OT: Rumor, Large Amounts of Atlanta Police calling in sick
This is scary.
Rumor is that many Atlanta police are calling in sick after a cop from the recent shooting was charged with felony murder.
Atlanta PD's Twitter is downplaying it, but people are pointing out that many of the Atlanta police zones have dead air on their radio. I did use the online police scanner and it was dead air when I was tuned in for whatever zone I chose. Allegedly Atlanta asked the suburb police departments for help and they said they would only respond to "officer down" calls.
This could get ugly if many cops don't show up to work.
Could be missing something, but such action might only serve as confirmation of a certain kind of fairly pervasive ugly among them.
I think you are missing something.
Do tell! What would it be he's missing?
I'll start a wild rumor! Atlanta PD would love to continue being the upstanding protectors of the community that they claim to be, but have been laid low by a very sudden and widespread bout of COVID.
Let's see how long until our new mod locks this thread, this could get ugly.
Isn't a Blue Out something like a Defund, except they still get paid?
Win-win
Seems like more of a lose-lose to me.
I kinda think the OT section of the board has gotten out of control. I mean the board is starting to look less and less like a Michigan sports blog and more and more like the front page of reddit. And while I do think this is interesting I believe that this post and some of the other posts I’ve seen don’t belong on this board. I mean look at it this way how many of the last few posts have been about actual sports. And I get it’s a dead period but maybe we could actual get a few more sports posts out there once and a while. But this is just my opinion
I agree with you. This should get taken down.
I think most of the post about politics or about the current climate of the country should Be taken down. Because everyone on this board is brought together by Michigan sports but I think politics divides us and creates turmoil on the board. Now I’m not trying to rip on the OP either because I think this is very interesting but I think it might fit a little bit more on something like Reddit.
When you have no Michigan sports and your advertising is linked to the number of readers, perhaps a bit of latitude about other topics might be justified.
If you look at a thread title and are offended by the possibility it might be politically or otherwise tinged, don't read it or at the very least, stop whining about it because obviously others care or they wouldn't be posting comments.
Why is it whining when someone doesn’t agree with you? News flash when you become an adult it’s expected that your going to be able to understand that not everyone has the same viewpoint.
Politics doesn't divide us. The fact that 35% of the country are white nationalist fucks divides us. Big difference.
This is funny ...it’s like saying I stand for freedom and diversity in thought so long as you think exactly like me. In my opinion to be white and love your country doesn’t equal hating black and brown people and thinking they’re lives are not valuable. Your never going to influence an individuals thought patterns by yelling at them and telling them they are wrong and are “fucks” it only serves to make you feel better that you did it.
You missed a decimal point before the 35. The fact that people believe a number like 35% is the real problem in this country.
It isn't 0.35% and it isn't 35% (which would be 57% of the white population).
Regardless, we have some issues that need to be fixed and arguing about exact proportions is missing the point.
No. It's not missing the point. The problem we have right now is there is a narrative that there is a large number of racists in this country. I simply don't believe that. I think that a few bad apples behavior has been magnified to create the impression that there are racists lurking behind every tree and bush. It's madness.
There are 328 million people in this country. Of course you are going to have racist incidents perpetrated by actual racists. But we managed to have a black man as President for 8 years and no one even took a shot at him. Do you honestly think that would have happened in a truly racist nation? Hell, do you think a black man could have even become President in a truly racist nation? Less than 50 years after Dr. King's march? Amazing!
We are never going to get rid of all racists. Never. But I do believe we had done a good job marginalizing them. Ignoring them until their cause had faded to obscurity.
I think .35% is much closer. And it's still too many.
Yep. But here in ‘merica we have a liberal owned media that takes EVERY opportunity to point out the 1 bad interaction out of 300,000,000 with police and make it LOOK like all police are bad white people out hunting black people and committing genocide...because, well...it fits their political agenda, gets clicks, and will maybe even get their presidential candidate with Alzheimer’s elected!!
Good luck to all you folks in democrat run cities. I’m guessing it won’t be long before you are looking to move into a more conservative/republican type city when all the cops leave your city and want to come work in ours. We’ll see how your holding up when that happens.
Also, if you get a minute...google “Daniel Shaver”. I bet you’ve never heard of him. Wonder why?
Keep drinking the Kool-Aid, J-Train. "Liberal owned media"? Fox News? Sinclair Broadcast Group?
