OT: Haskins off to the Steelers
January 21st, 2021 at 2:36 PM ^
Phew, thought it was Hassan....
January 21st, 2021 at 2:40 PM ^
Haha! Had the exact same thought! Nearly pissed myself...
"How the fuck could the Steelers pull him straight out of college?!"
January 21st, 2021 at 2:38 PM ^
NOOOO NOT HASSA......
Oh. That one. Carry on then.
January 21st, 2021 at 2:39 PM ^
No disrespect to the OP, but I don't care!
January 21st, 2021 at 2:41 PM ^
Not sure I would bring on an immature shithead to a proud franchise like that, hmm.
January 21st, 2021 at 2:44 PM ^
have you been paying attention to the steelers lately? it's a roster of unaccountable shitheads coached by a guy who holds no one accountable for being a shithead.
January 21st, 2021 at 2:54 PM ^
Yeah the Steelers head coach sucks!!! Looks around, yeah nobody else in the world agrees.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:22 PM ^
didn't say he sucked.
January 21st, 2021 at 5:45 PM ^
I have gradually shed sports as I've gotten older, but I was a huge Steelers fan for much of my life. This take is correct. Tomlin is a great coach, but he hasn't held guys accountable. Fans can point to moments when personal fouls etc. don't really seem to result in any problem for the player. It's odd. He's a great coach, but he really needs a locker room that holds itself accountable to be at his best.
January 22nd, 2021 at 8:22 AM ^
I wish he'd come coach our Wolverines. They will need a franchise QB this coming year or next. Haskins isn't and will never be that guy. The Steelers are looking at some down years in the near future. Could be time for Mike to leave.
January 21st, 2021 at 8:59 PM ^
I liked his character in the program, figured out that fumbling problem.
January 21st, 2021 at 2:58 PM ^
Yawn, 12-4 won the division move along, nothing to see here.
Wish I had those problems.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
Oh no!!! One WR on their team uses that new-fangled social media app to garner a larger fanbase and does silly dances! What a total shithead of a player with a shithead for a head coach! /s
January 21st, 2021 at 3:21 PM ^
i love juju and i love tomlin, but it's very clear there is a top down lack of leadership and accountability and the past decade in pittsburgh is proof of it. it's systemic. the steelers facade is powerful to outsiders, but this is real. i've watched it for a decade.
January 22nd, 2021 at 2:20 PM ^
Fart noise
January 21st, 2021 at 4:47 PM ^
Sounds like Ohio State, amirite?

I don't think it's a bad move. Roethlisberger is 38 and may be approaching the end of his career. Haskins on the other hand has just been released by the team that drafted him. It may be enough of an ego hit to make him more coachable, although I'm inclined to doubt it.
They're also unlikely to be paying him a lot; I'm sure there are performance bonuses in the contract, but he's not going to hit them unless Roethlisberger goes out. I would be surprised if he sticks in Pittsburgh, but Pittsburgh is not losing much if he fails.
Pittsburgh could also draft a quarterback, which would make Haskins even more expendable.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:01 PM ^
Roethlisberger is 38 and may be approaching the end of his career.
Tbh I'm not sure how he's even still playing, lumbering around like Frankenstein's Monster out there but somehow still throws pretty well. PED's are a hell of a drug.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:27 PM ^
He did miss almost all of 2019.
January 21st, 2021 at 6:01 PM ^
Throws pretty well? Thats pretty much a no. Guy can barely arm punt it more than 5 yards down the field.
I doubt the Haskins deal will move the needle much but guessing its a very low salary and not much down side to a one-year deal, esp being they have starting QB already, even if he is mediocre himself
January 22nd, 2021 at 10:06 AM ^
I should've clarified, "throws pretty well" within the context of the dink and dunk offense they ran in the 2nd half of the season. I agree down the field shots not so much.

Speculation in Pittsburgh from some has been they might look at a quarterback at the end of the first round, someone like Jones or Trask. But so many holes elsewhere on the roster. Then speculation shifted towards maybe a former pick who still has potential, someone like Rosen or Darnold, or even Wentz.
The couple times I saw Haskins name show up in writing, that was apparently where the Steeler fan base drew the line! Not many people excited about this signing!
January 21st, 2021 at 6:38 PM ^
Pittsburgh is so deep in salary cap hell that Darnold/Wentz would not be options given the monies they will expect (even as plan B options). Rosen, possibly, though he has really not demonstrated any NFL ability in his career. While they will have some cap freedom in 22/23 they will need to extend TJ Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Post Roethlisberger (whenever that is) they will need to gut that team and start over (which will kill Pittsburgh fans but will be necessary).
Haskins is clearly an idiot (not shocking) but signing him to a futures deal is probably not unreasonable.
January 21st, 2021 at 9:16 PM ^
Haskins is merely a camp arm. This is like when the Lions signed Connor Cook.

