Hot seats don’t stay hot for very long in the SEC.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:06 PM ^
Uh oh, that's Mel Tucker's music
October 17th, 2021 at 1:38 PM ^
That would be a questionable move. Tucker's career record is 14-12, and I suspect MSU is not going to finish this season strongly.
(I would laugh at MSU getting poached though.)
October 17th, 2021 at 2:09 PM ^
You're absolutely correct, but this is a school that hired Ed Orgeron in the first place.
I'm sure they have a favorite in mind who is not Mel Tucker; if they can't get him or he manages to last into next season at Jacksonville, though, they could end up with somebody like Mel Tucker.
Frankly, Michigan State could end up with 10 wins, too. If they win against beatable Purdue and Maryland teams, one win out of Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State gets them to 10.
October 18th, 2021 at 5:22 AM ^
Tucker is high on their list according to Bruce Feldman. A lot of people at LSU know him personally from his time there as an assistant with Saban.
October 17th, 2021 at 2:14 PM ^
I don’t think MSU has beaten a “good” team yet this year, but the turn around there is remarkable. The roster he inherited was utterly dismal. With it they beat 2 ranked teams last year (I know, I know) and are 7-0.
He absolutely crushed the portal last year. I honestly don’t think his time in EL will be long.
October 17th, 2021 at 3:10 PM ^
He did very well in the transfer portal, but I'm not sure that's a sustainable strategy in the long run.
October 17th, 2021 at 3:43 PM ^
Agree. But I think the speed of their turnaround will definitely create allure for some big programs.
It’s weird because I’m so used to Dantonio and really hating him, I don’t mind Tucker at all right now.
Program turnover sucks as a fan, so maybe I’m overvaluing Tucker because I want him to leave so MSU fans are sad.
October 17th, 2021 at 7:35 PM ^
Tucker is 1-0 vs Michigan. You probably didn’t hate dantoni after year one either. He was an afterthought because we that nothing of msu at the time
October 19th, 2021 at 12:43 PM ^
But we certainly have been thinking about MSU over the past few years, and a lot of people seem to think that Mel Tucker is much more likeable than Dantonio.
October 18th, 2021 at 6:11 AM ^
The transfer portal doesn't need to be a long term strategy at a place like LSU. Much more fertile recruiting grounds there than MSU, and to an extent the school recruits itself.
October 17th, 2021 at 5:25 PM ^
They may not have beaten a "good" team yet, but it's questionable whether we have, either. Beating all the non-good teams means you're probably a clear step above that tier.
The portal strategy may be more durable now with the way transfer rules work. And give him LSU's strong recruiting base to build with... well, it looks like he can build a good roster. That's something.
October 17th, 2021 at 4:11 PM ^
Think it’s more likely urban lands there than usc and Dave aranda is probably higher on the list too
October 17th, 2021 at 7:57 PM ^
Zero chance Urban goes to USC, which long ago decided it doesn’t want another would-be scandal. Widely reported.
October 17th, 2021 at 5:25 PM ^
Chizik was fired two years after his NC too wasnt he?
October 17th, 2021 at 1:07 PM ^
Let me pencil in a candidate....
October 17th, 2021 at 1:08 PM ^
I remember many of the fans demanding a lifetime contract less than 24 months ago. What a fickle world!
October 17th, 2021 at 2:25 PM ^
Some might even say... Fickell?
October 17th, 2021 at 3:02 PM ^
I think he ends up at USC
October 17th, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
No way Fickell ends up at USC. I think Fickell stays at Cincinnati or goes to Kentucky, MSU, PSU, or Notre Dame if one of those jobs open up. Fickell is built for a Midwest job (never coached outside of the state of Ohio and been his recruiting territory) and not sure if he will translate well to West Coast.
Crazy stat: I think Fickell has lived all but one or two years of his life inside the state of Ohio. That doesn't scream USC to me.That sounds more like a Tressel or Dantonio type--someone who is going to coach most of their career in the Midwest area.
October 17th, 2021 at 8:50 PM ^
I agree, Fickell is a Midwest guy, but he already turned down MSU so I think you can scratch them off that list.
October 18th, 2021 at 1:21 AM ^
I tend to agree, but you never know. The MSU job looks better now than it did a couple years ago when Dantonio retired so late in the coaching carousel process. I also don't know what Cincinnati's roster will look like next year. I think he will still have the best team in the AAC, but it probably won't be a top-10 team so maybe he capitalizes on his success this year?
I personally think he will stay at Cincinnati until OSU, PSU, or ND open up. I wouldn't be surprised to see him take the LSU job if he were offered it, but I think LSU would most likely look at other candidates.
October 18th, 2021 at 9:06 AM ^
I personally think he will stay at Cincinnati until OSU, PSU, or ND open up.
Are any of those jobs going to open up anytime soon? It’s hard to imagine Fickell’s stock getting any higher than it is right now, so if a bigger, better job comes along, you almost have to take it don’t you?
October 18th, 2021 at 11:12 AM ^
No way he goes to usc? Isn't their current ad the same guy that hired him at Cincinnati?
Not saying it's going to happen but I think dismissing it as impossible is a little bold.
Cheers.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:10 PM ^
Tuck comin'?
October 17th, 2021 at 6:38 PM ^
No, just breathing hard
October 17th, 2021 at 1:12 PM ^
How longer until Urban is signed?
October 17th, 2021 at 1:18 PM ^
That was my first thought. Genuinely think it might happen.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:55 PM ^
Hmmmm, will Tebow coach QBs or TEs?
October 17th, 2021 at 6:01 PM ^
I think LSU might be the only job that Urban could leave for this offseason. I don't see it happening with all the Urban drama this year, but I wouldn't be surprised by it.
October 17th, 2021 at 6:01 PM ^
He’s going to USC
October 17th, 2021 at 6:51 PM ^
The timing might be off a bit. I doubt Jacksonville will can Urban this year but in another year or two, Urban will get canned and will be looking for a college landing place. If Urban does get canned I think he will take the LSU gig, then follow Saban's path.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:12 PM ^
Wow. Beat Chizik's record.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:13 PM ^
But he still has like a $17 million buyout. I would hope that's something they're negotiating as well.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:13 PM ^
What about ol Matt Campbell
October 17th, 2021 at 3:24 PM ^
You mean rush three Matt Campbell?
October 17th, 2021 at 1:13 PM ^
Urban Meyer?
October 17th, 2021 at 1:21 PM ^
Uncle urbs just won his first nfl game!
from Bruce Feldman the LSU boosters are very high on Mel tucker
October 17th, 2021 at 1:25 PM ^
Interesting.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:40 PM ^
Dammit - I SO wanted Meyer to get booted after never winning an NFL game.
October 17th, 2021 at 3:33 PM ^
The last coach LSU got from MSU worked out pretty well (Saban)…
October 17th, 2021 at 7:35 PM ^
History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes.
Saban was the only other MSU coach to win his first meeting with Michigan (and the only coach from either school to do so since Bennie in 1948). So there'd be a certain symmetry if he bolted for LSU like Nick.
October 17th, 2021 at 5:07 PM ^
It Cayman London.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:23 PM ^
He just won his first NFL game, if they can win a couple more he'll win back the locker room and be fine I bet.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:30 PM ^
He lost the locker room? Doesn't look like it.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:38 PM ^
They are playing for their jobs, not his.
October 17th, 2021 at 2:25 PM ^
Did you watch the game today? His team looked awful. Just ever so slightly less awful than the 1-5 Dolphins.
October 17th, 2021 at 1:20 PM ^
Maybe he will be at USC
