I'd rather be world-class
November 29th, 2022 at 6:41 PM ^
Stay humble. Be humbling.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:42 PM ^
I wondered about that...and I doubt it. He seems to dial in on particular nicknames for players/teams and stick with them. But it's time for a new one for us...how about Big 10 champion Michigan Wolverines? Has a nice ring to it...
November 29th, 2022 at 7:08 PM ^
Speaking of rings... hoping they get some good ones this year!
November 29th, 2022 at 7:23 PM ^
He tells the story that “World Famous” is because Jesse Owens made OSU world famous while embarrassing Hitler and his “Aryan race” plans.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:42 PM ^
+1... Wish it could be more.
Look, Johnson annoys me like a lot of folks, but once you know the story about that label he's put on OSU, I've learned to tolerate it a lot more.
I hope I never see a post about this topic again on this blog.

Some fans are way too touchy about announcers. Do you expect him to say nothing good about Ohio State? I’m pretty sure he’s actually a Michigan fan or at least was one growing up so I get the hate for him being over the top some time but to imply he has any bias toward OSU is a bit strange.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:53 PM ^
Jesse Owens' rival -- and good friend -- in Big Ten track meets was Sam Stoller of Michigan. They generally finished 1-2. (Stoller used to joke that he saw more of Owens' back than anyone on earth.) Stoller was also on the US Olympics team that year.
In what was widely regarded as an outrageous decision, he and fellow Jewish sprinter Marty Glickman were yanked from the 4x100 relay team the morning of the finals by Avery Brundage, head of the US Olympic Committee. Stoller, Glickman and many others believed it was because Brundage didn't want to embarrass Hitler with two Jewish gold medalists. If it weren't for Brundage, I suppose Michigan would also be world famous.
November 29th, 2022 at 10:12 PM ^
I'd have liked to seen this. Shame on Brundage.
November 30th, 2022 at 3:18 AM ^
Jesse Owens is world famous. Not Ohio State. And Jesse Owens did not go to Berlin in an OSU uniform, he went to Berlin in a USA uniform.
Nobody internationally knows what college Usain Bolt went to, or if he even went to college at all.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:45 PM ^
They had a segment on it during the game - if i recall he explained it that it's a tribute to Jesse Owens and his pioneering for black athletes as an Ohio State track star going into the olympics.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:49 PM ^
well, that is the only good thing i've ever heard coming out of the OSU athletic department
November 29th, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
Given his plaque in Ann Arbor we could call him, “THE Ohio St. track star”
November 29th, 2022 at 8:12 PM ^
The school insists on their ignorant, pretentious "the."
So it would be "The THE Ohio State track star."
November 29th, 2022 at 6:47 PM ^
no, he will not
November 29th, 2022 at 6:48 PM ^
Leaders and Best will be fine.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:50 PM ^
I know i have some OCD issues, but the board posts are getting out of control. I love the reason why, but hate the lack of order... my problem... too many board posts makes jake something something
November 29th, 2022 at 8:13 PM ^
You're right! The posts have gotten a bit crazy. It must be the explosion of feeling after the exhilaration of the win.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:50 PM ^
Let's start with B10 East Champs. Then, hopefully, he can refer to us as B10 Champs for a while.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:57 PM ^
Just like she said… you stopped short. It is all the way to your National Champion Meeechigan Wolverines!
November 29th, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
Lived overseas for 12 years and never saw any OSU gear or heard about it; strangely saw more MSU stuff/alums (including my promising young staff member who resigned to go to MSU business school, the ungrateful little shit)
November 29th, 2022 at 6:57 PM ^
You do know that he grew up in Detroit and is on record as being a Michigan fan, right?
November 29th, 2022 at 7:01 PM ^
No nobody seems to notice that even though he's done articles and interviews saying that. A lot of people seem to think he's an OSU homer, but I believe he just goes a bit to far one way to try and appear neutral.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:07 PM ^
He doesn't even do that. I swear, it's like people here don't understand the concept of "bias." That is, when we hear announcers praising Ohio State it seems unreasonable and unjustified, and when we hear them praising Michigan it just seems like "fact" -- and therefore unmemorable.