"Roethlisberger is 38 and may be approaching the end of his career"
May? He is, it's not like he takes care of himself like Brady. That dude looks like a middle-aged huge dude, who pounds a couple of cases of brews each weekend. I cannot imagine he holds the whole pro athlete thing for much longer.

....why not as they already have Roethlisberger, so he should fit in just fine!
January 21st, 2021 at 2:43 PM ^
LMAO!!! You knew exactly wtf you were doing here. Nevertheless, I did laugh at the reactions. AND, my dumbass did think it was Hassan too!
January 21st, 2021 at 2:45 PM ^
Big Ben, Juju, Diontae Johnson, Claypool, and Haskins in one locker room.
The babysitter bill is gonna be through the roof
January 21st, 2021 at 2:49 PM ^
Not to be that guy, but is this worthy of being a board post?
(JK. I totally love being that guy)
January 21st, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
Totally agree with you EYB. Don't really care if or where he plays football....
January 21st, 2021 at 3:00 PM ^
Another Buckeye just failing upwards somehow... going from one of the most dysfunctional franchises to one of the best in the league.
Offensively, the Steelers are a pretty good fit for Haskins’s skill sets and play style, and Big Ben is on the very tail-end of his career now.
So either this move gets the Steelers a very cheap, future replacement or they draft one after the experiment fails.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:14 PM ^
Got DAMN, MAN!!! Next time use the first name, mmmkay? Thanks...
January 21st, 2021 at 3:24 PM ^
I thought college football had gotten WAY more interesting for a second.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:28 PM ^
a short stint on the practice squad, i'm gonna project.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:40 PM ^
I guess I'm the only one who thinks this is a good signing for both parties. I don't really care about the Steelers.
January 21st, 2021 at 3:48 PM ^
Makes sense, I guess. If you need to replace a repulsive, disgusting piece of shit human being, there aren’t many better places to look than osu
January 21st, 2021 at 3:54 PM ^
As someone who has been had by misleading OP titles (e.g. Washington DC), I don’t see how anyone could have thought a college player could go straight to a pro team without first doing the whole draft thing.
January 21st, 2021 at 4:28 PM ^
One more reason to hate the Steelers.
January 21st, 2021 at 4:31 PM ^
Hey Pittsburgh fans, next year's Super Bowl is in LA. With this signing, better start booking flights and hotels right now!!!
January 21st, 2021 at 4:52 PM ^
Maybe they can pay a million bucks per TD pass too!
January 21st, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
He will be CFL bound in 2 years
January 21st, 2021 at 5:03 PM ^
Might not be that bad of a move. I'm sure they can get him for dirt cheap since Haskins has no real leverage to work with. They can try to groom him behind Rothlisberger for a year or two (presuming Rothlisberger doesn't retire), hope he learns well enough to take over, and then if not, they cut him loose and not really lose anything of value.
Its pretty clear that the Steeler's future does NOT run through Mason Rudolph, so seeing what other options they might have makes sense. Roll the dice on a kid drafted in the first round, give him a fresh start and hope that a change of scenery in a stable, proud organization will be exactly what he needs.
January 21st, 2021 at 5:08 PM ^
Damn shame the Bucks' QB's are always a bust in the NFL, damn shame. PS: I hope Fields blows too.
January 21st, 2021 at 5:10 PM ^
As a Washingtonian, who saw D Haskins play in high school, college, and fo WFT....he's great if he only needs to see 1/3 of the field and his receivers are wide open. All other circumstances, he's a frustrating QB to back.
January 21st, 2021 at 8:00 PM ^
Oh, it gets worse. They are also interviewing Pep Hamilton for OC.
January 21st, 2021 at 9:19 PM ^
I thought they were going with Hue Jackson?
Interestingly, it looks like Urban Meyer has tapped Darrell Bevell to be his OC.
