooking Andrew Gentry.

I think the dl participation tracker might be a little misleading. Not for guys like Graham, grant, Moore and Benny, but for other guys like pollard and guy. Those two guys are ones I don’t remember seeing hardly at all on defensive plays, so they must have got their time in on special teams. I could be wrong though. Anyone know different?

True, but Pollard and Guy are a freshmen and sophomore so getting them on the field at the end of games or on special teams is still a good thing. Snap counts on O, D, and ST would be ideal but I don't want to pay for information. I'm too used to getting amazing information for free here on the blog. :)

Curious to see how Pollard turns out. No real good reason for him to burn his redshirt this year unless the coaches think he's done developing.

Next year we could be looking at Barnhart,Trente,ZZ,Gio,Anderson or Crippen. What about Cam Goode on DL does he have one more year eventhough he is grad transfer?
December 6th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
Counting a Covid year, Goode actually has 2 years of eligibility left after this one. He played in 2019, 2020 (Covid Waiver), and 2021 for UCF and 2022 for Michigan.
As for the OL, if I had to guess if only one guard leaves after this year, it would be Zinter before Keegan. Although I think there is a much greater chance we lose both than retain both.

Cam Goode took a redshirt at VaTech for the 2018 season.
December 6th, 2022 at 12:56 PM ^
1 more year for Goode, not 2. Next year is his 6th, if he decides to take it. And UM agrees to offer it.

Great info. With CV and redshirts - a question arises, who has remaining eligibility?
December 6th, 2022 at 10:21 AM ^
Our only Class of 2017 remaining players (players who absolutely are out of eligibility) are:
Honigford & Robbins
Our Class of 2018 remaining players are:
Ryan Hayes, Gemon Green, Taylor Upshaw, Julius Welschof, Michael Barrett, German Green, Ronnie Bell, and Jake Moody.

Excellent content!
Those numbers for freshmen games played just show how difficult it is to transition to the next level as an OL.

Man. Looking at the OL list, we really have become a better version of Wisconsin. We are loaded with great players and developing players.
