Juwan Suspended for Rest of Regular Season
February 21st, 2022 at 6:41 PM ^
So that amounts to 5 games, which I think is what most of us expected.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:41 PM ^
Allowing him back for the Big Ten Tournament is, uh, potentially problematic. Should be interesting.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:42 PM ^
I expected a postseason ban as well given this isn't the first time, the lack of remorse at the presser. As Alex said, we as Michigan has to make sure a coach doesn't do this again, and I don't think 5 games or two weeks or whatever will convince anyone that.
Even Stephen A on ESPN First Take(EDIT: who I don't have a high opinion to begin with, but loves Juwan) says the suspension should be for the rest of the season including the postseason, that Juwan would be extremely lucky to not get fired.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:43 PM ^
I would have terminated him for cause. The prior episode with Maryland last year would have been his last chance in my book.
But, assuming he agrees to anger management, perhaps this is the appropriate road for Coach Howard. I wish him well.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:43 PM ^
Bigger news is Diabate. They need him.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:43 PM ^
I know no one will reply, but how do you think this affects calls going forward or other coaches actions toward the team. I imagine refs will be quicker with the T and opposing coaches will do whatever they can to trigger him. Who knows what will happen on the trail. I can see some players liking it and others not.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:44 PM ^
Has he came out and taken responsibility or just a statement from u of m that he's suspended
February 21st, 2022 at 6:44 PM ^
Gard and his assistants better get some penalty too, fuck that guy and his dirty playing players.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:46 PM ^
Totally off topic but did anyone notice Brad Davison trip Devante Jones after Jones skyed for a rebound? Jones fell and then I think there was a jump ball, but Jones fell because while Davison was down he intentionally moved his leg to trip Jones. Announcers didn't say a peep.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:46 PM ^
It might not be popular but I am going to say it. 5 games is a joke and if this had been the opposite or if it had been an Ohio State coach the same people defending this pathetic suspension would have been up in arms.
I don’t think he should have been fired but he should have been finished for the entire year including the postseason.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:47 PM ^
Seems reasonable to me.
What I found facinating over the past 24 hours was the absolute void of nuance this situation presented to our media overlords. Howard was either largely innocent of any real wrongdoing (after all the Wisconsin coach started it and their assistant escalted EVERYTHING) or Howard was basically guilty of crimes against humanity and should be fired, have his name stripped from all the things Michigan due to the embarrassment he caused and criminal charges probably should be brought. There was simply no in-between.
This is fair and reasonable IMO. Gard did start things by grabbing Howard but Howard massively and innapropriately overreacted to the situation. And the kerfuffle last year at Maryland didnt help his cause any.
Onward.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:47 PM ^
It’s fair and Juwan should be pleased that he’s still employed. This is clearly strike two for him.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:49 PM ^
Dunno. You start throwing punches at people, regardless of who said what beforehand, and it starts looking like Woody Hayes Not acceptable action. Not acceptable emotional management. Not acceptable leadership of young men..Just. Not. Acceptable. Not in 1978 and especially not now.
Five games seems very, very light.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:50 PM ^
I'm outraged. I am not sure if it's because I think Howard should be fired yesterday, or because coaches should fight more often and Howard is blameless. But it's one of those two...
February 21st, 2022 at 6:50 PM ^
Here to provide a friendly reminder... nobody cares what you think
February 21st, 2022 at 6:50 PM ^
I'm looking forward to facing Wisconsin in the B1G tournament.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:50 PM ^
Seems fair. Take the medicine and move on.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:51 PM ^
Equivalent to five Gonzaga DUIs, but nobody wants to talk about that
February 21st, 2022 at 6:51 PM ^
It's actually more than I thought UofM would do. Rightful so for what happened and how if Juwan acts like a normal professional the entire time this whole thing doesn't happen.
I'm sure they gave him a talking to as well stating this better not happen again. It's actually kind of lame that Juwan hasn't come out to apologize for any of what happened.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:52 PM ^
Just beat OSU in the finale please.

Seems about right. I figured it would be for the BTT as well, but the regular season ban is a lot. I am interested to see what happens to the Wisconsin and UM players and coaches other than Howard, as there were definitely actors beyond Howard who are going to be missing some time.
My guess is Warde will also extract some punishment but we'll see.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:53 PM ^
Michigan goes 5-0 under Martelli !
February 21st, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
I feel so sorry for all the holier-than-thou talking heads and MgoBloggers who think that is the worst crime they've ever seen. What will they all do now that Howard wasn't fired?
