Overtime by John U. Bacon - New Book on Michigan Football
It will be out September 3rd. As usual, it looks like a good read. Here's a link to an article about the book, and here's a quote from the article.
Though the end of the season was a disappointment, with two consecutive blowout losses after building towards such promise, the end of the book has quite the opposite feel, thanks to Bacon’s deft hand. We come to realize that, four years into Jim Harbaugh’s tenure helming the team, we’re still at the beginning. Bacon’s assumed final entry on the Wolverines football program may be called Overtime, thus signaling a nearing end, but given the constraints in which Michigan and Harbaugh are limited, we come to understand why the program is, indeed, on the right track. When the Wolverines return to the top of the pyramid – and Bacon makes a compelling case through the vignettes why the team is trending in that direction – fans will appreciate how those in leadership, from Harbaugh to those now wearing a winged helmet, haven’t cut corners or sacrificed integrity like many others in the NCAA.
article ends with: Harbaugh to those now wearing a winged helmet, haven’t cut corners or sacrificed integrity like many others in the NCAA.
waiting for our one ardent poster to assure us that, despite all other appearances (and this write-up), michigan is cheating!!!
very glad we are largely keeping above the SEC/ohio dirt fray. will take that 100 times out of 100 despite some tough losses.
and lastly, i never want us to cheat, but if we are we sure as heck better be the 'leaders and best' at that, too. don't give me any business about some other school having a bigger money cannon.
I take integrity 100/100 times, as well. Nothing infuriates me more than hearing posters on this board advocate for a Michigan 'bagman', and imploring our fine university to join the legion of cheaters. The scandal of the Steve Fisher era caused me to become basically a non-observer of the basketball program for nearly a decade. Winning is not everything... especially in college athletics!
Different era. NCAA rules are basically just suggestions now.

I am proud that I am a grad of Michigan and that we have integrity. Harbaugh is a great representative of the University as are others associated with the the university. The academic and college athletic worlds would be much better if others would follow the standard we set.

Would you be so proud as to not support Michigan football if they had an impermissible benefits scandal but won a national title?
August 6th, 2019 at 10:43 PM ^
would not support. would be bummed. could happen, too. not so naive to think its not possible but if michigan is doing stuff wrong it is comparing small arms fire (michigan) with tactical nukes (SEC/ohio, etc).

You voted for Donald Trump.
You have black children and you voted for a white supremacist.
Every time I unfortunately read your posts it makes my skin crawl to be reminded someone from the 'Send her back' crowd has black children in their possession.
Stop fucking posting on a Michigan board asshole.

Cmon man what’s wrong with you?
No politics is a pretty big rule here so you just decide to shit right on the kitchen table.
In fact you have a consistent history of political rants. Enjoy Bolivia.

Rodriguesqe seems to come on mgoblog once a month to stalk extramelanin and harass him for voting for Trump. Very strange. It’s as if about half of the country didn’t agree with extramelanin.
August 7th, 2019 at 11:35 AM ^
Actually, 26 percent of eligible voters went for Trump. But Rodrioguesqe is crazy out of line. And it doesn't please me that the mods are out to lunch here. XMelanin is a good-natured and generous poster here and--like all of us--his vote and right to it are sacred.

"Possession"?
Hardly the word I'd use when referring to a family (especially XM and his family); to a loving dad and the children he and his wife adopted and are raising (and rather well, in my eyes) as a part of their family.
Maybe instead it's you who needs a timeout from posting here. Spend that time addressing your own anger issues rather than passing judgement on and insulting someone you obviously don't know.

Knew i didnt like that guy
Sheesh, man. I am as polar opposite XM politically as anyone on the board. When political threads get going, we get on each other's cases a good bit. But what happens in those threads stays in those threads. I like XM's contributions to this board and agree with him on virtually everything non-political. It's an angry time in the country, but this is somewhere you can go to step away from it unless that's what the thread is about.
That's not what this one is about.
This is an internet message forum.
If you can't let things go, you're going to have a stroke.
Co-signed. I hate Trump. But XM is definitely not the problem here. Especially when his post was in no way political.
Rodriguesqe, I logged back in to upvote you! Some truths are bigger than silly sports arguments!
We're all maize and blue here. You're the one violating board rules (while also coming off as an intolerant bigot), so maybe you should be the one who leaves?

