Was going to make a thread for this earlier, but busy at work.
I find it curious that the names on the Chinese team (at least in the NBC broadcast) have been Sinesized such that it is not apparent that a large portion of them are not actually Chinese. Example: starting goalie us Jeremt Smith, but broadcast shows as Shimisi Jerumei (also former Sparty Jake Chelios, or Kailiaosi Jieke, is playing for the Chinese team).
February 10th, 2022 at 8:55 AM ^
The bulk of the Chinese team is filled by members of the KHL club Kunlun Red Star who aren't actually Chinese citizens but have since been nationalized in order to meet Olympic eligibility. It's strange to hear the name Chelios playing for China.

Yes, that has been well publicized (at least in the hockey media) for a whilr. It just seems like their is an attempt to somewhat obscure the player origins in the broadcast itself.

The Olympic rule is that the athlete has to hold a valid passport from the country they represent. Hearing stories where this isn't exactly being followed. For example, Russian and US athletes giving up their citizenship for two weeks to play hockey? The US skier representing China was asked point blank "did you give up your US passport?" ...crickets what the response.
Happy that these athletes get to participate, but rules are rules in international competition.

off the shoulder of the goalie. Nice shot placement.

What channel ? I’m searching I assume the nbc app ?
edut: got it, nbc Olympic app

The game is on USA Network. First period ended a few minutes ago with the score still 1-0 USA.

Sounds like KJ has a couple of points for Canada, too. Excellent.

* (for the casual hockey fan) Michigan's Kent Johnson

didn't chris chelios' son defect to the CCP team? seems unwise. that'd be like defecting to play for the nazis.
February 10th, 2022 at 8:57 AM ^
He (and almost all of Team China) play for the only KHL team in that country... so all are on their olympic team even though no one wants to discuss if they are actually Chinese citizens.
For those unaware, it is *not* a problem for people to have dual (or more) citizenship and play in the Olympics. However they *must* hold citizenship in the country they represent. The Chinese government does not allow dual citizenship - anyone claiming Chinese citizenship must officially renounce all other claims, yet enforcement during the Olympics is.... lax, to say the least.

I really, really dislike this. It's one thing if you have some connection to the country. Former UM soccer player Justin Meram played for the Iraqi national team because his parents both directly immigrated from there and felt a strong connection to the country. That's totally understandable.
February 10th, 2022 at 9:09 AM ^
I don't know what you're talking about. All of these guys have strong connections to China. Just look at this quote from Chelios to Reuters:
"Since we've been over here for three years you start to feel a closeness to China. We've been eating Chinese food, living the Chinese culture so there's a certain closeness you feel with China and you start to feel you want to win for them,"
He's been eating Chinese food! If that's not a strong connection, I don't know what is.
February 10th, 2022 at 9:11 AM ^
LOL if that's all it takes, I may as well be half-Mexican and half-Chinese! Maybe some Italian too, to boot.

Throw in some French wine and stinky cheese and you've got an excuse to be arrogant!

Pretty arrogant though...
February 10th, 2022 at 9:07 AM ^
I highly doubt a bunch of guys renounced their citizenships to become Chinese citizens just to play in this olympics…so the obvious conclusion was China was basically able to hire a minor league hockey team to play for them instead. If China wasnt the host country, no way that wouldve been allowed
February 10th, 2022 at 10:53 AM ^
If they could clone the best foreign players with their stolen DNA, they totally would. This is the closest they can get.

"China's women's hockey team has faced similar criticism, with 12 out of 23 players being born outside of China. Zhou Jiaying, who more often goes by the name Kimberly Newell, is the team's Canadian-born goalie, and she found herself in the middle of an awkward situation recently. Although her Olympic profile lists English as her first language spoken, she was recently told that she was not allowed to speak English to members of the press. Instead, she had to speak Mandarin and allow a translator to convey her words to the media."

