Rational Takes - Who do we get?

Submitted by clarkiefromcanada on October 31st, 2020 at 3:58 PM

I'm a longer term season ticket holder (back when you could actually go to games and things like that). I'm upset with this outcome and you too are probably upset with this outcome.

Rational takes then: who do we get if the Harbaugh experiment hasn't worked? Looking back at RichRod, Hoke and now Harbaugh (and I acknowledge the this team is a lot better off than Hoke era) but not good enough.

So who do we get?

Do we sell our souls and get Urban. Honestly, on this day, I think I'm willing.

Its year 6, it is what it is. I don't know who you get, but if you have dreams of being a top 5 or top 10 program again, Harbaugh is not getting us there. He's a perennial 9-3 and we finish ranked in the 10-15 range coach

Pure numbers wise, an average season has been 9.4-3.4 since he's been at Michigan.  But...it was 20-6 in his first two seasons at Michigan, 28-12 since then with a 5-loss and 4-loss season mixed in...likely another 4+ loss season coming this year.

Or...another way to put it is that he was 20-4 before the JT Barrett game, and has been 28-14 since then.  That game seems to have broken him.

#1 Luke Fickell.

#2 Mark Stoops -- not a perfect solution but he is an awesome recruiter

#3 Jeff Brohm -- I'll bet that he'd take the job

#4 PJ Fleck (he's a clown and he might be a one trick pony but I'll take a chance at this point)

#5 Tom Allen (Debord hiring is forgivable)

#6 Greg Schiano (he had his team much better prepared to start this season)

#7 Mel Tucker -- accomplished more in his second game than Harbaugh in 6 years

#8 Who fucking cares?  Anyone but Harbaugh.

Stop pretending that there's nobody better out there.  There are plenty of candidates.

I dont flipping care at this point. If we are going to lose 3-4 games a year id rather see something exciting on offense. When Urban Meyer can game plan the winning scheme from a studio against our offense then it isn't much. I always say to give a coach 5 years to get all of his people in there. Year 5 wasn't good and year 6 isn't going any better so its time.

There are currently zero (0) teams or coaches who consistently go 8-4 and beat OSU

OSU only loses to the best teams (Clemson) or random games against terrible teams they aren't prepared for (Iowa, Purdue). We are cursed as a program to have OSU as a measuring stick, because to consistently compete with them, you have to be on Clemson's level, full stop.

That’s interesting because LSU and Auburn play well against Alabama, and while I agree they are probably not .500 against Alabama over the last 16 years, I doubt they are 1-15 against them either.
Michigan has all of the resources to be able to at least win 25% - 33% of the time vs. OSU. If Harbaugh can’t get closer to that frequency, then I don’t think he is the right coach for Michigan.

Brent Venables come on down!

- Not a "Michigan Man"

- Elite D Coordinator

- Elite Recruiter

- Proven track record and comes from a great coaching tree

- Could probably convince higher ups to start paying players big $$$ and being more lax on players attending class

Jim gets one shot to beat Ohio.  If loss - Urban Meyer who will forgive for the Ohio and the crimes and the murders as I'm sure he's learned his lesson, or... drumrolll...

CHARLES WOODSON.    Natty winner as a player, unlike Jim, and a Super Bowl to be boot.  Proper Champion.  DB's won't get cooked like that in a Woodson regime either.   Proper winner and champion.    Don't @ me.

If Michigan chose to part ways with Harbaugh (which they won’t under any circumstance this year I believe) then pushing for a guy like Fickell would be best.

That being said that won’t happen. Fickell would probably never consider coming here.

Like others have said in this thread you need a complete break/change in culture and approach. “The team the team the team” crap and things the program has been holding on for 40 years is not helping. There are too many that think Michigan belongs because of what they have done. When in fact they don’t belong because of what they are doing now.

I think you do whatever it takes to get Venables.  The guy is from Kansas, it isn't like he is scared of the cold.  College football is a business, deal with it.  If Clemson gives guys benefits and class waivers, you do it too.

Outside of him, my parents would remind me that Jamey Chadwell has Coastal Carolina at 6-0.  He was a college QB, 43 years old and has the stink of potential recruiting violations, which I look at as a positive.

If you want to be all 2020 and go away from whitey, Dell McGee would be a flyer I could get behind or Jimmy Lake, who is probably not available.

And if Michigan is dead set on keeping Harbaugh then they need to go all out and get some serious recruiting machines. Get the money cannon out and get some young recruiters in there. Stop with the lame position coaches.

I think we have several, just not enough.  I think Moore, Gattis, & Jay are all very good.  The problem is we let several go in GMatt, Washington, & Partridge.  I understand it would be hard to keep Washington.  But, I would have rather seen Partridge & GMatt share the d-coordinator job and let Brown go.  JH is too loyal to Brown.  Brown had a good run, but it's over.  Brown's defense won't work against elite QBs and might not work this year at all without at least one #1 CB.
