Great Photos: The Way People Dressed Up For a Michigan Football Game in 1954
People got all dressed up for everything in the 1950s - including football games. Here are a bunch of incredibly cool photos of how people dressed for the Michigan-Minnesota game in 1954. It's also really interesting to see the way the outside areas of the stadium looked back then.
This is really, really cool. LINK.

Cool photos.
Something that is always fascinating is smoking and how common it used to be. I used to get sick on airplanes in early 80s from people smoking, and also remember playing with the ash trays on the arm rest.
I started working in offices full time in early 2000s and never experienced smoking in the office, but guys who worked in late 80s and early 90s talk about how design areas used to have tons of smoking in office which is weird.
Now, my kids will all grow up without ever specifying smoking or non smoking in a restaurant.
It's always something that amazes me how common it used to be and how much it has been expunged from society that now seeing someone smoke is almost jarring.

Even in hospitals, on wards and patient rooms. I remember going into doctor's lounges and it was heavy with smoke as late as mid 90's. They had clarion-like desks or cubicles to dictate operation reports or progress notes and the physicians on either side of you would be puffing away like chimneys.

The Nurses! I always looked for the smoking nurses......um well that's enough talk about this.......

You coulda just sat in the non-smoking section of the plane. Problem solved.
February 13th, 2020 at 11:31 AM ^
Smoking vs. non-smoking sections in enclosed, small areas was such a fucking joke.
February 13th, 2020 at 11:35 AM ^
Not just small and enclosed, but pressurized. Absolutely nowhere for the smoke (or germs) to go.

The Silverdome.
February 13th, 2020 at 11:42 AM ^
Yeah but back in the days we're talking about at least you could crack the window of the plane open just a little. Let some of the smoke out and take a little pressure off.

This is an urban myth. Airplane air is cycled through with fresh air about once every 2-3 minutes.

this had to be a '/s'. had to.

Agreed. The best sarcasm has no '/s' after it.

Last trip I was on that had smoking was early 90s international flight. Was a big plane and I did switch sections which amazingly helped.
Took a long time to not get sick on airplanes, even after smoking was banned though. Brain was triggered to correlate planes with throwing up. Fun times.
Must be genetic though, cause my grandpa picked up smoking for same reason when he was on the B17 bombers. Well that was reason he gave anyway. haha

Better yet, just crack open a window
February 13th, 2020 at 11:20 AM ^
For some reason, most airplanes still smell like cigarettes and coffee to me.

If you travel outside the US, especially to parts of Asia, people are still smoking everywhere and all the time.
I've been trying to quit (again) lately, mainly because you're treated like a leper if you're a smoker now. We should start treating obese people the same way as smokers. Make them ashamed of their addiction so they'll put down the cake.
February 13th, 2020 at 11:50 AM ^
Obesity has much more to do with four other C words.
Cash Crop Corn
February 13th, 2020 at 12:04 PM ^
..........Cash Crop Corn is only 3 C words
February 13th, 2020 at 12:08 PM ^
that's only three. WHAT'S THE FOURTH "C" word?!?!?!
February 13th, 2020 at 12:56 PM ^
high fructose (C)orn syrup.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:24 PM ^
Depends on you I guess.
I'm pretty average body type. My "C"ock makes me obese technically.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:40 PM ^
More like cookies, chips, cake and candy

so hatter is a leper. one of our favorites. there you have it.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:03 PM ^
Its always funny to go to China and watch people smoke in restaurants right underneath the no smoking sign.
I'll work on getting in shape and you keep working on quitting. Hopefully we both are doing good in a year.

Hey! My being fat doesn't cause secondhand fat
February 13th, 2020 at 12:13 PM ^
Sure it does. I see all that gorgeous cellulite and then I can't stop myself from ordering dessert.
Also the dangers of 2nd hand smoke have been drastically overstated.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:27 PM ^
Really? Well, as someone who has lost two loved ones to lung cancer and doesn't wish to be the third, you'll pardon me if I don't care to put that to the test.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:19 PM ^
To second that, as an ex-smoker, I know how hard that was to give up. Quitting good food makes quitting smoking seem like child's play. As I know how many calories I have to eat to lose weight given I've done it enough times, and I know what good and bad food tastes like, I've come to the conclusion that as long as I don't get any heavier than I am now, the food's worth it.
And I'll never understand people who exercise voluntarily. I've done it off and on, always hated every millisecond of it.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:17 PM ^
Not sure if serious. But going for another quick slice in case enacted.

