Michigan #7 in Coaches Poll
October 10th, 2021 at 1:41 PM ^
But always #1 in our hearts! Go Blue!
October 10th, 2021 at 2:12 PM ^
…and #8 in the AP Poll, just behind Penn State: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll
October 10th, 2021 at 1:42 PM ^
Nice. Likey. I expected Bama to be 5 and OSU just above us.
October 10th, 2021 at 1:43 PM ^
#7 Coaches will equal #8 in the AP. Book it.
I predicted last night UM would pass PSU, but not pass Bama in the AP.
#GoBlue
October 10th, 2021 at 1:47 PM ^
Didn’t pass Bama in coaches poll either, and shouldn’t have.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:53 PM ^
True...in a few weeks we will know what our team is really about. The schedule has been absolutely perfect for our team to learn the new defensive schemes and for younger players to learn how to deal with hostile environments which they will most certainly face at PSU and MSU.
Win, draw or lose, this team seems different in that they have embraced the suck that playing away games at stadiums with passionate fan bases generate.
Fingers crossed!
October 10th, 2021 at 2:25 PM ^
Pretty well prognosticated (though we didn’t pass PSU), but we’re a lot closer to #7 (and even #6) than I was expecting.
October 10th, 2021 at 1:44 PM ^
5 Big Ten teams in the Top 10 with four of them from the Big Ten East! I guess we'll find out who's real and who's not in the coming weeks but that's impressive.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:07 PM ^
If those 5 teams beat up on each other it wouldnt make any of them less real. One of them has to win the games and be ranked above the others. You "should" lose to a team ranked above you, it doesnt mean you should drop ranking though.
10 loses to 9 and drops 3 spots, why? All that game proved was that 9 was better than 10, which, duh. It doesnt mean 10 is suddenly a 13 because they lost the game they SHOULD HAVE LOST.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:11 PM ^
Because the polls are a composite of many voters’ opinions. Maybe some voters had 10 ahead of 9 before the game. But after 10 loses, they drop on the ballots of those that had them 7, 8, or 9 beforehand. The net effect is that #10 drops in the polls.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:32 PM ^
All I'm saying is the four East teams in the poll have yet to have one game against one another so we'll see what happens when they play each other. "Real" was just a figure of speech. One team could dominate the other 3 or they could all beat up on one another. If I had to bet today it would be the first with OSU beating all the other teams decisively but you never know. Alabama did lose yesterday.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:25 PM ^
i’m not sold. Big Ten has 1 win against the current top #25 and that against itself(Iowa over PSU).
October 10th, 2021 at 1:46 PM ^
Three 2 loss SEC teams in the top 20. Kentucky, who has beaten nobody, at #11. Joke
October 10th, 2021 at 1:49 PM ^
They keep the SEC teams up there for quality wins for their top teams. It helps solidify 2 teams in the CFP for them.
October 10th, 2021 at 1:54 PM ^
They beat #10 Florida a couple weeks ago. Kentucky board probably asking who has Michigan beat?
October 10th, 2021 at 2:12 PM ^
A better question for them would be who has beat Michigan
October 10th, 2021 at 2:16 PM ^
Who has beaten Kentucky? We can do this all day lol
I was just adding some objectivity to the post.
October 10th, 2021 at 1:49 PM ^
Really does not matter. Whoever wins the Big 10 -- even with a loss -- is going to get in. I don't care all that much about the playoff. We just need to keep winning.
October 10th, 2021 at 1:50 PM ^
Iowa comically overrated. And if Wisconsin doesn't beat them in 3 weeks they'll have to really Ferentz one to a bad team down the stretch to stay out of the B10 championship.
October 10th, 2021 at 1:56 PM ^
How so? If they are they’ll lose later in the year anyways.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:02 PM ^
Did you watch that game? If PSU doesn't lose their quarterback they beat Iowa convincingly. And Iowa's SP+ offense is ranked in the hundreds. That isn't the second best team in the land.