We do have quite a few racists in this country. Probably a lot more than you’d care to admit. But there are varying degrees of racist. You don’t have to dress up in your Klan robes every Friday night and call the black kids down the street racial slurs to be racist.
Theres overt racists, which would be people like I just mentioned. And then there’s covert racism. Where you may not even realize that what you are saying, doing, or feeling is racist. This could be like a person keeping a bit of extra distance between themselves and a black man walking down the sidewalk. You aren’t necessarily projecting your racism outwards in a destructive way, but you can’t really deny the racist undertones of that either.
Politics does indeed divide us. Topics like wearing a mask, the environment & anything else you care to name have become politicized. The fact is everyone benefits from a clean environment and good public health.
Mistaking policy for politics is the biggest mistake people make.
What a clown move to N.Korea
Yeah the biggest problem is that for most people on this board this seems to be the only Internet forum they visit. Which is why people ask questions about gravies talk about their politics.
i totally agree with you. but sports are no longer immune to politics
Yeah that’s true but I still think there’s a lot of topics that can be avoided
Joe, the players disagree.
I don't know what we're going to do with that?!
Just google Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy caving in to this crap for wearing a tee shirt with OAN on it while on his personal vacation.
To your point, you would be ok, and his players and this University should also be ok, with him "while on his personal vacation" also wearing a white pointed hood and robe??? I certainly hope not!
Did you come across this when you googled Mike Gundy?
You don't think OAN is racist?
Wow. More people than I would've expected on here think OAN is legit, rather than racist conspiracy theory bullshit.
Post a racist statement or article from OAN back up your accusations
Omigod!
An overt, proud, aggressive OAN supporter!
Great...?
There is a BLM thread on the Lions board I frequent that is over 300 posts and surprisingly enough I think it's stayed fairly civil so far. Obviously some disagreements but it hasn't devolved into name calling.
But it's not just a dead period. This isn't just like the recruiting dead period. There are literally no sports being played and there hasn't been anything for months. This is entirely unprecedented. If there was something interesting to talk about with sports, we would. Sure it would be quiet regarding football but right now we would normally have baseball and the NBA playoffs and the Stanley cup finals would have just ended. And a bunch of other sports WD would occasionally talk about.
Does this board suck now? Of course it does, but I seriously don't know what people expect here.
The last two stories of covid shutdown and Floyd protests are probably two biggest stories of many of our lives. It's expected to be discussed.
Kind of hard to get excited about who will be the 3rd wide receiver this year when the world is going thru some major changes
There can't be that much mayhem in Atlanta, Michigan on a typical Wednesday evening anyway.
Unless the local elk population decides to take advantage and revolt.
Antlers up, motherfuckers!
dude, they got poachers there. elk poachers.
ELM.
every time I drive on I-75 north of Grayling I see the sign for the number for info on elk herd migration. My twisted mind wonders how many elk have cell phones, and are they legal migrants? (or just fleeing oppression in Otsego County)
This is why so many are protesting. “The Thin Blue Line” is a crock. Hold shitty cops accountable for doing shitty things. If others don’t like it, quit and hire ones that will.
Sounds like police departments everywhere need culture changes like what Camden, NJ did.
The thin blue line is not a crock. I would urge you not to view/judge people as collectively. Historically...that has always ended poorly.
As have any comments I have made here on any topic.
It’s not rocket science.
When you belong to a group, and members of that group are doing bad things in the name of the group, then at some point the other members of that group are culpable for the actions of those other members when they choose to not take a stand against those actions. This is true even historically.
One cop pushed the elderly man in Buffalo. He’s a bad cop. The other cops who stood there and watched, didn’t help the man, and didn’t take action against the officer who pushed the man, are all also bad cops. All the cops who stand by while their brothers and sisters in the badge are committing police brutality, are all bad cops. Period. It’s not complicated. It’s not rocket science.
quit and hire ones that will.
I think this is going to be the larger problem going forward.. who the hell would want to be a law enforcement officer in today's climate? Low pay, dangerous work, and they have the spotlight of America (literally) on them at all times now. Police get very little to zero respect, and yet society asks them to deal with all of the problems society doesn't really want to deal with themselves. You couldn't pay me enough to be an officer in today's societal climate.. it's just not worth it.
Sounds a lot like teaching, only minus the 4 year degree.
Police make way fucking more than teachers, and tmpolice departments get way more funding than school districts.
That is maybe where some of our issues stem from?
