Yea disappointed in that as well. Blog hasn't been the same for a good year or so. But we really shouldn't be complaining. I mean, we don't pay for this...

I mean, we don't pay for this...
Of course we do. Our visitation drives the ad revenue. Mgoblog sells a portion of our attention. You absolutely have the right to complain.
One might even argue that we have a responsibility to communicate what we want out of the site if we want this community to thrive. That can surely be done respectfully. Nothing wrong with saying that you are disappointed in the disappearance of the transcripts.
August 13th, 2019 at 10:15 AM ^
You choose to come to a place that’s organized around a team. They give you a space to commiserate and converse. And you complain because they make money from a third party from putting this playground together for you?
You don’t like the see saw or the monkey bars, but you keep coming back expecting a rock wall. Meanwhile, nobody knows just how life and finances are going for the creators—we just want to complain that they aren’t living up to OUR expectations of what they should be providing us for free...
August 13th, 2019 at 10:56 AM ^
Literally not a single thing you're raging about is what he said at all.
August 13th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Especially regarding seesaws and monkey bars. There used to be rockwalls, was the OPs original point.
Brian and co. are going to do what they feel like doing--they've always made that clear. And we are (as clearly) in the dog days of summer. But there's no doubt that this place once possessed a lot more energy and character.
August 13th, 2019 at 10:58 AM ^
That's not quite the same. If every time I, and others, went to that playground the builder was making money, I would expect some improvements or at least the rides there to function correctly.
And if they started taking rides out, as is the case here, I would be a little disappointed.

What are you talking about? I buy the book and merch and I donate. And I'm not the only one. Just because you don't pay doesn't mean that nobody pays.
August 13th, 2019 at 4:06 AM ^
I mean... Okay, that's great for you, but it's not an obligation to donate in any way to use the site. I highly doubt anything close to the majority of users pay anything. Not to mention stuff like HTTV and any merch are paying for separate products.
There's absolutely nothing incorrect with the sentence "we don't pay anything to use the site." We get the site for free. Some, myself included, like it enough to pay for some other stuff that I’m sure helps out the blog.
August 13th, 2019 at 9:39 AM ^
It's a non-inclusive "we." I think there are a lot of us that contribute to the site; probably not a majority, though, you're right.
And the purchase of various products here supports the site beyond the actual product. At the least it supports the ability of the creators for this to be their full time job (right?).
Either way, you should consider paying for the content you value. The internet has given people the misconception that they can get valuable things for free. They then become monetized themselves through ads, which I frankly do not support. If more of us gave money to the site we wouldn't have to deal with the super intrusive ads here.

Agreed and this is not a complaint, but rather an observation. Lately I've been venturing over to 11W because they pretty much post UM content daily. But, the surprising observation I've had is that although MGB is older, 11W is quite a bit better as not only a functional website, but with the amount of content they post. They even post new front page content on weekends and holidays, which doesn't typically happen here. I wonder why that is? Is it as simple as OSU football has more wins, equals more fans, equals more traffic for 11W, equals more ad revenue, equals more money to pay writers? Heck, they even do internships. Just curious.
August 13th, 2019 at 10:11 AM ^
The blog posts content on weekends if there’s a game... otherwise Brian giving his team weekends and holidays as time off seems like a sign of a good employer.

I don't think it's as simple as that. Writing for a sports blog is not a traditional job that operates on a traditional schedule. Plus, writing could be done at any time. The posting of those articles seems like a different job from the writing of them, and that website work could be done on a different schedule without seemingly impacting the writing. And, a good employer will want whats best for the business and balance that with that's best for their employees. The business owner could also find people are willing to work during nights/weekends etc. It some ways it may be holding back the success and hence the earning potential of the employees by limiting themselves in that way. So, it doesn't seem as simple as "everyone take the weekends off for everything but game coverage."
August 13th, 2019 at 10:18 AM ^
Can't speak for 11W's content myself, but I definitely prefer the MgoBlog's mantra of quality over quantity. I am happy Brian & Co. don't subscribe to the Freep/ESPN/etc. model of publishing a daily (or more) article just for the clicks. I read enough mindless fluff articles, I definitely don't need more.
Besides, it's technically still the off season. Chill. No site garners more detailed analysis during the season than this site. It's unbelievable how much breakdown of the actual games in additional to the other content we get.
August 13th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^
Chill
Just an observation man, it's all good. I think some of us are too quick to shut down constructive criticism. It doesn't mean you don't appreciate the site here. Nothing ever improves without being willing to recognize areas for improvement.

Thats cool, but even content aside the website itself and functionality is quite a bit better. It still begs the question, why? Are you saying the content mongering gets more clicks and generates more ad revenue? Is it as simple as that? I just figured the best UM fan blog would be as good or better than OSUs, particularly if it's been around longer.
August 13th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
11W is a content farm. They post constantly because that particular fanbase values content over quality. Outside of Ramzy, they're student hacks throwing chum in the water.

I've enjoyed reading their content. Although I can't say the same for their posters, the writers also seem to be fairly level headed even in how they cover UM. And, they do things like Michigan Monday, Threat Level, etc. that covers analysis of UM. I think adding OSU specific regular front page content would be a popular addition to MGB.

