OT: Favorite Guitarist
Tired of talking about covid I know there are some major music fans on this board
curious as to who your favorite guitarist is? Can include favorite solo or song
for me right now it’s J Mascis. Until recently I had never rode the Dinosaur Jr train but since I’ve gotten on I can’t get off (lol)
Used to be a huge fan of David Gilmore, the solo on Mother is so damn beautiful it makes me cry
Peter Buck
Johnny Marr
Billy Corgan
Stone and Mike
EVH ?
+1 for Johnny F-in' Marr.
+1 for Johnny Marr
Gossard and McCready compliment each other so well... Good call. Tough to choose between one of them.
Yeah, they're pretty amazing. And Abbruzzese in that lineup was incredible.
I would also like to add Slash and The Edge. I saw both bands in 2017(?) and those dudes killed. Bono kinda stunk (and was maybe a little inebriated?) but the Edge was great, even on the keyboard parts. I was so impressed with how tight he was. I also loved Rivers Cuomo in concert; could really play.
And I have to mention Tom Morello. And Kirk Hammett and James Hetifled. Those dudes are true masters.
Cool Story Bro: I had a college class with Tom’s mom once, unbeknownst to me. One day I walk into class a few minutes early, and there she is sitting next to her son. I was listening to Audioslave on my iPod (2003-ish) at the moment, and the confusion crashed my brain for a minute.
He talked a bit to the class, but funny enough, I can’t remember what he said, but more about what his mom, Mary, said, who has had an amazing life in her own right.
That's a great story actually. I would be psyched about that.
He actually tweeted about something I worked on once and I was thrilled. I printed it out and taped it up to the wall next to my desk.
If Billy Corgan could sing, SP would have been one of the greatest bands of all time.
Ditto for Geddy Lee and Rush.
Insulting.
The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the greatest Alt Rock bands in history.
Rush are one of the greatest bands in rock history.
BTW, Waits, Springsteen & Dylan can't sing a lick either...
Neil Young - How's his voice?
One thing they all share is originality.
Jimi.
Jimi
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Eddie Van Halen. The beginning of hot for teacher feels like a roller coaster
So many but here's a few that stand out:
Jerry Cantrell on "Rooster"
Slash on "Estranged"
Dire Straits guy on "Sultans of Swing"
Eric Clapton "It's In The Way That You Use It"
All these dudes made the guitar sing.
Mark Knopfler = Dire Straits guy
Pretty much every single Dire Straits song demonstrates Knopfler's guitar genius.
And if anyone is interested in guitar skills, YouTube search for Knopfler and Chet Atkins. They collaborated on some duets, and the musicianship on display is astonishing.
I'll add this here: Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed, and Roy Clark were all outstanding guitarists. Ritchie Blackmore, of Deep Purple, and famous for being dismissive of other guitarists, was complimentary of Roy Clark.
How about the guy Clapton said was the greatest he ever heard...Duane Allman? As for peak Duane, how about Stormy Monday? Or in a best supporting role the slide guitar for the second half of Layla? Or maybe some of his Muscle Shoals session work? For a true forgotten piece of genius check out his work on Boz Scaggs "Loan Me A Dime."
Allman > Clapton for me
I always thought Clapton had that famous quote about someone else (maybe I'm remembering it wrong). The way I remember it was someone asked "what's it like being the best guitarist in the world?" and he said "I don't know, ask Prince", which I always thought was such a badass answer because people tend to forget how gnarly Prince is at the guitar.
lol - that one's been around forever.
Just insert 2 of your favorite guitarists.
"Loan me a Dime" is a great way to spend 13 minutes.
Too many to count.
Gilmore, Prince, Hendrix, Page, Frusciante, Eddie
People might balk at Frusciante but listen to RHCP albums with and without him. Night and day.
So true about Frusciante
All of those are some of my favorites, Cube.
But I'm also a huge jazz aficionado and Pat Metheny is about as great a guitarist as there ever was, Lyle Mays is his band mate and he's one of the best ever on keyboards.
Another fantastic jazz guitarist is George Benson.
You ask any rock guitarist and they'll tell you that playing jazz guitar is the hardest to play.
Great call on the jazz musicians. George Benson is the real deal. Him, Metheny, Carlton, etc. are among those that would play a line and make you stop in your tracks to make sure you really just heard that.
Don't forget Detroit's Earl Klugh when talking jazz - saw in a couple years ago at MIM in Phx and George Benson was sitting behind us.
Def Pat Metheny.
And keeping with Detroit - Jack White is a beast!
Another Detroit jazz guitarist, Kenny Burrell.
Nels Cline of Wilco and his own group, and Julian Lage.
John Prine. Man only played three chords, but boy did he play them well.
then Prince.
Three chords and the truth.
Johnny P. Is an absolute legend. Sucks that he passed recently.
Hendrix
Stevie Ray
Page
Doc Watson
Billy Strings
+1 in Doc Watson. Should be more bluegrass artists on this list from purely a technical skill standpoint. And Doc set that bar.
Slowhand
Not after he got sober though. 70/80s Clapton was best new age blues but Stevie Ray was clearly becoming THE guy but died young
Surprised to get this far in and see no mention of Jerry Garcia. The man could make you laugh, cry, and see God by bending just one note.

Maybe that’s the psychedelics
Marty McFly
I don't think the board is ready for that one yet, but their kids are going to love it.
It’s just too darn loud.
I'm not claiming he's the *best* but John Mayer is insane.
He does a decent Jerry Garcia.
He's more talented than Jerry, but Jerry was a much better guitarist.
I have a really hard time narrowing down favorite anythings, but in going to shout out Larry Carlton, especially for his solo in Kid Charlemagne
+1 for Larry Carlton reference. Saw him in concert. Insanely good / entertaining.
Love that solo. Also partial to Jeff Baxter's work on My Old School.
I like Eric Clapton
Always loved Clapton. He sold me when he did Me and Mr. Johnson. The guitar work was simple, but perfect
Probably Charo.
