Rational Takes - Who do we get?
I'm a longer term season ticket holder (back when you could actually go to games and things like that). I'm upset with this outcome and you too are probably upset with this outcome.
Rational takes then: who do we get if the Harbaugh experiment hasn't worked? Looking back at RichRod, Hoke and now Harbaugh (and I acknowledge the this team is a lot better off than Hoke era) but not good enough.
So who do we get?
Do we sell our souls and get Urban. Honestly, on this day, I think I'm willing.

In order to beat Adam Sandler, we’ve got to coach like Adam Sandler.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
That's exactly what started the 10 year war, hiring a Buckeye (Bo) to beat a Buckeye (Woody).
Plus they owe us for grabbing Al Washington and Greg Mattison
October 31st, 2020 at 6:42 PM ^
Well, that seemed to work out pretty well with our offensive line at least. Via MN but still counts.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:05 PM ^
I wouldn’t mind Brent Venables from Clemson.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
Does Luke Fickell hate Michigan like Urban? If he’d come, him.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
Its year 6, it is what it is. I don't know who you get, but if you have dreams of being a top 5 or top 10 program again, Harbaugh is not getting us there. He's a perennial 9-3 and we finish ranked in the 10-15 range coach
October 31st, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
I wish that people would stop saying that he is "perennial 9-3"
He has lost more than 3 games in 2 out of his 5 years and he will lose more than 3 this year too.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:43 PM ^
Pure numbers wise, an average season has been 9.4-3.4 since he's been at Michigan. But...it was 20-6 in his first two seasons at Michigan, 28-12 since then with a 5-loss and 4-loss season mixed in...likely another 4+ loss season coming this year.
Or...another way to put it is that he was 20-4 before the JT Barrett game, and has been 28-14 since then. That game seems to have broken him.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:41 PM ^
Not saying it is because of this, but it is interesting that basically aligns with the transition form Hoke players to Harbaugh players.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:13 PM ^
15 to 20 you mean. His average finish is 18
October 31st, 2020 at 4:13 PM ^
Luckily he’s an expert on covid, because his coaching could use some improvement
October 31st, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
Probably Luke Fickell which is ironic
October 31st, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
He could follow the Gary Moeller career path. Moeller had some great games against OSU too.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:08 PM ^
Milton looks like it's an MLB game thats 17-3 and we brought in a utility infielder to pitch
October 31st, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
It makes you wonder how Milton won the job so cleanly. I wouldn't say that he was terrible today but his accuracy really needs work.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:09 PM ^
This loss is going to impact recruiting too
October 31st, 2020 at 4:10 PM ^
#1 Luke Fickell.
#2 Mark Stoops -- not a perfect solution but he is an awesome recruiter
#3 Jeff Brohm -- I'll bet that he'd take the job
#4 PJ Fleck (he's a clown and he might be a one trick pony but I'll take a chance at this point)
#5 Tom Allen (Debord hiring is forgivable)
#6 Greg Schiano (he had his team much better prepared to start this season)
#7 Mel Tucker -- accomplished more in his second game than Harbaugh in 6 years
#8 Who fucking cares? Anyone but Harbaugh.
Stop pretending that there's nobody better out there. There are plenty of candidates.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
You sound stupid.
October 31st, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
Keep an eye on Eli Drinkwitz at Mizzou. He's a legitimate offensive innovator and a great recruiter.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
Matt Campbell
October 31st, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
I'll take it.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
Seconded
October 31st, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
Urban Meyer.
Neg away. Throw him $9 mil a year and a promise no one in the AD department will interfere with him and I bet he would do it.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:14 PM ^
Unrealistic, but you don't need Urban to get an upgrade. Besides, if Urban follows the money cannon, it will be to go to Texas, not UM.
October 31st, 2020 at 6:04 PM ^
Urban’s not coming to Michigan. Stop. If he coaches he’s heading to USC
October 31st, 2020 at 4:23 PM ^
Honestly, I could see him interested in seeing if he can be the guy who actually gets Michigan over the hump. But that assumes he's not too beholden to Ohio State (he probably is) or is in good enough health to handle the stress (the biggest reason he likely won't coach again).
October 31st, 2020 at 4:14 PM ^
I dont flipping care at this point. If we are going to lose 3-4 games a year id rather see something exciting on offense. When Urban Meyer can game plan the winning scheme from a studio against our offense then it isn't much. I always say to give a coach 5 years to get all of his people in there. Year 5 wasn't good and year 6 isn't going any better so its time.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:27 PM ^
I’d amend this to say going 8-4 consistently but being .500 against OSU is better than going 9-3 consistently and being 0-fer against OSU.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:05 PM ^
There are currently zero (0) teams or coaches who consistently go 8-4 and beat OSU
OSU only loses to the best teams (Clemson) or random games against terrible teams they aren't prepared for (Iowa, Purdue). We are cursed as a program to have OSU as a measuring stick, because to consistently compete with them, you have to be on Clemson's level, full stop.