I liked the bullet points. I think my ideal would be a bullet point summary with time stamps, then an accompanying video. I imagine transcribing is a pain in the butt.
August 13th, 2019 at 12:45 AM ^
I can't imagine transcribing one of Josh Gattis' pressers. I'd get carpal tunnel for sure.
August 13th, 2019 at 7:41 AM ^
That’s why there is voice-to-text software.
August 13th, 2019 at 12:45 AM ^
Didn't Seth link to an article where someone had basically noted everything Don Brown had said? Anyway, I can understand why people want it but I just prefer listening to them. Isiah Hole puts them all on YouTube.
I feel like it's a lot of work to transcribe it all when it's mostly fluff and available elsewhere.
August 13th, 2019 at 6:17 AM ^
In addition to IH posting the videos on YouTube, I believe Zach Shaw from 247 transcribes the press conferences as he was talking about it on the radio with Spath recently. Surely OP could link that to the board.
August 13th, 2019 at 11:30 AM ^
He's also posted no less than 8 "articles" based off of the Gattis interview.
- "Powerful" Onwenu in shape, impressing Gattis in fall camp
- Josh Gattis feels "fortunate" for heated right-tackle battle
- Led by McKeon and Eubanks, Gattis sees "all the pieces" at TE
- Two 2018 reserves, two freshmen standing out the most in WR room
- Per Gattis, running back is Michigan's "deepest position"
- "Lights out" Shea Patterson leading Wolverines in fall camp
- Josh Gattis discusses offensive depth one week into fall camp
- Josh Gattis quotes from this week
I agree content has been a bit slow around here but is this really what you guys would prefer? 8 articles from a single press conference? This place is so much better than every other free M site by a mile.

Believe Adam was writing them as of spring. Not sure who will be covering them this fall but this is usually the week(s) where Brian and Co are preparing a ton of content for the week leading up to game one. It may just not be a priority. If you read the threads when the interviews are posted (usually well before the front page posts) there is a video supplied and often intrepid fellow posters will summarize key details.

Yeah I guess my expectation was that once people were hired and the site was rebuilt it would become an even more legit "news & info" site, but it feels like it produces less now than ever. Granted, the submarine being what it is, there's not a whole lot to rehash every day, but I hardly bother with the front page anymore except a passing glance. Not complaining, just my observation.
Really if anything happens it's going to hit the board first, so that's mostly what I come for, but even that's mostly a bitch-fest and troll farm anymore.
My F5 doesn't get the workout it used to, that's for sure.

The front page has been regurgitated 2019 Recruiting.
August 13th, 2019 at 8:20 AM ^
That regurgitation has been a feature since I've been here. Not long, granted, but I suspect its been that way for decades. I enjoy the recaps because it gets me re-familiarized with the new guys I wouldn't otherwise recognize from last years signing day.
August 13th, 2019 at 8:28 AM ^
2009 was the earliest I could find, but yeah, every single summer since then.
August 13th, 2019 at 8:53 AM ^
Yeah, and that feature is one of the ones I personally look forward to most every year. Gets me excited for the season, and helps me know which names to listen for and which ones to file away for a couple of years.
These profiles also have long-term use in that they’re linked to the depth chart pages, so you can get a refresher when there’s someone who is a RS sophomore and hasn’t yet seen the field: Was that something we expected when he showed up to campus, or is that a disappointment?
I do miss Heiko’s press conferences, not just the transcriptions but also his insightful questions. I do hope they have someone in that role again in the future, but it’s something I need during the season, and not in early August. The “what we want to hear/what we’re hearing” bits of information posts from Seth fill that void right now.
August 13th, 2019 at 9:37 AM ^
I didn't say it was a negative feature...I like the recruiting features. It just seems like it has been one of the main features every time I visit the front page.
August 13th, 2019 at 12:01 PM ^
With 25 profiles to write during an ideally slow news period (Beilein’s surprise departure messed that schedule up a bit), you probably are going to see them frequently when you go to the front page, because they’re a high percentage of the content.
One thing I like about this site is that they don’t typically post “stories” based around one quote or rumor. Yeah, that can make summer feel boring, and for those who love analyzing every rumor I can understand feeling like the front page isn’t living up to some ideal — but that’s not their ideal. You get 1-2 of those posts a week in unverified veracity, but Brian et al don’t make too much of their trade in analyzing gossip. And I’m happy to think sometimes, especially on a niche website like this one, that no news simply means there is no news.

I hear 11 Warriors covers Michigan football more than mgoblog does.
August 13th, 2019 at 7:23 AM ^
Is this everyone's 1st season with the blog or something? There is always a bit of a lull 2-3 weeks before the season which is followed by massive content the week before and full coverage during the season. The recruiting series being the bridge is not new either. It goes back to at least 2013.
August 13th, 2019 at 7:57 AM ^
As far as I know, they've always done pressers, especially the first one of camp. Seth seems to have replaced them with camp highlights that distill the info from the pressers plus some insider stuff sprinkled in.
I think it's fair to say the blog is a bit lighter on content than years past. They scaled stuff back when Ace had to leave and never really replaced a lot of features.

I was just thinking when I logged on this morning that the activity, minus the board, seems to be non existent lately. Considering it’s almost time to kick the ball it’s unusual.
August 13th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
If I had to guess it's because it's content you can find a bunch of different places. I never read the transcripts often, tbh. Coach press conferences rarely give you any useful information, and on the occasion that they do, everyone is talking about it.
