Speed in Space

I don't see major difference in "Scheme" (as in Shea ran these RPOs against MTSU)
What I do see if Speed in Space: As in for whatever reason (or in reality) Maryland slots are fast twitch. Where are Giles Jackson and Sainristil running this? Hope is DPJ can provide us with that fast twitch move on RPO and take it to the house.
Also, J Jackson has fast release and throws a laser confidently. Shea does that occasionally. I liked that wheel route but alas M missed it by inches.
Overall, I believe a lot of this is installation cost + mental errors. But Maryland is looking dangerous.
Hopefully we can look just as dangerous pretty soon here.

Gattis has that one circled on his calendar. National and local media are killing Gattis, but hopefully Gattis gets the last laugh...
September 9th, 2019 at 6:27 PM ^
They're not killing Gattis. They know it's Harbaughs offense
September 9th, 2019 at 6:35 PM ^
All indications are that it's not. I wish this narrative would die. It's based off of absolutely nothing.
September 9th, 2019 at 6:47 PM ^
If by absolutely nothing you mean watching the last four years of playcalling then yes, saying this still looks like Harbaugh's offense is based on absolutely nothing.
September 9th, 2019 at 7:59 PM ^
C'mon man, just stop. All off season we heard hype, but also people tempering that hype by saying "there will be growing pains." Well, we've seen great, good, so-so, and down right terrible. Sounds a lot like what happens when a new offensive system is installed, does it not?
This "who can be the most BPONE!" is a load of crap and people who participate in such ridiculous self-flagelation should be ashamed of themselves.
September 9th, 2019 at 8:19 PM ^
I feel like your bias is preventing your brain from processing what you are watching. Or something. I don't know. I'm just not sure what you're watching, because this is 100% not the Harbauffense. He probably pulled the reins a bit at halftime, but that's about it.
September 9th, 2019 at 8:54 PM ^
I'm doing a piss-poor job of communicating on this point so let me try one more time.
I get this an entirely new offense. New formations, new plays, new everything. I believe that the entire offense we are looking at now is Gattis's, not Harbaugh's.
What I do not believe is that Gattis has autonomy to call whatever he wants and I believe that in both games so far Harbaugh has had a heavy hand in the play selection in the second half. Both games we went into an offensive shell after halftime and that screams Harbaugh-not Gattis.
There is no "speed in space" I can see (look at Maryland, OSU or LSU if you want to see what it really looks like).
FWIW I remain optimistic on the season, not pessimistic regardless of who's calling the plays.
September 9th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
There just isn’t that much speed. I think one thing that is being lost is that our personnel is still very much man-ball. Even our receivers, very good players, but more range-y jump ball guys. DPJ was the worst possible guy to lose for this offensive install.
At this point, whatever. It is either going to work or it isn’t. I’ll be watching every Saturday either way because that is just what I do.
September 9th, 2019 at 11:48 PM ^
If DPJ makes or breaks this offense, Michigan has bigger problems.
September 10th, 2019 at 5:25 AM ^
You mean, losing the speediest in spaciest guy we have?
September 10th, 2019 at 2:58 PM ^
No. It means there are 100 guys on the roster and we're in year 5 of highly ranked recruiting classes. And if this 1 person makes or breaks the team, then there are problems elsewhere.
September 9th, 2019 at 9:21 PM ^
I am wait and see. There are a lot of reasons to be conservative early in the season w/ injuries.
September 9th, 2019 at 9:42 PM ^
Seems like a fair question.
I would think Harbaugh would have some say and probably should be able to add some plays based on his experience.
It’s Gattis’s offense and I would be surprised if Harbaugh just sat on it. Gattis said most/almost all of the plays are predicated on the read.
September 10th, 2019 at 2:02 AM ^
I do not understand what your basis is for deciding what plays Gattis would call if Harbaugh had no involvement. I don't mean that in a snarky way; I just literally, truly do not understand why you think you have any idea of what that would look like.