October 31st, 2020 at 5:33 PM ^
That’s interesting because LSU and Auburn play well against Alabama, and while I agree they are probably not .500 against Alabama over the last 16 years, I doubt they are 1-15 against them either.
Michigan has all of the resources to be able to at least win 25% - 33% of the time vs. OSU. If Harbaugh can’t get closer to that frequency, then I don’t think he is the right coach for Michigan.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:15 PM ^
Brent Venables come on down!
- Not a "Michigan Man"
- Elite D Coordinator
- Elite Recruiter
- Proven track record and comes from a great coaching tree
- Could probably convince higher ups to start paying players big $$$ and being more lax on players attending class
October 31st, 2020 at 4:43 PM ^
Forgot to mention he has *the best* results against Ohio St (Meyer and Day) which would be nice, obviously.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
Campbell from ISU
October 31st, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
Jim gets one shot to beat Ohio. If loss - Urban Meyer who will forgive for the Ohio and the crimes and the murders as I'm sure he's learned his lesson, or... drumrolll...
CHARLES WOODSON. Natty winner as a player, unlike Jim, and a Super Bowl to be boot. Proper Champion. DB's won't get cooked like that in a Woodson regime either. Proper winner and champion. Don't @ me.

If Michigan chose to part ways with Harbaugh (which they won’t under any circumstance this year I believe) then pushing for a guy like Fickell would be best.
That being said that won’t happen. Fickell would probably never consider coming here.
Like others have said in this thread you need a complete break/change in culture and approach. “The team the team the team” crap and things the program has been holding on for 40 years is not helping. There are too many that think Michigan belongs because of what they have done. When in fact they don’t belong because of what they are doing now.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:21 PM ^
I disagree that Fickell wouldn't come here. Moeller did.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:42 PM ^
Make him an offer he can’t refuse
October 31st, 2020 at 4:16 PM ^
I think you do whatever it takes to get Venables. The guy is from Kansas, it isn't like he is scared of the cold. College football is a business, deal with it. If Clemson gives guys benefits and class waivers, you do it too.
Outside of him, my parents would remind me that Jamey Chadwell has Coastal Carolina at 6-0. He was a college QB, 43 years old and has the stink of potential recruiting violations, which I look at as a positive.
If you want to be all 2020 and go away from whitey, Dell McGee would be a flyer I could get behind or Jimmy Lake, who is probably not available.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:18 PM ^
Matt Campbell
Joe Brady
Brent Venables
Luke Fickell
We gotta stop pretending that there are no good options out there.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
For a while, I wasn't sold on Venables as I've never really loved those "fiery" DCs who go around chest bumping everyone. With that said, results speak for themselves and Venables will definitely recruit.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:21 PM ^
I agree, I think we need to get someone from a winning program that will have instant recruiting chops.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:31 PM ^
The second you say Matt Campbell, I can’t take you seriously anymore.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:19 PM ^
Our next coach doesn’t need to be a known name... I think we have to get a under the radar guy and start from scratch
October 31st, 2020 at 4:41 PM ^
Like Brady Hoke? You’ve had a lot of stupid hot takes today.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:20 PM ^
Joe Brady
October 31st, 2020 at 4:41 PM ^
Brady will be coaching an NFL team by the start of the new year. Michigan can’t compete for that guy’s services.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:20 PM ^
And if Michigan is dead set on keeping Harbaugh then they need to go all out and get some serious recruiting machines. Get the money cannon out and get some young recruiters in there. Stop with the lame position coaches.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
And if Michigan is dead set on keeping Harbaugh then they need to go all out and get some serious recruiting machines.
I think we have several, just not enough. I think Moore, Gattis, & Jay are all very good. The problem is we let several go in GMatt, Washington, & Partridge. I understand it would be hard to keep Washington. But, I would have rather seen Partridge & GMatt share the d-coordinator job and let Brown go. JH is too loyal to Brown. Brown had a good run, but it's over. Brown's defense won't work against elite QBs and might not work this year at all without at least one #1 CB.
October 31st, 2020 at 4:44 PM ^
Need elite recruiter for the secondary and the dline. I'm too ready for Brown to go. I think Jean Mary will be fine. Need young, energetic recruiters. Nua, Shoop, Zordich and Brown are horrible recruiters and half ass coaches.