Preach Hatter, preach!!! +1,000,000
On my last flight the fucking whale in the center seat next to me pushed me into the window for four hours. Their roll of lard was draped over the armrest and on top of my thigh and their elbow was in my gut the whole flight. Then he falls asleep on my shoulder.
The flight attendant and myself said something to them and all heck broke loose. Like we infringed on their Constitutional right to make others miserable around them because they make poor lifestyle choices.
Plus it's a safety hazard. If the plane needs to evacuate, how the heck is that person getting off the plane?
Neg away fatties... but you know I speak the (unpopular) truth!

I'm a good 20lbs overweight, but the size of some people now is just stunning. There are several people in my building that are 300+, and they're not 6ft tall either.
I'm pissing away 1k in Delta credits to upgrade to first class for a trip I'm taking to California just so I don't get stuck next to some ham planet for that long of a flight.
That said, the airlines need to make the fucking seats a little bigger. They're way smaller than they were in the 80's and the average ass is much wider.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:17 PM ^
Yeah, I'm not rocking the Borat sling bikini anymore but still.
I booked that flight the day of and there was one seat open on the whole plane.
Have fun on your trip and safe travels.

Thanks Stig. This is my first proper vacation in years. My best friend lives out there and he owns a fuckton of Tesla stock, so he basically hit the lottery last week. Trip is almost entirely on him.
Those years of my buying his drinks and getting him laid when he didn't have a pot to piss in are finally paying off!
February 13th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
That's funny, I bought some Telsa stock and got crucified for it by my peers... "Elon is an idiot", "Tesla sucks", "electric cars are just a fad".
I did it right after Elon had his meltdown on an investors call 2 years ago where he called the investment bankers idiots and stupid.
It's up 500% since then!

+1 for "ham planet"

I was in Bulgaria a few years ago and one of the guys with us asked for a non-smoking room. He then complained that it smelled like smoke. The clerk told him that it is only non-smoking because he is in it and he's not smoking. LOL
February 13th, 2020 at 11:59 AM ^
We had a smoking room at Huron High in the 70's. I also notice how much smoking there still is in movies.
Glad that has died down, but when we have a company meeting in Europe it is like going into the way back machine. Kind of surprised that socialist countries haven't tamped down on that given the impact on medical care.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:07 PM ^
I've been to Germany and Czech Republic and have seen more smokers in general, but not in buildings. I see a lot of smoking in Asia (China)
Crazy about High School. I think my dad said his high school in 60s it was only allowed for seniors.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:20 PM ^
Yes we did. I once organized a big toe exhibition in Huron's smoking room after an iron bed frame fell on my left one and it swelled to double size.
Of course, we also had the Friday afternoon wine drinkers' club in the woods by the athletic field. There you could indulge to your heart's content. Trying to remember the name of the varsity QB who used to join us. . .
When did you graduate? I graduated in 74.

I saw, like, one guy smoking in these pics.

February 13th, 2020 at 12:17 PM ^
So you just wanted to talk about smoking? I mean, that’s fine, I was just expecting to see a glut of photos of people smoking with that kind of build-up.
February 13th, 2020 at 1:02 PM ^
Yeah, just got me thinking about differences between then and now. Guy smoking in second row just stood out. Figured overall thread was just about the differences.
My only other thought from pictures was, man I'd be so hot and sweaty all the time wearing a suit, but figured that that really wasn't worth much of a comment. Not sure if smoking comment is that great either, but was maybe the lesser dumb of my two thoughts.

Most nowadays look down on smoking. Our society completely changed its views on it through educating the masses.
Think we should be using that approach more nowadays with things that are harmful to our health instead of fear tactics that we've used with other substances in the past.
February 13th, 2020 at 12:47 PM ^
Let's be real, fear tactics is a lot of what has been used against smoking, too. There's a fine line between fear and education.