But miss OSU, Michigan, Michigan State on your schedule and the Nittany Lions at home...feels like a recipe for an undefeated Iowa to get stomped in the B10 championship game.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:09 PM ^
They still beat three ranked teams so far this year. Assuming stuff that didn't happen is still assuming, maybe they do or don't win if PSU had it's starting QB.
If Michigan is ranked 7 with zero ranked wins Iowa should at least be ranked before them with 3 ranked wins, including 2 in the top 10.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:23 PM ^
Man, you must love being the straw man, but you really suck at reasonable and cohesive arguments. Remind me of my ex-wife LOL.
If they're not good they'll lose to Wisconsin or Nebraska that are both under .500? And when did I say they should be ranked worse than Michigan?
October 10th, 2021 at 2:31 PM ^
LOL good one!
So where should Iowa be ranked? The correct answer is between 2 and 5.
October 10th, 2021 at 3:58 PM ^
Man, you must love being the straw man
You keep using that phrase. I do not think it means what you think it means
October 10th, 2021 at 2:32 PM ^
Who are these three ranked teams Iowa has beaten?
October 10th, 2021 at 2:35 PM ^
#17 IU
#9 ISU
#4 PSU
October 10th, 2021 at 3:25 PM ^
Except 2 of those teams aren’t ranked and have 5 losses between them, but it was a good try and another textbook example of sea lioning. You do you, man
October 10th, 2021 at 3:36 PM ^
That's not how it works though, those rankings were indeed factual when each team played earlier in the season.
If later in the season Washington becomes ranked again, that doesn't mean Michigan beat a ranked Washington as they weren't ranked when they played.
October 10th, 2021 at 3:48 PM ^
Except that is exactly how it works. As we get more information we gain a better understanding of things. You’re acting like those wins mean more because they were based on assumptions that have since proven to be completely wrong. Yet you cling to them to sea lion and be obnoxious. It’s tired, and honestly, a little bit sad. It’s like you take pride in being contrarian just for the sake of it. Good luck with that. Your life must be lots of fun.
October 10th, 2021 at 9:29 PM ^
At the time Iowa beat Iowa state, Wisconsin was ranked 18th. I assume we get to claim that our Wisconsin win was over a ranked opponent, yes? Or is it ridiculous to take wins against against 2-3 Indiana and 3-2 Iowa State and prop them up as wins over ranked opponents?
October 10th, 2021 at 6:02 PM ^
I’m not so sure about that. Iowa was doing what Iowa does which is hanging around with a chance to win. The game was swinging in Iowa’s favor, Clifford going out just sped up the process.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:01 PM ^
The B1G West division will be interesting to see how all that shakes out, let alone how our East division with 4 teams at 6 and 0. I can't speculate how all of this shakes out but it will be fun to watch.
Go Blue! Keep winning!
October 10th, 2021 at 2:02 PM ^
Penn state wins easily if Clifford stays up. Either way Iowa isn’t winning against OSU in the championship game.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:06 PM ^
Iowa's a solid team, but they've been a huge benefactor of the preseason rankings of their opponents—IU was ranked #17 and Iowa State was ranked #7. Neither team is going to finish anywhere close to that, but after just those two games Iowa vaulted all the way from its preseason AP ranking of #18 to #5.
Iowa's other opponents have been Kent St, Colo St, Maryland, and PSU. It seemed pretty clear that PSU was on its way to victory over the Hawkeyes until Clifford went out of the game.
I won't be at all surprised if Iowa loses at Wisconsin on 10/30 or at Nebraska at the end of the season.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:17 PM ^
100%. And even if they lose to Nebraska they'll still win the West as long as they win all their other games. And I don't see them making the CFP if they don't win the B10 Championship game.
That game in Madison is a huge game. But I was in Madison last week and that fanbase is soooo checked out right now I'm not sure there will be as much resistance as there should be.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
Who has more and better wins than Iowa, without any losses? Their good wins are Indiana, ISU and PSU. Part of the reason ISU and Indiana seem overrated is because Iowa stomped them.
