Iggy killing it right now in Summer League
In 14 minutes in the first half, Iggy has 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists on 6-7 shooting and 2-2 from 3
Iggy is an ANIMAL. A shame we sorta wasted his potential and didn't win a banner the one year he was here. He's probably the only guy that showed up against MSU x3 and TTU this year.
Starting to think our offense shouldn't have sucked last season
Fire Beilein!
Beilein wasn't into it. It does not take away what he did here or how great of a coach he was/is, but he was asleep at the wheel for the second half of last season. For the first time I can remember he was feigning interest at press-conferences and had no counters ready offensively. He had very little interest in developing younger players. He was checked out.
A couple of things here, I guarantee the teams they struggled with offensively played a little bit better defense than the Suns did,(no zones in the NBA) and I bet Iggy isn't expending himself as much defensively as he did at UM, which would hurt him offensively, and let's be honest, Iggy sometimes just disappeared in the second half of games.
You are claiming that NBA defense is not as good as some college teams because they can't play zone. They can play zone. Teams don't do it much because they have a 3 second rule which makes it more complicated and the players are way better and get a lot of open shots. You can't give any NBA guard/forward any space. Then you claim that Iggy while playing for a chance to make the Knicks roster and fulfill his dream and possibly line himself up to make tens of millions would decide to be lazy on defense. That's illogical and an insult. I can't believe people still repeat this garbage. Ask Jimmer Fredette if the NBA plays defense.
Dude you are commenting and obviously didn't watch the game. It looked like an all star game. Go look at some highlights and tell me those guys played the same kind of defense MSU, and Texas Tech played.
Eh, that actually looks pretty much like regular NBA defense.
I didn't watch the game but I had seen some of the highlights. I still don't think you can watch that and say Iggy didn't exert himself on defense and I do think this defense is better than MSU or Texas Tech. Defense doesn't look great when offensive players are extremely athletic and you can't double the good players like you can on a college team. It's just a different game played at a different pace. The defense isn't sophisticated but it's still hard to get by these guys. If the defense was so bad, why didn't RJ Barret score 30+?
That is not what I said. Dude this is summer league basketball. 90% of these guys will not be on NBA rosters next year, and that was not good defense. Their was no help defense, and they were throwing alley oops, like they were giving out candy. Iggy's defensive intensity was nothing like it was in a B1G game. I don't think I would ever say he was a plus defender to begin with, but that was not a good defensive game, but it was typical of NBA summer league play, but you didn't watch it, so why would you defend it?
There are clear, objective, sacred cow reasons that it did.
I am optimistic that Howard will bring some fresh air to this season and program-and beyond. I saw an interview with his son, I believe it was Jace-bright, bright, articulate young man. Juwan should put his kid on staff as the lead recruiter-he might be the de facto lead recruiter already. I do believe Juwan is going to change the recruiting game significantly-in Michigan's favor.
Jesus - we can't start acting like we upgraded at coach. Howard will likely do a fine job and I'm behind his hire but we had John F'ing Beilein.
Oh, we most definitely can!
We acted like Don Brown has never heard of zone defense. We acted like we knew who Erik Bakich should start in Game 2 of the CWS Final despite watching 4 Michigan Baseball games in our lifetime. We act like Jim Harbaugh doesn't understand football offense. We act like Warde Manuel has never hired, fired or extended a coach before.
We can most definitely shit on John Beilein. It's what we do.
Wait, who downvoted this? Im drinking the kool aid on Juwan. Hoping the jump in recruiting negates his lack of seasoning. If Michigan could mix the Gary Grant to Luis Bulllock years level recruiting with Coach B in game coaching and player development watch out!
The problem our offense had last year was 3/5 of the starting lineup wasn’t a consistent outside shot threat. Really hard to run an effective offense that way. If we are lucky we can get it down 1.5/5 this year if teske gets more consistent.
Our fan base has been spoiled by Beilein offenses for many years. As you said, this year's team didn't have the outside shooting that other teams have had. Teske hit a few outside shots, but not consistently. Xavier made his hook shot an amazing asset, but didn't have the outside shot to kill teams who disrespected it. Matthews didn't have a great outside shot. Poole had spurts but very little consistency.
The TT game the team went 0-18 on their first 18 threes (or something like that). Not a lot you can do as a coach when your team just gets that cold. They still played excellent ball and almost got the hardware. I don't think we need to harp on the team or Beilein who did much better than anyone originally expected of them.
Our starting PG and one of our starting wings couldn't shoot from deep. It doesn't help when your two main guys that handle the ball aren't a shooting threat.
Iggy peaked with the team early on. He disappeared vs. MSU and NCAA's for the most part. Or is your post blue comedy?
Disappeared against Sparty?! I don't recall that..unless by disappear you mean foul out bullshit-ily
He ended the half with a monster baseline dunk. Drove right and hammered it.
Meanwhile....Duncan Robinson struggled from the three-line and had to settle for a double-double the old fashioned way..in the paint. The 15 extra pounds of muscle he has put on this off season...is helping his numbers.
I was reading a live game thread from the Knicks last game. Iggy missed a couple shots and minutes into his first NBA game some Knicks fans were already ganging up on him saying he wasn't good enough for the NBA.
Knicks fans wonder why no bigtime Free agents want to come there
A rude New Yorker? Well, if you say so . . .
FAKE NEWS, FAKE NEWS!!!
/no politics
Knicks fans wonder why no bigtime Free agents want to come there
That might have more to do with James Dolan's ineptitude than with anything their fans say. It's not the Knicks' fans that make them such a dysfunctional franchise that marquee players avoid like the plague. It's their management. If you can't tune out the fans, you don't belong at that level.
