Video of Wimbush throwing at recent ND practice
I saw this video posted on the UHND forum:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2bnlEPKQKA
There are a few clips of Wimbush looking very erratic on short passes. Maybe he just had a bad day, or maybe he has some Knoblauch-type issues with the short ball.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:41 PM ^
Bad day or not, he'll certainly be having a bad day on 9/1 against Don Brown and the Boys!!!
August 13th, 2018 at 5:27 PM ^
That's not even a joke. A QB who's that erratic is a perfect matchup for Winovitch/Gary/Bush/Hudson/Hill/Long.
Whoa that's a lot of playmakers.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:33 PM ^
As a human being, I genuinely feel bad for opposing quarterbacks :D
August 13th, 2018 at 6:32 PM ^
I think last year's defense holds the unofficial season record for most quarterbacks knocked out of a game. Felt damn close to 100%
August 13th, 2018 at 9:54 PM ^
The sad thing is UM's online was probably a close second in that category last year.
August 13th, 2018 at 11:58 PM ^
2006 vs Penn St alone has that unofficial record
August 13th, 2018 at 7:13 PM ^
Just like Florida last year, whoever they had couldnt throw worth a shit, and that ended poorly. I see similiar with ND qb

*dudes
August 13th, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
ND is going to have a lot of trouble moving the ball on our defense. Especially if its the freshman QB that starts. Run the ball? Good luck with our front 7. Pass? Good luck with the pressure and solid coverage. Brown is going to throw the kitchen sink at them. They are going to be overwhelmed in my opinion. I see this close in the first but after halftime we run away with it. Michigan is salty this year fellas.....they are taking a page out of MSU book and claiming disrespect........Michigan- 35 Notre Dame- 17
August 13th, 2018 at 4:48 PM ^
I don't see how they get 17. They have a new line, a backup RB and either a Frosh on his first start or Mr. Erratic. 24-3
August 13th, 2018 at 4:53 PM ^
If we do not turn the ball over, I don't think ND gets 17. If we do turn the ball over like last year, it will not be good. I expect our offense to take a little time to begin to gel, so I hope we don't give up any more than 17 points.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:55 PM ^
Well they always seem to get some bounces their way. I don't know why, but they do...With it being a rivalry game, at night, their house and being 1st game, I just see some hiccups on our part due to first game jitters. All the kinks get worked out at halftime....I think we will do a better job adjusting on the fly and at halftime then the Irish.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
People seem to keep forgetting our offense likely won't be that good. Two new tackles with a QB playing his first real game with the team on the road against a projected top 10 defense. I don't care how good Patterson is, we aren't going from where we were last year to lighting up a top 10 pass defense that returned the entire secondary on the road.
This game has 14-10 or 17-10 written all over it.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
No but turnovers and special teams might play into it too....I know our Offense wasn't good in 2017 but new year, new team, new coaches, new scheme and definitely a new QB. I think Higdon, Gentry and McKeon are huge for us in this game.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:41 PM ^
As with anything new, there is a learning curve and acclimation period.
August 13th, 2018 at 6:10 PM ^
I tend to be optimistic for our O this year.
I think the run game will be much improved both with the line schemes and increased size and strength for both Higdon and Evans.
That should open things up for Shea who is accurate and a threat to keep two TD drives alive per game with his feet.
Another year in the system for DPJ and getting Back in Black and it could be Hells Bells for the Catholics.
August 14th, 2018 at 1:12 PM ^
Our run game was good from mid-season on and I expect that to continue to improve.
Our pass blocking and QB play were the main issues and I think with the addition of Warinner and Patterson we will see significant improvement there. ND lost 2 starting OL linemen who were the first in the history of ND football to go top 10 in the NFL draft. They also lost their starting RB, TE and WR. Wimbush was erratic last year and recent video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2bnlEPKQKA) shows that really hasn't changed much, his accuracy is horrible. With those losses and Wimbush under center I expect their offense to be worse.
Our defense will be dominant, top 10 last year and should be top 5 or better this year. Their defense was barely top 20 last year but they're returning pretty much everyone so I expect them to be better this year. Having said that I don't think their D is in the same league with ours. They'll be good but not elite.
This thing comes down to which offense can perform better against the other team's defense and based on what I see right now I like our chances there.
August 14th, 2018 at 8:01 AM ^
But does it have to be good? A short field, a big special teams play, and if Patterson connects on even 1 deep ball it changes the game. The offense was unknown vs Utah in 2015, but there were 2 missed deep balls that could've won the game.
August 14th, 2018 at 12:12 PM ^
ND lost their OL coach as well, huge loss.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
They don't get 17 points on Michigan's defense. 10-14, maybe. Kelly can generate a big play and one long drive where they exhaust their playbook. Anything after that is difficult to imagine.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:48 PM ^
With uncertain QB play, and breaking in a new OL, I don't see much production for the ND offense on 9/1.
Defense travels, so they won't be rattled by "the game day crew", or playing in a hostile environment.
