Charles Matthews has apparently torn his ACL and is expected to miss next season.

Hopefully he'll still get a shot and recovers as quickly as possible.
Terrible, terrible news...
Oh no. Really bad news. Hope he heals well and gets a shot next year.
That's awful. Hopefully he can recover and get back to playing. I really thought he had a chance to sneak into the second round this year.
Beat me to it. Guess mine should be deleted.
Unbelievable. Kid was so close
Feel bad that he didn’t leave after 2018. Nothing that happened this year helped his stock at all. It really was just kind of a waste of a year for his development. And who knows how playing through an injury this passed year may have contributed to this more serious injury. Too bad all around.
Really irritating post. You have no idea how he might have developed or enjoyed this past season, but so quickly define it as a waste. SMH.
I just think a lot of people are really quick to irritate. We live in the “day of outrage.” My post was pretty benign. Sorry it got you bent out of shape.
There wasn't any outrage there... Did he say he was outraged? No one knows what might have happened if he went pro a year earlier, but he made a choice and it's a bummer he's hurt now.
I think we live more in the age of knee-jerk reaction. He was injured, that's all. Doesn't mean anything could have been done, doesn't mean he should have done something different last year.
Don’t be irritating and people won’t be irritated. As for “outrage culture,” that’s the deflection of people who cannot handle the public shit they get for stating stupid shit. The only difference in 2019 is that more people have the chance to literally tell people off in slightly anonymous ways from when prior to the 2000s all one could do is whisper criticism under his or her breath or behind one’s back to other folks.
No, it is really just more of an outrage culture. I think that, in retrospect, Matthews was in better position to get drafted at a respectable position in 2018 than in 2019, and that 2019 was a pretty disappointing, injury ridden season for him, and I think that is unfortunate. If this outrageous, irritating position bothers a few, you are going to have to deal with it.
No one would have been surprised had he left after only 1 year, but I think he's one of the few people who listened to the NBA people (and, probably the UM staff) and decided that an outside shot at round 2 wasn't worth leaving. Instead he came back and got his degree. He did deal with injury, but it's hard to tell if he didn't improve at all. He certainly improved his free throw shooting. There were times where is seemed the light came on, and he realized that getting into the lane and shooting over less athletic defenders was his best shot. Being 22 and having a degree, he really had no other choice to declare this year. The injury is certainly unfortunate. I'd say Charles Matthews is a great example of a Division 1 player doing everything right.
My only outrage is you used passed instead of past. SMH
Well, (at least) one thing happened this year -- he got his degree. Had he left last year he might've still torn his ACL.
The career of an athlete is a tough way to go. I hope he makes some money.
Awful news, and here's hoping to a full and speedy recovery. I was really hoping to see him land somewhere this coming season, even in an off-the-bench capacity.
Very sad to hear the news!
Given timing (and our scholarship situation), I wonder if he can withdraw from the draft and stay "on the team" for rehab in Ann Arbor and, potentially, for some PT later in the season. Would be great to have him around...almost like a football GA.
Recognize the May 29th deadline has passed but stranger exceptions have been made.
I'll be back in the stands again tonight at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Huge game.
GO BLUE!!!
He has an agent, that used to mean he can't come back. Not sure if still the rule.
Its not.
It is and isn't. If you hired an agent and severed ties with the agent by 29 May you can return to school. He did not sever ties by 29 May so he cannot return to school.
That is the most unfortunate. The worst possible scenario for him. Hope he has a speedy recovery.
Fuck that's horrible. Hope he heals soon.
That fucking sucks, but I think he'll be in the league next year. Wishing him a speed recovery.
Awful news and very likely unfortunate timing for Charles. I was really hoping he'd be drafted as I had read several days ago that he was looking impressive in workouts.
Best wishes for a speedy and COMPLETE recovery.
That fucking sucks.
At a draft workout trying to impress scouts, one of the worst possible things happen. Hope a squad can take a flyer on him with a two-way contract and let him rehab next season.
Crappity, crappity, crap. Feel bad for Charles. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. What an awesome UM ambassador he is.
Fuck, poor dude.
This is really unfortunate. It just sucks. Like others, I thought he had a chance to make an NBA team or at least have a two-way contract. Hopefully he can make it back next year.
Speaking of making it back, is there any chance he still has health insurance through U of M? I don't see how he'd have any coverage through the NBA right now, but I'd love to be wrong about that if he also doesn't have Michigan-based coverage.
This is really sad news. I hope that he heals and comes back better!
Oh man, super bummer. Wish the best for that young man and his recovery.
That sucks. Wish him luck on his recovery
Quality young man. High character. He will be a success in life.
That is a huge blow for Matthews. I feel so bad for him. He's a hard worker and a leader for a good team. From what I've heard, he is having a strong workout for several NBA teams and locked up a lot of players to the point where players refused to be in the same workout as him in fear of him making them look bad.
Horrible! Absolutely horrible. I feel really bad for the kid, he worked his ass off for Michigan and gave everything he had. With a big smile for it all, too! I hope he gets it back next year. Damn...
That sucks. Good thing he got that UM degree and has the network. Need to support his launch in life if his football is done.
.....uh
There has to be a paid position somewhere within our bball program or A.D. that he would great at while he rehabs.
He was recruited twice and is a smart thoughtful guy so must have lots of insight from a recent modern recruits perspective and could be a help to the new NBA coaches in understanding and relating to recruits and would be a great help for the new coaches in understanding and dealing with his now ex teammates!
He would still be an incredibly valuable leader, resource, friend, comfort & support for the team, and a bridge to the Beilein ways & facilitator for transitions to new ways.
He's had to acclimate to a college twice and would be a relatable advisor or whatever in helping frosh or transfer athletes transition to college & to M. & doing it as an athlete.
Probably plenty of things he could do.
Wouldn't he have some sort of insurance for this?
And since this was a draft workout for a team, maybe the Celtics has some liability insurance as well?
We love you Chuck. Beat this and make it to the Assosciation.
Terrible.
Hang tough Charles.
Sucks. I have to think this will be career ending for him. He was already a borderline prospect before the injury. It'll require a herculean effort to get to the NBA after this.
This is too bad.
Feel really bad. He's a great kid and one of the best defenders I've seen.
That sux. Terrible. Hope for a speedy recovery.
Dear NCAA,
Stop pretending you're protecting amateurism and let players get paid.
Signed,
Charles Matthews' ACL
Amen to that (not that the NCAA cares)
That just really sucks. I hope he had one of those insurance policies like Jake Butt did.
Man, that's awful news. Wishing him a full & speedy recovery.