Thank you. Knicks fans are actually some of the best considering they still support the team despite all the dumb shit Dolan does. Knicks fans LOVE their players - especially the old school guys. Fan support/NY attitude isn't the problem, DOlan is. The Knicks have shipped out a number of fan favorites over the last years, Porzingis being chief among them. And the fans still put up with it.
I really didn't think he was good enough to go early and I was dismayed when the Knicks picked him. But, it could work out - if Iggy can produce, he could be the type of player Knicks fans love (then he'll be traded).
Also - RJ Barrett had another bad game, he's looking like he might suck. Hopefully its just rookie/offseason rust.
Barrett had the same 3pt percentage last year (30.8%) that Zavier Simpson did. I wonder about him in the 3-centric NBA.
Not a Knicks fan or even a knowledgeable basketball guy. But it does seem if Iggy works out, it will be as a particular role player & not due to any raw athleticism.
Basically, in a league with super quick athletes, maybe there’s a role for him as a total counter move & using his muscle/bruising style. Basically the basketball equivalent of running a fullback when all the defenses are set up for speed in space. Or the basketball equivalent of a hockey enforcer.
And if he works out, I could definitely see him becoming a Knicks fan favorite. He’s always relished the role of bully/villain.
He absolutely could come off the bench to grind down, hack away, and otherwise beat up on some teams while scoring maybe 6-10 per night as a rotation guy.
The big value add wouldn't be the points. It’d be the nasty streak & style of play. As the starters rest up, the other team is getting bludgeoned by Iggy.
“Oh shit...THAT guy again.....”
I was in Vegas and watched that whole game and he did look a step slow out there and like he was an average to below average summer league player.
Its nice to see him have a bounce back game but same as it was at Michigan he’s going to need to learn to be more consistent game to game.
Us Knicks fans know why no one wants to play here. It’s because the Knicks have an incorrigible pigcunt of an owner. It’s also because we continue to buy tickets even though the Knicks have suffered through 20 straight seasons of bloody diarrhea. Why would ownership make changes if they’re making ridiculous coin with abortions for rosters year after year?
Knicks' Fans are like, well lions' fans.
Pigcunt? You're referring to James Dolan? But he's a prince of a man. His warmth and courtesy to Charles Oakley stands a example to us all in these heartless and cynical times.
I grade this an A+ for imaginative use of adjectives.
Good times.
Fans can be fickle assholes. Especially NY fans. You're only as good as your last win, and that is magnified x10 by the NY fans and NY media.
But this happens everywhere to a certain extent. Its part of the game. If you can't handle criticism from the fans, you have no business being a professional athlete. Not saying Iggy can't handle it, just making a general statement. Fans harping over your abilities to win games comes with the job description.
All of the all-time greats have had to deal with that in some form or another. I'm sure Yankee fans even ripped on Jeter more than once, and he's probably the one of the most beloved NY athlete of the last several decades. If not the most beloved. So if Jeter had to put up with it, if LeBron has to, if Brady has to, that means everyone will have to as well.
Knicks fans now in love with Iggy calling him their real #3 pick while trashing RJ. lol
Iggy has played well tonight
RJ Barrett has not
What does it mean?
Nothing major.
Iggy is keeping the Knicks in this. He has 27. They're running every possession exclusively to him now.
TIES IT FROM DOWNTOWN!!!
He’s got like 5 turnovers, but Barrett has had 8. Sloppy game overall.
Iggy seems notably better at drive & dish/kick out too.
Barrett "has had"? He simply "has". Stop writing like an MSU grad.
Two responses to this:
- When I wrote the comment the game was ongoing. Thus, the usage of the present perfect tense was appropriate. Here is a translated version to satisfy your snobbish sensibility:
[Written in third person simple present tense as I type the scentence essentially concurrently with an exciting game development]
(He) (implied Ignas Brazdeikis--one of the established topics of the thread) TIES IT (implied as the score of the basketball game--one of the established the topics of the thread) FROM DOWNTOWN (a basketball colloquialism meaning a made field goal worth 3 points because the player releases the ball from behind the designated 3 point line)!!!!!!
**Then, written approximately 30 seconds later, after reflecting upon the recent past developments of the ongoing game I was currently watching**
[Written in present perfect tense to reflect recently past developments that also extend to the present tense]
He's (implied Ignas Brazdeikis--one of the established topics of the thread; contraction between "he" and "has") got ("has got" being a commonly used present perfect tense idiom that is actually simple present tense) like (commonly used idiom to mean "approximately") 5 turnovers, but Barrett has had 8. (My current opinion is that this has been a) (implied fraction of a sentence that most intelligent readers can follow) Sloppy game overall.
Iggy seems notably better at drive & dish/kick-outs too.
- It's a damned internet sports discussion board. I was typing quickly on my phone in an informal manner. Get over it.
This is an amazing clap back to the pedant lol
And Duncan posted a double double (20 points and 10 rebounds) for the Heat today. One of the truly great development stories.
RJ is 3-for-15 from the field and 8 turnovers, with Flava Flav standing behind the Knicks bench. "Don't believe the hype" is right.
Just finished the game with 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists on 11-19 shooting and 3-6 from 3
Outplayed RJ Barrett by a mile
"Iggy is more impressive than RJ. Give Iggy minutes this season send RJ to the GLeague" - from a Knicks forum
I found myself often expecting more from Iggy. He was a tough hard working player for the season he was in Ann Arbor. I just have a hard time seeing him compete with the athleticism in the NBA. Let's see how he is doing next January. I hope my skepticism is shown to be unfounded.
Personally I think he was arguably (along with X) the most consistent player during his one year here. I remember a stretch where he had 10 or more points for like 15 games in a row. There were rarely any games this year he didn't have 10 points.
I think as a freshman he wasn't supposed to contribute as much as he did but he did it anyway. I do share the same skepticism though. Hope he proves us wrong
