Santa’s Comments on Athletics
Santa Ono says Michigan has "one of the best athletic directors anywhere. A pretty good football coach, too."
Um we got a pretty good basketball coach too Mr. President.
And this guy isn't half bad either.
On the other hand, the second guy may (or may not) be coaching hockey for the Michigan Schrödinger's Cats at the moment.
And...
To say nothing of...
and
OMG. I think it moved
Lmao
Seriously Mac??!!
that's pretty high praise.... considering he sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake.... he knows when you've been bad and good.....
We're going to be good, for goodness sakes!
Let the reign begin!
or let the rain begin
Throw those reins aside and let the $$$ bags fly.
All Hail Santa!
Just don't let him break up the Beatles again
Santa Oyes amirite?
Can he fire the money cannon at Dante Moore? Seriously though, he sounds like a great fit and I'm excited to see what he does for the athletic program.
That could be a nice Christmas gift in December. Make it happen Santa
He emphasizes: He will do everything he can to help coaches and programs so Michigan can compete at the highest level.
Translation:
Santa is the ultimate bag man! I think he deserves a hello post. Amirite?
Hopefully his first task is to go talk to admissions about the transfer portal
Slap an M on the hat and make a T-Shirt
Santa J Ono gets it. He could be the right man in the long run. He's off to a good start.
Now seriously, everyone. If he can get the front porch (athletics) looking good that will be nice. But he has inherited an amazingly complex house to manage and in the end his success there will be how his tenure will be judged. Good luck to him.
To be fair, the front porch did look very good this past year. We’re stressing out about a half-finished recruiting class in one sport.
I think it moved
If I were him, I would exclusively wear this t-shirt...
Too soon lol
"I loved a woman who wasn't clean"
His sister in law!
Seth dug up this:
From 3:30 last November 27. I think he was mostly focused on it because he was still super invested in his former employer's chances of making the CFP, but still. Clear sports fan if you look at the feed.
And while as I've said a bunch of times athletics isn't a big deal for his job, it's always better to have someone who is transparently enthusiastic about sports at a big time sports place than the opposite like a Bollinger or Schlissel.
Agree on that last point. I'm not sure why anyone thinks this will impact our NIL offerings at all. Nonetheless, better to see someone who understands athletics impact on the University than someone who is dismissive of it.
I just took a look at (and then followed) Santa's Twitter account.
He's my nominee for 2022 'Most Interesting Man in the World '.
For a university president, at a school that only plays Canadian college sports (which are like D-III) to make a tweet like that about a player at a totally unrelated school … yeah, that’s a legit sports fan.
Let's get this man his own NIL deal on top of his University salary!
Santa always has cookies at every meeting and on his desk.
Curious what people think is needed to help us compete at the highest level, and what the trade-off is.
1. NIL and possible politicking to have the state laws changed.
2. Support NIL and support Michigan helping students as much as is allowed to get deals done.
3. Make it easier for us to accept transfers. That would of course require a big change in how credits transfer to Michigan and would affect all students. Is this something the University wants?
There are so many special rules for student athletes cant we just have transfer credit rules for incoming scholarship athletes. I mean we are our own boss here why not? Will pearls be damaged in the wake, surely, but honestly lets get it done.
OSU players have to see the campus from the bus windows why cant we budge just a bit? People will freak out once the new rules are set then never speak of them again. Im all for it.
All of the above!
First, let's get involved in some of the "pay-for-play" activities. Doesn't need to be like OSU and TAMU etc., but let's do something more than nothing here
Second, ease up on those transfer requirements. I don't think we need to do much here...just enough to get folks in. College football is more of a business than academics these days. Instead of trying to fight it, lets find a middle ground.
This is basically the formula for us to be able to recruit closer to OSU/ALABAMA/GEORGIA.
Just being supportive of athletics will be helpful and should change some priorities-