Brown and Co. will have this defense ready to attack on the first snap. It'd be stupid to predict a shut-out, but I think we will hold them under 200 yards of total offense.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:58 PM ^
That punters leg is going to be sore....I'm must excited to see the many different shades of red faces from Kelly
August 13th, 2018 at 6:12 PM ^
The punter's leg is not going to be as sore as Wimbush's full body after Gary, Winovich, Bush and company repeatedly and violently plant his ass into the Irish turf...
August 13th, 2018 at 4:48 PM ^
The only thing that worries me about ND’s offense against our defense is my own lack of worry. He’s going to need to hit football sized windows while getting the ball off in less than 2 seconds. He ain’t that good.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:49 PM ^
knoblauch is german for garlic. just sayin...
August 13th, 2018 at 6:15 PM ^
What’s German for VinegarStrokes?
August 13th, 2018 at 6:25 PM ^
Pudyankin I believe.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:51 PM ^
I am still trying to figure out why the media are so high on ND. They have gone from a school that used to get "The Luck of the Irish" whenever they needed it to a team that enters each season highly ranked and "shoots itself in the foot" whenever they have a shot at greatness.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:19 PM ^
Hmm. Sounds familiar. Can't figure out why.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:53 PM ^
Telling myself Brandon Wimbush is just a less good JT Barrett is making me feel a lot better about this game.
August 13th, 2018 at 6:31 PM ^
Someone mentioned Knoblauch above, but Rick Neuheisel was talking about Wimbush the other day in that he developed the "yips" last year on short passes and had a really hard time completing a screen pass. Like Knoblauch, Steve Sax, and more currently Jon Lester in that he cannot throw to first base on a pickoff move. Hope he still has the problem. Would be cool to see an errant screen pass go for 6 the other way.
August 14th, 2018 at 1:30 PM ^
If you watched the video in the OP you would have seen the screen pass drill they were running at the beginning and Wimbush was doing just that, throwing behind his receivers twice in the three reps they showed, Jurkovec was way more accurate.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
John O’Korn is that you??
Just kidding, but in all seriousness, he looks terrible. Good luck against probably the best defense this dude will ever see playing at Notre Dame. It’ll be fun watch Don Brown and Co smack them around.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
Right in the lumber yard.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:58 PM ^
It COULD just be a bad day. But he also had an entire season of game action where he completed under half of his passes, so....
August 13th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
I think umbig11 said the same thing the other day in regards to Wimbush looking erratic
August 13th, 2018 at 5:13 PM ^
He also said it looks like they have a top 10 defense. So not sure where the irrational confidence is coming from. I think Michigan wins 14-7 or 14-10
August 13th, 2018 at 5:24 PM ^
As we’ve seen, having erratic QB play, even with a really good defense, will put your defense on the field with their backs against the wall a few times.
How many times has our “defense” given up 20+ points simply based on the opponents having great field position? With a QB who struggles through the air and a Michigan defense that excels in generating pressure and tackles for loss, ND will be moving backwards quite a bit. Setting Michigan up with excellent field position.
Even if the offense isn’t very good, field position alone and a kicker with a booming leg is probably good enough for 20+ on its own.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:29 PM ^
That's exactly what I have been saying...Nordin will have to be HUGE for us this year. He's just as important ( in my opinion) as Patterson
August 13th, 2018 at 8:49 PM ^
Surprise! ak47 is trolling! What’s that? Someone says something positive about the football team? ak47 is here to be the voice of reason and let everyone know why their optimism is misplaced. Wimbush looks erratic? Their defense is amazing. Someone says something positive about the offense? ak would just like to let you know that they will probably be shitty. Your schtick is old and tired

Thanks LSA. My apologies for not even getting the link right.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
Despite my post upthread, I don't enjoy my confidence. I distinctly remember going into the '89 game thinking our massive OL was going to manball ND's undersized DL. The opposite happened. Also Rocket's 2 TD's. Fuck those guys.
August 13th, 2018 at 6:19 PM ^
How the fuck did Bo decide to kick to Rocket...again.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:16 PM ^
Could be a sampling issue, but good grief, that was terrible. His accuracy, for example, compared to Book, was just abysmal. Jurkovec doesn't throw a pretty ball, though he hits his man. Book may have gotten lucky on those throws into the nets, but I thought he did a great job.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:20 PM ^
Im sorry but i think people thinking UM is going to put up 30+ points is getting ahead of theirselves. I see this being a 23-17 style game.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:39 PM ^
I have absolutely no clue how our offense is gonna do. Total wildcard.
I would be surprised if ND scored 17 though. Maybe with some turnovers.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:54 PM ^
Im figuring in a short field on a turnover
August 13th, 2018 at 5:20 PM ^
Seemed like Book is a better QB anyway. They may be better off starting him instead of Wimbush or a true freshman.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:23 PM ^
Nice Chuck Knoblach (sp?) reference!! Still remember him having the 'yips' on super simple throws from 2nd base
