OT: favorite sports (and even non-sports!) podcasts?
Whatcha listening to these days? And am I gonna be smote if I don't admit to listening to the MGoPodcast on a frequent basis?
I'll start. You're welcome:
- Favorite sports podcast: Shutdown Fullcast. I actually only recently discovered it, but given that I've always lauded EDSBS, having Spencer on there is a treat. The whole crew really seems to like one another. Also a fan of Running Realized (which talks about diversity - or lack thereof - in the running community).
- Non-sports: have the occasional news blips (BBC, Economist) but also have liked 10 Percent Happier, Code Switch, Stay Tuned with Preet, The Moth, Hidden Brain, and the Trillbilly Workers' Party.
99% invisible, crime junkies
Seconding 99pi! Just got into it a few weeks ago and it's fascinating stuff.
I don't really listen to a lot of podcasts, which is sort of ironic considering I make them.
Non-sports: Voices of a Flyway (self promotion), Pod Save America (really the only one I listen to)
My wife is in the true Crime podcast biz. She recently switched to work for a new company and has a few new releases coming out soon that I'm not yet at liberty to talk about publicly. What genre are the podcasts that you produce?
From the 'Voices' website:
Over the course of two months we embarked on a journey, travelling north with a billion migratory songbirds as they navigated a matrix of human-impacted ecosystems from the Gulf Coast to the boreal forests of northern Minnesota. Concurrently, we spoke to people sharing the land with these birds. Together we aim to tell a story that speaks to the beauty of nature and the common bond that migratory birds and humans have with the land, including the struggles we both face living in a modern world.
There are several Esri story maps that accompany the podcast. It's my first attempt, so, you know...
Sorry for the late reply. I went internet dark for a few days to reset. That's awesome to put out a topic that you are have knowledge in. My wife, being an investigative journalist for the last 20 years focuses more on the darker side of humanity.
She has a few in the works that I can't mention because they haven't been announced yet. I will post something about them when the time comes.
I agree, Mr. Bond, on your NPR-based choices. I also like Hardcore History, especially if I'm driving 4 hours.
Then I would recommend Mike Duncan's two podcast series, the History of Rome (which won an award for historical pod casts in the early days of the medium), and Revolutions (ever wonder what really went down in the Haitian revolution, or the Latin American wars of independence?).
Mike brings a kind of sardonic realism to his narration that is sympatico with the tone here at MGOBLOG. And, his series are many episodes long with hours of material for many long road trips. Try it; you'll like it.
Thanks Matt! History geeks, unite!
second mike duncans stuff - interesting topics, you can tell he puts in the prep work, and hes got a good enough voice/cadence
Revolutions is amaizing! If you have any interest in history or political science, you will enjoy that podcast.
I will second Wilford's Hardcore History by Dan Carlin, he's the godfather of history podcasts. I also would recommend The British History Podcast if you want to learn about britain and have a lot of time on your hands.
I actually don't listen to any sports-related podcasts, and none in general recently (since there's no drive time commute to work... yet)
But the ones I have building up in my podcast app are Hardcore History, JRVP, and (occasionally) How Did This Get Made?.
I'm eager to see the lists of other folks, I'm always game to check out new material.
Season 2 of 'Crimetown' is fantastic, also. It focuses on Detroit and all the corruption from the 1960's all the way through the Mike Duggan era. A lot on Coleman Young and Kwame.
I binged the whole season in 2 days
Spittin Chiclets is pretty good. Drew and Mike podcast is also good if you liked their show on wrif years ago. Mike is gone unfortunately but Drew/Mark is still good.
Drew and Mike (Marc) is my go-to. Love those guys. It’s great to have Trudi back in the fray.
Are you Pro Maz, or Anti Maz?
I think he brings a comedic element to the show when he's on, and Drew and Marc's bantar about Maz when he's not live is also enjoyable... he's certainly a character. Also... BranDon brings it with the Boner line... the show often brings me some comic relief during stressfull days... love those guys.
Mike is never gone. He’s just currently sleeping….in his salad.
-1 for recommending a Barstool podcast
Chill, bro.
Cumtown
Can I interest you in a slightly used Chapo Trap House?
I've not been one to listen to many podcasts, aside from MGoBlog related. I did try the Shutdown Fullcast once, couldn't get through it - too many inside jokes and I didn't/don't feel like living through them. Can't say I've ever searched through them to see what's out there. Guess it's one of those 'you don't know what you're missing' things...
I do listen to a lot of audiobooks, though, on the commute and whatever longer drives I make.
My audible account is pretty backed up, but always open to some suggestions if you have any good ones that stick out!
