Well, Sun Devils are real things, and Herm didn't seem to know that their name refers to something that is not a pre-creation fallen angel. So it's probably for the best (I mean this affectionately. I wish so badly that I could be that innocently naive.)
September 18th, 2022 at 6:38 PM ^
I thought Herm was under investigation when they hired him? Were they that desperate for a coach? Is not Ed Orgeron available?
September 19th, 2022 at 9:33 AM ^
maybe they'll get ol' Urbs?
September 19th, 2022 at 10:51 PM ^
Blah blah blah.... Fuck ohio
September 18th, 2022 at 7:25 PM ^
I was unaware that the guy that developed the sun devil mascot (Sparky) had been a Disney animator and rumor is the facial features were designed to resemble Walt Disney.
September 18th, 2022 at 8:37 PM ^
This is a true story.
September 19th, 2022 at 9:42 AM ^
Wow, I can now never unsee that. Interesting story.
September 19th, 2022 at 10:02 AM ^
This is the quote and context, from an article in the Chicago Sun-Times:
"One of the best moments happened when a journalist introduced himself as a reporter for the Devils Digest.
"Before the reporter could ask his question, Edwards interrupted him.
“'Devils Digest? I’m Catholic now, I’m Christian, watch out for them Devils,” Edwards said. “I’m just saying. We’re good brother, we’re good. I ain’t takin it personal.'
"It’s not clear if Edwards made a really bad joke or forgot that Arizona State’s mascot is Sparky the Sun Devil."
September 18th, 2022 at 5:53 PM ^
That program is in a shambles. The A.D. (Edwards' former agent) should be next.
September 19th, 2022 at 6:36 PM ^
ASU alum and booster here- The entire fan base wants him gone but it likely won't happen. Crow, the president, is calling the shots and had several opportunities to fire Ray Anderson over the years and chose not to. The fan base is pissed. Several high dollar donors not cutting checks until RA is gone. Hopefully that moves the needle.
September 18th, 2022 at 5:55 PM ^
Well then, Herm Edwards to Nebraska and Scott Frost to ASU
September 18th, 2022 at 5:58 PM ^
This actually sounds like one of those outcomes that is equal parts insane and plausible and likely happens.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:22 PM ^
Herm Edwards is 68 years old. It is time for him to exit stage left.
There is no reason ASU cannot be a power program. The Phoenix metro area has excellent and growing talent base, and the SoCal talent pool is SoClose. This seems like a golden opportunity for a rising coach hire. And no, Scott Frost is not that.
September 18th, 2022 at 9:42 PM ^
I don't know... Our latest Presidents have been mid 70's +...so I don't think Herm's age had much to do with it. I thought ASU had been middling in the pac 12 during his tenor?
September 18th, 2022 at 10:55 PM ^
No politics but I wish they had both exited before their 70s as well.
September 19th, 2022 at 9:46 AM ^
They haven't exactly been models of mental and physical fitness. There should be an upper age limit, just like there is a lower age limit.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:35 PM ^
I heard on some ESPN show (Dan Patrick?) that Urban Meyer is very interested in the Sun Devils job, which makes sense since he’s Satan.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:47 PM ^
Dan Patrick? I thought he was not a fan of the mother ship, as he likes to mock ESPN. Dan Patrick predicts all kinds of stuff and most of them are not true
September 18th, 2022 at 6:51 PM ^
As long as his wife doesn't mind. I hear it has a good talent base with regards to the coeds.
September 18th, 2022 at 7:20 PM ^
Yes, this has to appeal to Urb much more than Nebraska in that regard. It's like a pRon farm club.
September 18th, 2022 at 9:09 PM ^
At this point you have to assume Shelly Meyer is equally as disgusting as Urban, and/or just sticking around for the money and optics reasons. Right?
September 19th, 2022 at 10:19 AM ^
If you believe the rumors she's into the same things as he is.
September 18th, 2022 at 8:58 PM ^
ASU makes more sense for Meyer than Nebraska.
September 18th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
I would like this very much. I like having big named douche bag coaches coaching...provides more entertainment for me in my favorite pass time
September 19th, 2022 at 8:44 AM ^
This makes a ton of sense. ASU is swarming with young women who'd like their anuses digitally probed on a barstool in the name of the Holy Spirit.
September 18th, 2022 at 7:57 PM ^
I mean surely this isn't the first "wife" swap in the history of ASU
September 18th, 2022 at 8:58 PM ^
Unbelievably underrated comment
September 18th, 2022 at 5:59 PM ^
Ray Anderson should be next.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:02 PM ^
Perhaps his squad should have played to win the game yesterday.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:34 PM ^
This is what I needed in my veins from this thread.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:02 PM ^
This was the least surprising outcome of ASU hiring him.
September 18th, 2022 at 7:39 PM ^
Well statistically speaking that is the probable outcome for 99% of college coaches.
September 19th, 2022 at 11:37 AM ^
I don't believe it's 99%. But it's an interesting question as to what % of HC positions are fired v. leaving of their own intent. My guess would be it's about 80% are fired.
September 18th, 2022 at 8:33 PM ^
I mean, he got them 7 or 8 wins every non-covid year, and 4-0 against Arizona. A (relatively harmless) scandal and staff exodus did him in eventually but they got 5 decent to good years out of him. He did a lot better than almost anyone predicted.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
They should hire Creighton. That was a well coached team last night. If he can win at Eastern, he can win at ASU with all their resources.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:24 PM ^
No.
-Eastern Alum
September 18th, 2022 at 6:28 PM ^
It remains odd to me that no one's taking a shot at him. Making Eastern a consistent 6 or 7 win team is probably harder than what Saban does.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
His overall record at Eastern is 38-58. That’s mostly because of his first couple of years there, but still, it’s hard to sell a record like that to a new fanbase, which probably won’t understand how hard it is to win at EMU.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
Scott is available!
September 18th, 2022 at 6:12 PM ^
This ain't your Grandpappys Hurons/Eagles. CC has that program on solid ground. Fear the gray turf!
September 18th, 2022 at 7:45 PM ^
Well, he didn't. He did not quit.
September 19th, 2022 at 8:58 AM ^
You play...to lose... the game!
And your job.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:18 PM ^
Was a weird hire to begin with.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:21 PM ^
Better watch out for them devils. He’s Catholic, so no offense taken.
September 18th, 2022 at 6:23 PM ^
The way the Auburn fanbase treated Harsin from day one was unfortunate but I am not sure I saw anything worse than Auburn’s offense against Penn State. He will be gone sooner rather than later. Maybe he ends up at ASU? Auburn should be playing Calzada at QB. He at least has a track record of throwing the ball to his own teammates (he was the QB for Texas AM when they beat Bama last year).
September 18th, 2022 at 6:25 PM ^
ASU left us some gems under Herm though: back to back beat downs of MSU.
September 19th, 2022 at 1:49 AM ^
That clock management at the end of the game in Tempe was pure poetry. Dantonio could do nothing but scowl harder as his hopes of winning in the desert slowly suffocated
Herm played to win
