You're assuming it has a meaning. Interesting.
February 4th, 2020 at 9:26 PM ^
As a whole this is probably The 2019-2020 year is the worst year in Michigan sports history. Zero big ten championships and zero national championships so far with only 7 sports left I believe.

Oh, grasshopper. You forgot the 1931 season.

February 4th, 2020 at 9:36 PM ^
We’re here. And then we’re gone. In between, you get fucked. Sometimes that results in the continuation of the species. Others, in lost basketball games at home that make it a lot harder for your school to make a competition held at the end of the year. There’s also cake, but never as much as you want.

February 4th, 2020 at 9:39 PM ^
Heartbreak and humiliation at OSU’s hands. Don’t know what Michigan did to deserve it, but it is what it is at this point. The gods just seem to get some sadistic pleasure out of making Michigan suffer.

When you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So you got that goin’ for you, which is nice.

I guess you will not know for sure until you die. Given our luck it will probably just end up being the big empty!
February 4th, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
For sure, I certainly don't profess to know. I also appear to have significantly overestimated the number of people familiar with the immortal wisdom of Carl Spackler :)

Why is this OT?
February 4th, 2020 at 10:17 PM ^
You serious Clark? If you want my answer and I love to give it lol... The meaning of life could be a lot of different things.
1. Some people say it is doing what you love. Having some kind of calling or something that gives each day fulfillment. Probably a lot of Truth in it unless you're a workaholic in which case do whatever blows your hair back!
2. Some people think it's having good friends and family. Some people don't have that but I think it's important to try to find it somebody who's your family somebody who's your tribe...of course you have to realize this comes with a lot of responsibility especially if you have kids/wife...With this one you take the good you take the bad.
3. Some people just live from good time to Good Time. Whether it's partying or in bars ? this is fun for a while or at least it can be but if that's all you got I feel really bad for you sincerely! Some of that might depend on how old you are ?
4. Some people go with the ecclesiastical answer... To "fear God and obey his commandments for this is the whole purpose of man" I like this one a lot the older I get the main reason being that you don't have to be annoyingly religious to do this in fact the same guy who wrote in the same book that statement also said don't be too religious. If you're an atheist that's okay you can still have great ethics!
5. Some people will tell you life doesn't have any meaning or it may not ... In which case you have to assign meaning to it... This might be my favorite because it's not only arguably the most true out of everything said here so far but probably the most practical and useful. You have to find meaning and it's whatever you want it to be... You came into this world naked and you're going to leave it with nothing!!! You came into this world alone and you will leave it alone no matter what happens after you die! So really in a way the fact of the matter is it when people tell you life is not all about you... In a certain way that's entirely untrue! Your life is mainly about you and the choices that you make and whatever you value whatever gives your life meaning and pleasure and if you don't know what gives your life meaning it's up to you to find out!
If none of that helps see number 3 above until you figure something out ???
February 4th, 2020 at 11:41 PM ^
I like this.
Number 3 does reminds me of something - a couple years ago I was doing some consulting work for a client. They broke their customer base into various groups and gave them names. One of the groups was named "Happy Hedonists."
Being a happy hedonist - if you're happy, it's honestly not the worst way to go through life!

To crush your enemies, and hear the lamentations of their women.
February 4th, 2020 at 10:47 PM ^
Yes they're Lamentations are so sweet to my ears... What's even better is after you've conquered their Nation and destroyed all their men right in front of them... And then their women stop complaining about your sexual advances! When they do that that's when you know you've really crushed their souls and blotted out the memory of their warriors! It's also entirely possible that I've seen the movie Apocalypto one too many times!
February 5th, 2020 at 7:21 AM ^
To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. (Sorry back with my buds at college that was a line we often used!) I love the reference.

This entire athletic dept has no concept of how to win conference games that matter. The two revenue producing programs at UM cantbeat rivals no matter how bad they are. Watching basketball is now as hard or harder than watching the football team piss away big games.
Academic school, not athletic.

I suppose it'll have to be divided into two categories, considering who you're asking. A bare minimum definition of what qualifies as physical life, or the deeper purpose of humanity's spiritual existence, more specifically: what's the point of existing. Life could be basically defined as any reproducing organism. The purpose of our existence isn't too far removed from that basic definition: one single necessary fundamental fuel that delivers the best chance of our long term flourishment as a species is, quite obviously, love. The minimum qualifier of love is possibly more complex, but I'll define it as: demonstrating that you care about something more than you care about yourself. I consider that, it's boundless potential, and it's long term ramifications to be the "meaning of life. "

To learn that we can't do it right without God.
February 5th, 2020 at 8:25 AM ^
I do believe we are endowed with a sense of good and evil. And I am okay with defining this "sense" as "God". And here, pursuing this goodness may be used as "finding meaning". Otherwise, having been raised as a good little Mennonite, preacher's kid-really I was, I have slowly come to the realization that we, the Bible not withstanding, know nothing about said "God". And in the greatest sense of irony and paradox-coming to and accepting this reality has been the most freeing and meaningful realization I have experienced in my life. Claiming that we know anything about God would seem to be the most damning, delusional thing we can believe and coming to peace with knowing nothing about God is the most honorable position we can hold. Love your neighbor as yourself would seem to cover most everything.