Books are like podcasts - wide open to individual interpretation! What genre's do you like? I tend to stick with non-fiction, like histories, biographies, and explanatories. Back in the day, when I was a young Navy stud, I decided that time spent reading should be used for learnin'. It didn't take long to realize that I enjoyed learnin' about stuff from books. Haven't stopped reading since...
And now I'm smart. ::points to head, winks, nods::
If fake sports count then The Lapsed Fan wrestling podcast is the only podcast you ever need.
Wish you would've started this thread earlier. I just drove up to Michigan last Thursday and Friday. Oh well. I've always got the return trip. ?
A couple that I listened to that I liked were:
- I Spy (from Foreign Policy)
- History Extra Podcast (from the BBC)
- Philosophize This
"Office Ladies"....as I am a huge fan of "The Office".
Steve Deace

Bill Simmons pod is my favorite. Only pod I don’t get sick of. Great if you like NFL and NBA.
I've been a big fan of Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. I never watched Late Night and wouldn't have called myself a fan before, but damn is he a great interviewer and the podcasts are hilarious. It's not something you had to be a Conan-stan to enjoy. Before and after the interview there are small segments with his assistant Sona and Matt - the producer - and those will make a lot more sense if you start with episode 1, but the interviews themselves stand alone and are great entertainment.
In less-giant podcast listens, I've really enjoyed Films to be buried with - with Brett Goldstein. Brett is best known as Roy Kent on Ted Lasso, but he was originally hired as a comedy writer, not an actor for the show. In his podcast he invites on a guest from the entertainment industry and asks them 12ish questions about the films that meant the most to them, with the premise being they've died and these are the questions they'll get in film-obsessed heaven. So far I've been jumping around and listening to the podcasts featuring people I know (some of the guests are more British famous) but they've been enjoyable.
+1 for the brett goldstein podcast. he's fantastic.
He doesn't seem to have realized (or let it affect him) how big he got with Ted Lasso. It's a massive hit. Who knows how big Roy will be as a character in Season 2, but seeing as he's in the show's writers room he's going to be around. I only know him from Ted Lasso, and thus found the podcast but yeah, outstanding.
For sports, I'm a big fan of Men in Blazers
i like the yahoo college sports podcast quite a bit - pat forde, dan wetzel, and pete thamel. they truly like college sports (a lot), but they also realize and recognize how silly this all is. they make fun of everyone in a smart, informed way. as a fellow old fart, i also like the tony kornheiser podcast.
"my brother my brother and me", "flop house," and "how did this get made" also always make me laugh.
"omnibus" is great - ken jennings and john roderick talk about historical trivia. both are also super-funny guys.
"you're wrong about" is excellent.
Oh yes, co-sign on YWA. Really like it.
Upvote for anything McElroy brothers related
Titus & Tate gets me laughing like only some of my best friends can. A lot of the humor is probably generational but they take the correct approach in covering the most ridiculous sport in the country (College Basketball) in a ridiculous fashion.
I didn't know they were back at it after leaving The Ringer. Good to know.
Sports: Barstool’s Pardon My Take, and The Jim Rome Show (his daily 3 hour show cut down to 1 - 1.25 hours)
Non-Sports: Sword and Scale, and anything from 11:59 media. Both true crime genre.
Shutdown Fullcast, How Did This Get Made (comedians trashing terrible movies), the Serial family of podcasts, This American Life, In The Dark, MGoPodcasts are the only things I am subscribed to.
For sports, I like Edge of Sports, Total Soccer Show and The Lowe Post.
Non sports, Revolutions, Working People, Blowback and Binge Mode
Logged in to upvote these recs. Been listening to TSS, Revolutions and Binge Mode for a loooooong time.
Were you a Wolves fan prior to TSS? I'm mostly a Premiership agnostic, but have a soft spot for them because of Daryl
I first became a Wolves fan in 2008, while I was in college. I discovered TSS in 2013 and fell in love with it partially due to Darryl (RIP)
This thread made me sad, RIP Daryl. But we have similar podcast tastes — is blowback “a podcast about the American empire”? I’ll have to check it out. You might also like 5-4 or Behind the Bastards.
They did a series on the Iraq War (which was far superior than the Slow Burn one going on now). Just finished one on the Bay of Pigs, but it’s not available to non subscribers get, so I haven’t listened to it yet, but early reviews are good

"Two Bears, One Cave" with comedians Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer. It's mostly comedy stuff/them just trying to make each other laugh. But there are (rarely) some minor sports discussions and they even did a special episode with Warren Sapp while they watched the Super Bowl together.