And as for Howard, he'll come back an even better coach and person than before.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
"Rest of Regular Season" sounds a lot worse than "Five Games". Five games is fair for what he did.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:56 PM ^
The problem with the length of this suspension is that it doesn’t allow enough time for Howard to address the underlying issue, which is clearly anger management. Michigan is playing with fire here.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:57 PM ^
Rick Pitino received 5 games for a prostitution scandal involving recruits and people are saying Howard should be fired for grasping the head of an opposing coach after he was grabbed by their head coach. C’mon people!
February 21st, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
Cool, now how much time does Gard and Wisconsin assistants get?
February 21st, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
Perfect chance for Martelli to show he is the one coaching the team.
/s
February 21st, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
The right thing to do and the right amount of games. Let’s hope he uses this chance to get his emotions in check and grow from this.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:59 PM ^
It's been 24 hours. I'm ready to be "on to Cincinnati".
This is so goddamn unfortunate but I'm so over it. I haven't gone to read about this anywhere else and luckily I don't have jackass friends badgering me about this. Juwan has some issues to sort out moving forward but I think he deserves to maintain his job. College sports ain't the rest of working America. Like it or not.
I just wanted to see our guys playing mid-March as a 10-seed opening weekend. After the abysmal forecast this team projected just 2 months ago, that would've been an amazing treat for March Madness purposes. This incident totally puts that possibility into question, especially if we have players suspended.
February 21st, 2022 at 6:59 PM ^
Some of y’all are too damn soft, don’t grab a man, also not knowing anything that was said. Fuck Wisconsin, I’m glad someone finally stood up to their Busch league shit
February 21st, 2022 at 7:01 PM ^
That Wisconsin coach really didn’t shove our guys like people are saying. Unsure why we are choosing to die on that hill.
February 21st, 2022 at 7:02 PM ^
After Gard has repeatedly ASSAULTED Howard in the past:
Can’t imagine why Gard thought he might be able to talk with Howard after the game. 🤔

Fuck Wisconsin and their coaches. The dirty play comes from the top. They'd better get the same, since both sides got heated, not just Howard. The idea that he would've and should've gotten fired for this is bullshit, and I'm glad the people stating this are getting negged all to hell.
February 21st, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
Fair suspension. Howard needs to get in a better place and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Won’t have too many defenders if there’s another incident
February 21st, 2022 at 7:04 PM ^
Season not over !!!
February 21st, 2022 at 7:04 PM ^
It should have been for the rest of the entire season, including any and all tournaments. Give him a chance to pause, reflect, and come back with a clear head and a renewed purpose next year.
February 21st, 2022 at 7:05 PM ^
Sounds about right. Figured he would get suspended for the postseason as well, but that’ll only be 2-3 games max between the BTT and NIT anyway.
What a ride this season has been. Feels somewhat like last years football team where everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.
February 21st, 2022 at 7:05 PM ^
Who gave out this punishment, the Big Ten or the Univ. of Michigan?
February 21st, 2022 at 7:08 PM ^
As is often the case, media-hyped, one-sided over-reaction dictates a 5 game suspension when a game suspension would suffice. I’m in Juwan’s corner on this. He was a great coach before the Wisconsin game aftermath and is still a great coach. When he is about to sign on the dotted line for his next contract extension, he should add in his costs for the 4-games he should have been paid for. Michigan needs Juwan a lot more than Juwan (and his sons) need Michigan.
February 21st, 2022 at 7:10 PM ^
The number of pearl-clutching posters here is hilarious.
Hey maizeayz, lol at citing Stephen A. Smith. Nobody with a healthy amount of self-dignity gives a flying hoot what that idiot thinks.
Hey whidbeywolverine, please explain IN VERY SPECIFIC DETAIL what you think was so bad about the "prior episode with Maryland" in the BTT? (Go ahead pearl-clutcher, dazzle us with your Zapruder-like breakdown of that incident.)
February 21st, 2022 at 7:10 PM ^
Ask can't reply to the specific post
"Even Stephen A on ESPN First Take says..."
Of all the people to use to make your point and you pick him?
February 21st, 2022 at 7:12 PM ^
40k fine for Juwan. Gard fined 10k. Neal gets one game, Williams and Diabate 1 game each. Nothing for Krabbenhoft or Chambliss, which is shameful.
February 21st, 2022 at 7:12 PM ^
Seems fine with me
Am I the only one that sees a spider on the asst. coach and Juwan is trying to kill it?
Are all the "he should be fired" fans done with Michigan basketball has long a Juwan is head coach?
Anyway, enjoy Master of Puppets
February 21st, 2022 at 7:12 PM ^
Seems fair. Sounds like most National opinions agree, other than in East Lansing and Columbus, of course. Onward! Let’s win the Big Ten Tournament when Juan returns!!!