"I got three passports, a couple of visas
You don't even know my real name"
February 10th, 2022 at 8:57 AM ^
that'd be like defecting to play for the nazis.
"Hello hyperbole my old friend, I've come to talk with you again . . . "

let's see. crazy leader? check. incredible authoritarian regime controlling every bit of life? check. extreme racism in many respects? check. desire to rule the world or at least large parts of it? check. concentration camps for religious minority seen as undesirable? check. state-controlled business that are somewhat private but not really? check.
all they're missing is a swastika and some goose-stepping.
February 10th, 2022 at 9:14 AM ^
Lot of American check marks there too. The anti-China propaganda is real. You should try pretending to be as smart as you say you are.
February 10th, 2022 at 9:27 AM ^
I'm no fan of China's current regime, but I think you are onto something here. Russia checks all of those boxes as well, but for some reason, always seems to get a pass and is even celebrated in some circles.
February 10th, 2022 at 9:32 AM ^
where is/are the russian concentration camps? are they committing debt-slavery with other countries, pointed at successfully owning key parts (mines, harbors) of other countries?
February 10th, 2022 at 9:41 AM ^
Not sure if this is serious question. Who is their leader? Who controls the government and what happens to anyone who opposes their regime? Who owns most of the assets in their country, and how did they acquire and maintain control of them? What are they currently doing on the international stage, maybe with a bordering country that has key strategic assets?
Maybe they are more subtle in the way they run their autocracy, but it's no less abhorrent. And if you didn't notice, the two countries we are discussing here are ALLIES.
(Just to be even more transparent - China and Russia are the two countries I'm referring to here.)
February 10th, 2022 at 9:51 AM ^
i think i agree with you, but the difference is that russia isn't nearly the threat to literally the rest of the free world that china is and has been under the CCP these last few decades. china's population which is what, 10X that of russia, has far more economic ability to force compliance with the chinese take over of the world. i know a number of russians (and some from china, too) and as crooked as it is in russia, there is still a much greater level of individual freedom for the average russian.
February 10th, 2022 at 9:53 AM ^
I think we might actually be on the same side of this lol. Thanks for the discourse!
February 10th, 2022 at 9:28 AM ^
which one of those is wrong? and speaking of propaganda:
state-armed and funded aggressive propaganda department(s)? check!
February 10th, 2022 at 9:52 AM ^
If the Chinese government is so offended by 'propaganda' then they should try not doing genocide and see if that helps
February 10th, 2022 at 9:13 AM ^
I'd love to hear Peng Shuai's take is on this. Hello, Peng? You there? Anyone heard from Peng lately?
February 10th, 2022 at 12:18 PM ^
Yes, she did an interview where she said it was all a big misunderstanding. She didn't disappear, she was just very busy and not interested in the outside world's opinion. And there was a very nice man from the Chinese government sitting in on the interview to make sure everyone was comfortable and that nothing got taken amiss.

Jonathan Allen disagrees. He doesn't believe that Xi Jinping is anywhere close to Hitler's military genius...
(Allen think Hitler was a military genius and would love to have dinner with him. Seriously!??! A military genius??? LMAO!!! Hitler was the fucking moron that destroyed Germany's chances to actually win that war...)
February 10th, 2022 at 9:58 AM ^
I had no idea what you were talking about. Good god. I actually saw his response. He wanted to understand why he did what he did? Because he was a maniacal racist. Every time I think my faith in humanity can't sink any lower . . .
February 10th, 2022 at 10:16 AM ^
LOL. Don't military geniuses win wars?

A few USA/Olympics tidbits for the casual hockey fans (feel free to add more): besides Michigan's Brendan Brisson and Matty Beniers, USA Hockey's roster has other players with local connections, starting with goalie Strauss Mann, who was one of Michigan's team captains in 2020-21 and now plays professionally in Sweden. Former Wolverine Steven Kampfer (from Jackson MI) is listed on the roster as an alternate.
Long-time Red Wing Justin Abdelkader (now with the GR Griffins) has also seen ice time today, he hails from Muskegon.
Backup goalie Pat Nagle is from Bloomfield Hills and formerly played for Ferris State.
Andy Miele (Gross Pointe Woods) played collegiately for Miami (NTM).
February 10th, 2022 at 9:41 AM ^
I hated playing those Miami (ntm) teams circa 2007-2012. Especially that dude with the long black hair - blanking on his name. Should've won a natty against BU in 2009
February 10th, 2022 at 9:19 AM ^
In other USA Hockey news, we now lead China 2-0 midway thru the 2nd on a goal by Noah Cates (NPCB*)
*Not Phoebe Cates' Brother