I'm sure it's not because he tweets #SpeedInSpace reguarly, because you are obviously intelligent and thoughtful enough to recognize that people routinely say things that aren't true, that a hashtag like that could just as easily be a recruiting slogan as it could a genuine mantra, and that even if he truly believes in that philosophy with his whole heart, it still doesn't mean he is capable of translating that to playcalling-- not being able or willing to perform tasks as well as we can verbally express how to execute those tasks is part of everyday life for virtually everyone.
The coach-cam tape shows that Harbaugh didn't have a play sheet in his hand during regulation, and gave no evidence of him arguing or vetoing or any any way getting involved with the play calling. What's more, getting conservative when under pressure is not an uncommon response at all, even for very intelligen people-- it's a reasonable survival instinct in many situations.
So far, all I know is that in 100% of the games that Gattis has ever called plays for at any level, when things were tight and the gameplan wasn't working, the adjustment was to become ultra conservative. That may be Harbaugh's MO, but I don't get why I wouldn't start out with the assumption that it appears to be Gattis' MO, too.
September 9th, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
Well, 3 years ago was pretty good for Michigan's offense. 78-0 Rutgers. Double overtime with Ohio St. But no one says that was a Harbaugh offense.
Maybe these offenses should be named after their coordinators: Fisch, Hamilton, Gattis, etc, etc.
September 9th, 2019 at 9:31 PM ^
3 years ago Fisch was on the offensive staff.
September 9th, 2019 at 9:42 PM ^
I really wish we could have kept Fisch and that offense. It was beautiful, powerful, and effective.
September 9th, 2019 at 7:48 PM ^
Disagree.
September 9th, 2019 at 8:10 PM ^
If it was still Jim's offense Gattis wouldn't be here. He'd be at Maryland.
He only came to Michigan because he was told it was HIS offense. Jim didn't have a play sheet to call plays.
Plays were there to be made. Shea over threw Bell, overthrew Nico, and WRs dropped passes that stopped drives.
THE PLAY CALLING ISN'T THE PROBLEM I guess is what I'm saying.
If Shea drops that Bell pass in, doesn't over throw Nico (or Black still unsure) in the EZ, and Metellus isn't called down by dumbass refs, this game is viewed VERY differently. Fumbles be damned. Executed properly Michigan wins possibly covering the spread. So stop trying to bitch about Gattis.
September 9th, 2019 at 8:21 PM ^
Shouldn’t lack of execution be on the coaches too? Hoke used to say the same shit and that’s his fault too.
September 9th, 2019 at 8:55 PM ^
I believe Brady kept saying that, not even realizing he was bashing his team by doing so.
September 9th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
Clappy said a lot of idiotic things. Primarily because he's an idiot.
How was our pad level? Did we have a great week of practice?
September 9th, 2019 at 8:35 PM ^
I don't know for sure if the offense is Gattis or Harbaugh. But I do know the failure to execute is on the QB, whether it is a talent issue or injury. He's simply not producing at a championship level.
September 9th, 2019 at 10:25 PM ^
But all those things you list DID happen.
September 9th, 2019 at 11:47 PM ^
Go check out ESPN. They're doing a whole story on all the D-1 offensive makeovers this year. What they say about Michigan is not flattering. PLUS, there is a whole Insider piece on Michigan's offensive struggles.
September 9th, 2019 at 7:54 PM ^
Hopefully
September 9th, 2019 at 5:52 PM ^
How long did it take Maryland? We didn't recruit Jackson? Why? He could be our QB? He gets it and can run this offense.
September 9th, 2019 at 6:25 PM ^
This is a fair point. Maryland has been running an up tempo system for a few years now. Sure they have a new coach but a much easier transition offensively.
September 9th, 2019 at 6:29 PM ^
To run the same offense they’ve run for 3 years?
did everyone forget what they looked like against Texas x2? Ohio state last year?
this is the same system with a non injured experienced quarterback
September 9th, 2019 at 7:22 PM ^
Truth.
