come again?
January 30th, 2022 at 11:39 PM ^
What confuses me is- all of a sudden every Lions fan seems to be so happy for Stafford. What happened to all the Couch GMs, with their pitchforks, that wanted Stafford out of town on the first bus, plane, or riding mower? Where are those thousands of geniuses at today?
January 30th, 2022 at 11:49 PM ^
??
I don’t remember that being the case. Our fan base had criticized him, and a lot of those critiques were justified (for instance, he made a terrible throw in this game that should’ve been picked in the 4th)…but most of the base understood that while has never Rodgers/Brady level great, has always been really good and never the problem.
I wanted him traded, but only b/c the org needed a reboot. I wanted to see him in a structured environment, and it worked out well. I’m very happy for him.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:19 AM ^
I for one argued against people who wanted to dump Stafford and draft Tua. I still might wind up proven wrong about that, but the idea that the entire fanbase all shared a negative opinion is an over-generalization.
As it is with any issue like this.
January 31st, 2022 at 6:43 AM ^
Those "geniuses" were few but really loud and at least one was still trashing him on the radio a few weeks back.
I for one, agree with the posts just above. I love it when loud mouths are proved wrong. What kind of person is so evil or ignorant as to put the outcome of a football game on the back of one person?
Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer were out of the league the year after winning a Super Bowl so I fail to understand why the concern falls so heavily on the QB.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:26 AM ^
You have a strange definition of the word “evil”.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:28 AM ^
Both those guys were journeymen at best, but they were in the league for another half dozen years after they won the Super Bowl. Johnson in particular started for Tampa the year after before losing his job to Brian Griese, and started for the Vikings for about a season and a half. Dilfer was mostly a backup in Seattle, but wound up playing extensively on bad Cleveland and San Francisco teams.

I live about 2 miles north of Detroit city limits and half the people I know or have talked to in recent years, blamed Stafford. Their memories might be hazy on Stafford, but mine is clear. I remember a shit ton of fans blaming Stafford in public, on the radio, and all over social media.
There were easily thousands of fans trashing him, probably tens of thousands!
January 30th, 2022 at 9:41 PM ^
Imagine if Stanford didn’t have to piss his career away in Detroit. What he could have done. Goes to show how dysfunctional the Lions organization is at football.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:12 PM ^
I don't get this narrative. Guy is 9th ALL TIME in career earnings. Average salary is $27 MILLION. You sign me up to piss away a career at that rate, I would do foul, foul things.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:46 PM ^
But that isn't the point. Dude would have gotten paid to play anywhere. And anywhere is better than Detroit. Ok maybe Cleveland is close.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:47 PM ^
Do you really not get it? That players who play want to play for a winning team?
January 30th, 2022 at 10:50 PM ^
January 30th, 2022 at 11:17 PM ^
Imagine if Quinn and Patricia weren't hired
January 30th, 2022 at 9:42 PM ^
Lol what?
January 30th, 2022 at 9:42 PM ^
No offense, but. . . not feelin' that one. Just a bit too far afield. One man's epinion.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
Was so pumped when Stafford got to take that final knee! Congrats to him!
January 30th, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
It is times like these that I wish the NFL had relegation like soccer. The Lions are a hot horse piss organization and should be playing alongside the equivalent of non-league teams that consist of full time dentists and clown college teachers.
Congrats Matt for getting out of Detroit to play for an actual NFL team and making it to the big time.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:44 PM ^
Good for Stafford that he got to escape the hell hole, which is the Detroit Lions!
January 30th, 2022 at 9:44 PM ^
One of our fearless users actually called Stafford “soft“ tonight during the game. Stafford took more tough hits with the Lions and even to get through the season than just about any quarterback you’ll ever know. The guy is a stud and a great guy. I will definitely be rooting for the Rams in two weeks.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:47 PM ^
That’s absurd. Stafford played hurt as much as any QB I can remember.
His teammates would laugh at the insinuation Stafford is soft.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:48 PM ^
Talk to our Mgofriend bfeever. He’s the one with the intelligent statement about that.