Georgia - yes. They deserve to be #1. Clemson/Arkansas/Auburn > Iowa's wins
Michigan - no. Iowa's wins > Washington, Nebraska, Wisconsin. 2 on the road makes this close.
MSU - no. I'd take Iowa's wins over Miami and Nebraska (in OT)
Kentucky - no. Iowa's wins > Florida and reeling LSU
Cincinnati - no. Iowa's wins > ND and Indiana
Oklahoma - no. Iowa's wins > Texas/K State/Nebraska, especially since all 3 were nail-biters
Okie St - no. Iowa's wins > Boise St/Baylor/K State.
All the others - no way. Not even close.
So, unless people think a team that lost in the first 6 weeks should be ranked above Iowa (I don't) - then Iowa is legitimately #2.
Will Iowa go undefeated? Probably not. Hell, 'bama, OSU, Clemson, ND already have 5 losses! Good chance no P5 school will go undefeated this year.
October 10th, 2021 at 3:31 PM ^
Iowa state has lost 2 games, and eked out a win over powerhouse NIU. Indiana is 2-3. Neither of those qualify as ‘good wins’.
October 10th, 2021 at 3:56 PM ^
Lets use SP+ since that doesn’t have useless preseason rankings included.
SP+ has Iowa at #16. UM is #8 MSU is #15 PSU is #6 and OSU is #2. Even Wisconsin is #7. So Iowa is literally behind every other B10 team in the top 10.
Iowa St. is #11. So that’s Iowa’s best win. But UM and PSU have better wins over #7 Wisconsin. Nebraska is #24. Higher than Indiana #59. So now UM has 2 wins against top 25 teams including a top #10 while Iowa has 1. Washington is #54 ahead of Indiana at #59. Iowa’s 2 best wins before PSU (#11 and #59) were not better than UMs. And they weren’t better than PSUs (beat #7 and #29 Auburn) or MSUs (beat #24 and #26 Miami).
October 10th, 2021 at 2:26 PM ^
My same opinion, only insert Cincinnati.
October 10th, 2021 at 3:04 PM ^
That's what she said.
October 10th, 2021 at 1:51 PM ^
Looks about right, I guess. Man oh man, are there some battles coming up in the Big Ten East...
October 10th, 2021 at 1:55 PM ^
I’m surprised Alabama dropped to 5. I expected 3 maybe 4 at the lowest.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:05 PM ^
Fish don't fry in the kitchen
Beans don't burn on the grill
Took a whole lotta trying
Just to get up that hill
Now we're up in the big leagues
Getting our turn at bat
As long as we live, it's you and me baby
There ain't nothing wrong with that
Well, we're moving on up...
October 10th, 2021 at 2:11 PM ^
And Texas drops completely out of the rankings. Xavier Worthy will accumulate some mind-boggling stats, be in contention for the Heisman by next year, and will probably leave as soon as possible for a huge contract in the NFL, but unless Texas gets a handle on its defense he'll never play for a championship team in Austin.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:20 PM ^
PSU still ahead of Michigan in the AP:
October 10th, 2021 at 2:33 PM ^
I do like how this is setting up in EL in three weeks. If we can pull off a win there against a top 10 team, it will be an epic showdown (if we get by a top 10 PU) against OSU. With a little luck even if with a close loss against the Buckeyes, we're should still in the playoff conversation. Gotta root against Cincinnati big time.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:58 PM ^
We’ll make the playoff with one loss IF we win the Big Ten Championship. Our resume would be better than pretty much everybody considering who we’d have to beat to get there. Again there are 5 teams in the Big Ten in the Top 10 would be hard to leave the winner out of the Playoff.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:47 PM ^
How is Oregon behind us in the AP poll. OSU is ahead of us. And OSU lost to Oregon.
October 10th, 2021 at 2:53 PM ^
A win is a win and it is just a poll and football is football so this poll looks right.
However, I am always disappointed that a team loses due to injury. PSU beats Iowa like a drum if Clifford doesn't leave the game. That tells me Iowa shouldn't be #2 but hopefully they stay there until Michigan beats them in the championship game.