Gus Johnson is absolutely enthusiastic about Michigan, but he's doing his job, and trying to sell the game. If you expect him -- or any national TV announcer -- to rip on Ohio State during a game, you don't understand how broadcasting works.
(Sorry -- not meaning to rip on you. I just roll my eyes each time I hear people complain about how a given announcer favors the other team (or, in your case, suggest that Gus Johnson "goes a bit too far one way"). They don't (and he doesn't). We just hear their compliments for the other team more than we hear the ones about our own. That's the way "bias" works).
November 29th, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
His affinity for OSU I didn’t know.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:16 PM ^
I'm getting really tired of shitposts like the OP's.
November 30th, 2022 at 5:39 AM ^
His enthusiasm for OSU in football and MSU in basketball knows no bounds though, no matter what he claims. MSU basketball fans think he favors MSU as well which is telling because usually fans bitch that the announcer favors the other team. Brent Musberger got this all of the time. Both Mich and OSU fans used to claim that he favored the other team.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
IDC, the "world famous" tout sounds like a BBQ pork sandwich you see at some random diner. Usually alright but doesn't meet the hype
November 29th, 2022 at 7:11 PM ^
World’s finest cup of coffee.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:43 PM ^
I always thought it sounded like sarcasm.
BTW my wife is convinced he's a fan of whoever UM I'd playing.
November 29th, 2022 at 6:59 PM ^
Guy Johnson doesn’t show Michigan any love. Just win baby!
November 29th, 2022 at 7:15 PM ^
Hearing Gus talk without his show voice is wild.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:24 PM ^
I loved it, the video shows everything about where his fandom lies. It's why I can listen to him against other teams and realize he's just playing the crowd.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:14 PM ^
I have to admit I love Gus. He's got great energy and just knowing that deep down he bleeds blue makes everything work for me.
And, he gave us O Ja BO! (which will live forever in my memories)
And I kind of like "The Don" for D. Edwards.
Gus and Klatt are easily my favorite pair.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:02 PM ^
I mean, you can wear the block "M" in the most remote parts of the world and still hear "GO BLUE!", so I think we might already be, but Gus could also do so, I suppose.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:13 PM ^
Man people are butt hurt about Gus. It’s one thing if you don’t like his style but who cares if he hypes up OSU? He and Klatt love UM and Harbaugh on our games too. And he legit loves UM. Chilax everyone.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:24 PM ^
Let's win a National Championship and worry about what people call us after that.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:27 PM ^
No he won't. And it won't bother me even a little.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:37 PM ^
World Famous because of the large audience that watched our Maize and Blue beat down the buckeyes in their own stadium. That after the Fox and College Game Day panels picked OSU to win, except for Charles Woodson and Desman Howard.
Gus can what ever he wants but I'll bet the narrative will be much more respectful to Michigan in the Big-10 Championship Game.
Beat Purdue and REPEAT as Big-10 Champions! I would like the sound of- Michigan defends it's Big-10 title by knocking off Purdue in a convincing manner.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:42 PM ^
I hope not. It’s like a corny slogan for a subpar hamburger chain.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:48 PM ^
I find Gus Johnson's game call to be just dumb. I wish I could turn off the speech. He wants to be a hype man, but reminds me of a distracted multi-tasker, missing most of the action.
November 29th, 2022 at 8:07 PM ^
He is pathetic as a play by play man
November 29th, 2022 at 8:16 PM ^
Your opinion is noted. Duly.
Others enjoy him or tolerate him because we know his replacement likely sucks a shit load more.
November 30th, 2022 at 5:51 AM ^
I think a certain section of the board still expects Keith Jackson to be calling the action every Saturday.
is he still with us by the way?
November 30th, 2022 at 11:10 AM ^
I think a certain section of the board still expects Keith Jackson to be calling the action every Saturday
Some on this board would make shitposts about Keith Jackson too if they perceived he wasn't tossing their salad.
November 29th, 2022 at 8:07 PM ^
Something like: "Michigan, the B1G East champs, coming off their crushing victory over the world famous Ohio State Buckeyes..."
November 29th, 2022 at 8:15 PM ^
jeez, people, we don’t need a new post for every thought that crosses y’all’s minds.
