To start, there’s a chance now Toronto Maple Leafs fans won’t have to be subject to their annual flameout in the playoffs.
I’ve always enjoyed those so it’s not a bright side

I've realized my beer drinking was completely dependent upon my sports viewing schedule, so I'm hoping to lose some weight in the next couple months.

Beer? Don't lie to us Vladdy. We all know your ruskie choice of beverage:

a long list of farm chores can get done with no sports interruptions. we homeschool all the kids, with the older ones co-oping with the local public school for a couple of classes. now with no sports to play (they all play sports, track, hoops, you name it) it'll be farm work to fill their extra time. i've already got a list started. it will be wonderful....
March 14th, 2020 at 12:06 PM ^
Farm work and sports overlap in your family, right? Hockey stick round up comes to mind.
March 14th, 2020 at 12:53 PM ^
those two things, along with faith, happen every single day. and for hockey stick round-up, see my OP from yesterday with full description thereof. i still don't know how he turned those two bulls as he sprinted down the hill toward the barn/pasture. older brother sleepily walking behind...
Yeah, I read that yesterday and it brought to mind my one and only time out in the pasture with cows. Scared shitless I was.
they may have the last laugh yet re: sports. as i write this they are making a list of events to have what amounts to an olympic competition. non-standard events at that.

Work em' till they drop. Build that character and toughness, then send them to UM to play football or basketball :)
We need some more farm bred toughness!

What's a King Lear?
He invented the jet.
It's like a Chuck Liddell but with out the lettuce.

Did he, though? #anonymous
Underrated movie anyone?

I enjoyed every minute of that game. Not sure I see the silver lining in its absence.

Spending more time with family. Getting a project done that you've always thought about but never had time to do. Binging some new Netflix serious you've had in your list forever. Focusing on improving yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Lots of options for those of us who tend to forget about life outside sports.

Channel surfing no sports

Sports shutdown has like zero relevance to me atm. Sure it feels weird to instinctively check scores on the apps and it all just says "cancelled" or "postponed", but really this is the kind of situation where we are in a large societal crisis and the only thing of any importance is how we overcome this crisis.
Maybe the silver lining of the cancellation of sports is that it allows more people to understand the magnitude of this situation.
March 14th, 2020 at 12:42 PM ^
It's obviously a big deal but people are acting like the worlds ending.
4,000 deaths from it in the entire world isnt that much.
More people have died of bee stings in the last two weeks than covid 19
Bee stings: highly contagious.
Here’s your pompous jackass award. Congrats.
People like you ( Michigan Stan) are why this continues to get worse.
People like you are why there's panic buying at grocery stores. The world will not end and will be here next month and then next year, etc, etc, etc.
Nope not me. The people causing panic and the people buying into the panic are the ones causing it to spread.
Bunch of idiots flooding grocery stores standing shoulder to shoulder, packed to capacity, coughing and talking with each other
"OH NO THERE IS A CONTAGIOUS VIRUS I BETTER GO TO THE STORE AND CATCH IT!"
Im guessing youre part of the group of people Im talking about
I have to leave now but I want a dissenting opinion from my own. Tell me about this 'magnitude' of the situation. Why as a healthy 54 year old should I be concerned. I am concerned about my unhealthy Mother.
Don't viruses kill the weak throughout history? Survival of the fittest. Why should society hole up when it's just a vulnerable segment.
Please present a counterpoint. Anyone. Why is the flu, I mean the coronavirus, something that should shut down an entire society. I had a cold, I mean human respiratory syncytial virus, and I survived. I am sure others haven't survived.
See how I can attach a scary medical term over something that occurs on a regular basis. It seems like the fear is because we don't have a vaccine yet or it's extremely contagious but I catch colds and the flu from others and vice versa.
Present a case that I am in denial. That I don't get it. The best thing that has happened recently was Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson getting this virus because people see that they get better and are okay. It's the guy/gal with emphysema that we should be concerned about and isolate.
You don’t have to live in fear but you should not go about your life as if nothing has changed. There are a lot of unknowns and just because you are healthy doesn’t mean you can’t catch it and pass it on to many others.
You should be concerned because giving a shit about other people is what a decent person does. One of the goals is to contain the acceleration of new VC cases, to avoid our medical systems being completely overwhelmed and being unable to take care of the "normal" emergencies. If we're able to "flatten the curve" as they say, our doctors and hospitals can continue to stay above water.
Social Darwinism never goes out of style. Yeesh.
March 14th, 2020 at 11:34 PM ^
Wow. Good luck to you and your family and friends. Hope they don't all contract it.
BTW there is mounting evidence of permanent respiratory damage for those who contract but certainly that wouldn't bother you or yours.

Can pull out my Beta VCR tapes and enjoy watching Rick Leach's aerial barrage. After all, in 47 games he passed for 4,045 yards. And Bo still thought he aired it out too much.
March 14th, 2020 at 12:11 PM ^
You own a VCR? And a Betamax one, at that?
.....which unfortunately explains Bo's Rose Bowl record.