January 30th, 2022 at 11:43 PM ^
Of course the king of cringe doesn't disappoint with yet another juvenile take.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:47 PM ^
i had never seen that before. thank you for posting. stafford is not soft, no way, now how, shame on anyone who would say that.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:43 PM ^
Here's what one of Stafford's former teammates has to say about him:
"Let's go! My guy going to the Super Bowl first year out of Detroit! You gotta respect that. Toughest QB in the League!"

I'll root against the Bengals, because fuck Ohio, and root for Stafford who stayed in Detroit about as long as possible as got paid well, but not because of the LA fans - they are the definition of front runners.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:56 AM ^
I've been as critical of Stafford as anyone but "soft" is the last word I would associate with him. Dude played his ass off here, just lacked consistency
January 30th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
Happy for Matthew Stafford, great postseason!
January 30th, 2022 at 9:45 PM ^
So happy for Stafford! He proved all the haters wrong although many won’t admit it.
I’m also feeling some disgust at the Ford family for wasting that talent.
Eminent Domain. They should be forced to sell the team for the greater good of the people.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:50 PM ^
No, just no.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:52 PM ^
Stafford is a monster & did a ton for Detroit in his time here. I will never understand how people are actively rooting against him, it's been a blast rooting him on these past couple weeks.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:15 PM ^
I haven't seen people rooting against Stafford maliciously, but his success (or non success) directly affects the Lions, so it's understandable. I was hoping he went out in the first round this year, won the Superbowl next year. Now I want him to win the Superbowl this year.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:44 PM ^
My Romanian wife’s family uses a saying, “may the neighbors sheep die too”. Basically, if I can’t have something nice, others shouldn’t.
I’m happy for him. But know why others are not.
January 30th, 2022 at 11:31 PM ^
That is such a selfish and silly saying. I hope it dies the same slow death that communism has in that country over the last 30 years. The roots of it are still ingrained in some of the older citizens but it's pretty clear that it's dying.
January 31st, 2022 at 7:01 PM ^
100% agree. Along with their crazy ideas of “curent”
I’ve lived in a few eastern block countries and have seen the damage that centrally planned economies lead to. Marx was an idiot.
January 31st, 2022 at 5:12 AM ^
our sheep just applied for a PPO (protection order) against the country of romania. sheep are very skittish.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:54 PM ^
So, Stafford wasn’t the problem? Go figure!
I wonder if we can have the Browns option? Have the franchise move but leave the name. We go a couple years without NFL and then new owners come in and we start all over. I would bite your arm off for that.
But no to muppets. Sorry. That’s just for Michigan IMHO.
January 30th, 2022 at 9:56 PM ^
Isn’t there a Lions ex-pat site or somewhere where you can get your muppets?
January 30th, 2022 at 10:02 PM ^
I agree - Good for Stafford, but I am not a Rams fan, nor a UGA fan. Feel like Muppets should be reserved for Wolverine-related successes, no?
January 30th, 2022 at 10:05 PM ^
No, no, no. Last I checked, this is a University of Michigan sports site, not a site to cheer Former Detroit NFL Players.
The Muppets are special. Let's keep it that way, not cheapen them by throwing them around all over the place.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:05 PM ^
We have muppets.
They are called the Fords. They have special guests each season, they are called shitty coaches.
We are relegated to being the old guys in the balcony making jokes about how horrid the show is.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:05 PM ^
I'm kind of late in my career. Can I get traded to another fan base and some poor schlub from, let's say the Chiefs, has to become a lions fan?
Maybe throw in a half eaten hot dog and a piss warm beer.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^
I don't think it's going to happen, Vlad, but we CAN make this a Stafford Super Bowl POSBANG.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:38 PM ^
That'll work.
But don't tell the bfeave.
January 30th, 2022 at 11:10 PM ^
Or a Cade Cunningham POSBANG.
First Detroit Piston rookie with multiple triple doubles as a rookie and only the 12th player in NBA history through 40 games.
January 30th, 2022 at 10:10 PM ^
LOL. Happy for Stafford but what percentage of users here are even Lions fans?
January 30th, 2022 at 10:19 PM ^
IF the Loins ever become a legitimate contender, I'd guess the majority here would be actual Detroit fans rooting for the Honolulu Blue and Silver and a lot of others would hop on the bandwagon.
Might be a good poll question for the MGoBoard in another thread.