This is what Durkin installed, basically continuing. It's not brand new.
September 9th, 2019 at 5:54 PM ^
Yeah but we were playing the 31st ranked team in the country (if you count the number of AP votes), not some tomato can like Maryland was playing
September 9th, 2019 at 6:23 PM ^
But I don’t understand why nothing seems to workout at Michigan. All we heard about was space all summer and instead we got smash mouth football out of the shotgun.
And why all of a sudden is Army up there with the elite teams in college football? I know they are a good team but we are acting like Michigan played Alabama.
September 9th, 2019 at 6:52 PM ^
Alabama would have been easier because they're still so emotionally distraught by the devastating hit they took from Hurricane Dorian.
#AlabamaStrong
September 9th, 2019 at 7:56 PM ^
I don’t understand why nothing seems to workout at Michigan.
Stop it, dude. Lots of things have "worked out" at Michigan. So many in here are so emo and fragile it's really pathetic.
September 10th, 2019 at 12:32 PM ^
If you define "nothing seems to work out at Michigan" as number of conference championships, I'd say nothing has worked out for 15 years or so. I hate to put words in peoples' mouths but I'm guessing he's thinking along these lines.
JEJ says we believe in football...championship football. Show me.
September 9th, 2019 at 6:26 PM ^
I don't know who Syracuse lost and who they had coming back for this year, but last year they went 10-3, beat WVU in the bowl game, played Clemson very close, and ended the season ranked #15. The Orange beat then #2 Clemson in 2017. That's not tomato can territory.
TBH, I thought our offense was going to look more like Maryland's than it has so far, but this sort of transition doesn't happen overnight. Josh Jackson looks perfect for the Terps.
September 9th, 2019 at 7:34 PM ^
Another thing to keep in mind regarding Syracuse is that defenses under Dino Babers are typically straight up ass. They won 10 games last year because of a dynamic offense. His other two years at Syracuse were 4-8 years. Here's what the defense has looked like under Dino:
2018 Syracuse: #60 S&P+
2017 Syracuse: #66 S&P+
2016 Syracuse: #84 S&P+
September 9th, 2019 at 8:31 PM ^
Defense under Babers may be RichRodian overall, but somehow they managed to hold Clemson to 27 points last year, the lowest point total of the season for Clemson.
September 9th, 2019 at 8:45 PM ^
It was Trevor Lawrence's first game and he got knocked out in the first half. And Clemson still scored 20 second half points with their former sixth-string QB.
September 9th, 2019 at 7:39 PM ^
I'm pretty sure that was Magnum's point (i.e., he was being sarcastic).
September 9th, 2019 at 7:50 PM ^
If only we had some connection to Josh, and could have had him transfer here.
September 9th, 2019 at 5:54 PM ^
Here's to hoping Michigan's speed in space achieves Ludicrous Speed on it's way to going plaid!
September 9th, 2019 at 7:04 PM ^
The best comment I saw from the plethora of threads Saturday read only this:
"#turnoversinspace"
The thread got nuked so I can't give appropriate credit.
September 9th, 2019 at 7:19 PM ^
You’re welcome ...... it was me
September 9th, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
If by "dangerous" you mean "well coached", yes, Maryland probably is. But there is no magic wand that is going to suddenly turn us into a well-coached team in two weeks. Harbaugh has been a head coach for 15 years. He is what he is.
September 9th, 2019 at 6:05 PM ^
Sure.
Mike Locksley Head Coaching Record
2009 New Mexico 1-11
2010 New Mexico 1-11
2011 New Mexico 0-4
2015 Maryland 1-5 (interim)
2019 Maryland 2-0

September 9th, 2019 at 6:55 PM ^
I'm impressed by Maryland, but if I'm crowning them, it's going on someone's head, thank you very much Coach Green.
September 9th, 2019 at 7:47 PM ^
Hey, did you hear Dennis Green died? At least we still have Keith Jackson.

The C stands for cunt, doesn't it?