It’s amazing to me that somehow calling out people who vote for a man calling minorities “infestations and rats” is now labeled as being bigoted.
Like how fucked in the head are right wingers in this country?
It’s like you can shit on minorities all day but god forbid you call out people (particularly white people) or stereotype them back (for shooting up every public venue possible) for their nonsense all hell breaks loose among conservative circles. Welcome to being judged like the rest of us you golden spoon fed babies.
August 7th, 2019 at 12:35 PM ^
Pretty sure he meant actual infestations of rats.....You really have to be looking to use the "R" word there to think otherwise.
My wife isn't white and I have interracial kids, so please tell me what I believe and stand for. Thanks. You're polluting the board with this crap. It's exhausting.
Idgaf what your wife is. The point is calling out Trump supporters for supporting a candidate who blatantly dehumanizes non-white people is NOT bigoted.
Why don't you go look up the definition of the word and then take a long look in the mirror?
August 8th, 2019 at 10:08 AM ^
Today I learned calling out ppl who who don’t care about suspect rhetoric is the equivalent of the person saying said rhetoric.
I’m sure you chime in with your “all sides are equal” bs when anti-semites or sympathizers espouse their views too.
Decided to look at your posting history. I'm not interested in a back and forth with a cliche millennial keyboard warrior that uses this forum to attack and insult other posters. My comment about taking a long hard look in the mirror still stands. Good luck with your rants.
You're kind of a dumbass aren't you?
August 7th, 2019 at 10:42 AM ^
you trying for a record for most thumbs down . can't think of any other reason for such an inane post
But didn't we? Fab five?

Unless you are practicing an extra 15 minutes or received a free bagel and cream cheese!
August 7th, 2019 at 10:30 AM ^
Being on Keto, it makes me sad to think about delicious bagels with a veg cream cheese spread... ummmm
It's easy to say you'd take integrity and losses over shadiness and wins when that decision has been made for you to be the former. I have a strong feeling that if shadiness was the route Michigan took then damned near every fan would be celebrating the wins and making excuses for the shadiness just as so many other fanbases have done when their programs ran into some trouble.
you may be correct. however, i am not the only one on this board who has an occupation that requires those choices on an individual basis and daily frequency. i know my default position. second, even accepting your cynical response i would nevertheless hope that michigan fans would end up near the top of the pile of the mythical 'given the choice what would you choose' fan poll.
Imagine not liking someone because their political views differ from yours. Loser.
Are we pretending as though not liking somebody because their political views is always bad now?
I have no problem saying that I don't like David Duke because his political views. Does that make me a loser or a bad person?
Perhaps I should have been more specific. I was thinking more along the lines of a random message board poster, family members, co-workers, etc....that sort of thing.
Regardless, I will take integrity. We are here to learn and enjoy the moment. Cheating doesn't bring much to the table.
August 6th, 2019 at 11:04 PM ^
Why do you say stupid shit?
UofM and their fanbase disavowed the greatest Bsktball recruiting goldmine of all time (BAGGY PANTS!) just because some guy with no affiliation to the program knew Chris Webber was heading to the NBA.
I mean, Mateen Please.
That guy seems like a huge prick.
I'm 100% on board with everything you said in that post, XM.
Someday soon the college football world might finally have its first clean championship team of the playoff era. And when it does happen we'll be as proud of that as we will be of the Championship Trophy.
August 6th, 2019 at 10:13 PM ^
You think Oklahoma is a dirty team? I would disagree unless you have proof.....
Edit: either you changed your wording or I misread what you wrote. I thought you said college football will have its first clean playoff team.
above the SEC/ohio dirt fray
Correction: SEC/B1G East fray.
It’s written by John bacon so it’s perfect

Fat finger phone post.
August 7th, 2019 at 12:42 AM ^
I love me some Bacon!
We should be paying recruits, no one is harmed if a bag man drops off $10,000 for a 4* that Don Brown needs to play corner for example. We absolutely should never allow players to be above the law.
Broken windows.
August 7th, 2019 at 11:50 AM ^
Hell yea.
Winning with integrity - that is a worthy pursuit. Hoping for some sports justice this year. Go blue!
Bacon isn’t an impartial reporter. He’s a Michigan hagiographer.
And the best one, at that
Do you think John U. Bacon would compromise journalistic integrity by proclaiming loudly that Michigan is running a clean program if he had evidence that it wasn't? In the intrest of his credibility, he would have stayed away from the subject altogether, instead of making a declaration that Michigan is clean.
