Tyrece Woods Commits to Michigan
We interrupt the reading of tea leaves and the burning of entrails over the scraps of information leaking out of the submarine for an actual news update: Belleville Defensive Tackle Tyrece Woods committed to Michigan last night.
I’m a Michigan man. All Glory To God‼️ 100000% COMMITTED #GoBlue pic.twitter.com/pj3X0qc2Rm
— Tyrece Woods (@espnrece) August 13, 2018
In the short term, Woods will cause strife between the star-gazers and the numbers guys. A three-star, Woods is currently the 46th-ranked prospect... in the state of Michigan (#1866 overall). Michigan was also his first and only Power 5 offer. However, his measurables suggest he might have slightly more upside than that.
New #Michigan DL commit Tyrece Woods ran 4.65 twice in camp for the #Wolverines staff with a 4.2 shuttle, benches 225 26 times and is a 500-pound squatter. Talks "Special" opportunity to commit and play for the Maize and Blue: https://t.co/drerqH5SnR @TremendousUM @SamWebb77

It is worth noting however, that when both Greg Mattison and Don Brown approve of a defensive lineman, it is generally wise to adjust your opinions accordingly.
Woods is the 20th commit in the class, and the 4th defensive end. However, early indications are that Michigan might be planning to feed him many sandwiches and move him inside to three-tech, making him the second interior lineman in the class (joining Mazi Smith). His Belleville teammate Andre Seldon is committed in the 2020 class.
Informative update to follow.

If the team needs an expert in the area of selecting and obtaining many sandwiches, I'm available.
Seriously, though, if this young man can maintain his athleticism at 280 or so he's going to be a candidate for sleeper of the decade.
August 13th, 2018 at 3:25 PM ^
Here's to hoping 100,000% is better than 110% and 1000%.... because those haven't worked that well.
Welcome, young Mr. Woods.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:21 PM ^
One million percent is minimal acceptable, in my opinion.
August 13th, 2018 at 10:51 PM ^
Nigel Tufnel would approve.
August 13th, 2018 at 3:51 PM ^
Zingerman's or Maize and Blue?
Zingerman's is probably an NCAA violation.
August 13th, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
If you are looking to add weight, you have to go with M&B.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:25 PM ^
If you’re looking to build endurance, waiting in line at Zingerman’s will help
August 13th, 2018 at 9:03 PM ^
That's patience, not endurance.
Is patience a valuable DL skill?
If so, Zingerman's it is!
August 13th, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
Another huge reach by this staff. Taking Ronnie Bell at the end of a cycle is one thing, taking guys like Kent , Woods, and Velazquez before the season even starts is another. Feels like laziness. Also expect the "look at his offer list" folks to move on to the next argument. Probably like trust the coaches or some bullshit.
August 13th, 2018 at 3:58 PM ^
With those measurables, at 255 lbs entering his senior year, he's not much of a reach. He'll be a 4* by signing day and 280 by the time he steps on campus.
August 13th, 2018 at 9:10 PM ^
Stop wasting your time - Victor Maizen Bluey ONLY cares what 24/7 & ESPN think of a croot, not our coaching staff.
If Alan Trieu didn't see a croot run a good 40 or bench a school bus, it DIDN'T HAPPEN!
If Bill Greene doesn't break a toe kicking a chair when M grabs a croot from ohio then the dude sucks!
I'd ask just ONE question of Victor & other Starz gazers:
Where was last year's Heisman winner & 1st overall draft pick in the rankings for his class?
I've heard a rumor he was a walk on?!
August 13th, 2018 at 9:15 PM ^
This is like saying everyone should drop out of college because Bill Gates did and he's a bilionaire now.
August 13th, 2018 at 11:45 PM ^
No, it's really not. THAT would be if I said ONLY take walk ons!
It IS however completely accurately pointing out that 24/7, ESPN, Rivals don't ALWAYS know everything, aren't ALWAYS right, and especially in this time of budget cuts, sometimes MISS SOMETHING!
You, among all the denizens of M sites, are so uncompromisingly married to the crootin services that it becomes a running joke to the other habitues, making you seem like a crank committed to propping up the value of his subscriptions!
Hell, we ALL want Bama's classes, but if you think that's a REALITY with our relative lack of success compared to them (or Clemson, or sadly, the buckeyes) then you're just a sad sad dreamer!
But Clemson has made multiple CFPs with lower ranked classes than ours, Oregon has been in, etc... these coaches have to find the best players they can get to commit to Michigan. They COULD wait it out & strike out, like last year, or they could proactively find hard working, nose to the grindstone, COMMITTED players. I salute that approach, and "lazy" is the last thing I'd call it!
Why you so hateful?!
August 14th, 2018 at 12:13 PM ^
Don Brown and Greg Mattison evaluating the guy over the course of two days at a football camp v. Some internet asshole reading about stars granted by a guy who maybe saw film of one game from a year ago. Hmmmmm......
August 13th, 2018 at 9:12 PM ^
No he won't. 6'2 240 lbs as DT is laughable.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:04 PM ^
Velazquez was not a reach if you've ever seen the kid play. He's a true viper
August 13th, 2018 at 5:41 PM ^
Correct. His ratings were skewed because he was a Baseball commit.
August 13th, 2018 at 9:12 PM ^
Jerion Ealy is baseball player yet his ranking wasn't affected.
August 13th, 2018 at 10:03 PM ^
Are you kidding me? This Shawn L. Martin/ Maizen / Bluey.
I remember this same quote as when Velazquez committed.
Dude - you are just sad. Don’t you have anything better to do? Go sign up for an on-line dating service - you will thank me.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^
Let's see Brown and Mattison scouted him and extended the offer, so let's see a national championship winning D-line coach and one of the best DCs in the country, offer a kid based on personal observation. But to you that's a lazy offer. I think I'll trust their judgement.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:23 PM ^
Right. Better to do the work of trusting the scouting services, rather than one's own lying eyes.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
I guess this is Maizen's new account.
August 13th, 2018 at 6:52 PM ^
It is. He’s like a shitty horror movie villain. Just keeps coming back no matter how many accounts get caved.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:04 PM ^
Hey Vickie, stop poopin in Hello threads or we'll pull your card.
Idiot.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:23 PM ^
Ronnie Bell is lighting it up in camp. He might not redshirt. I won't split hairs over the other names you mentioned but Ronnie Bell is a badass
August 13th, 2018 at 6:11 PM ^
That is what I read as well. He was one of 3 or 4 freshmen named by umbig11 I believe.
August 13th, 2018 at 9:13 PM ^
Well we all know how reliable camp reports are lol.
August 13th, 2018 at 5:36 PM ^
Yes, because the one word always associated with Harbaugh is "lazy".
What a maroon.
August 13th, 2018 at 7:04 PM ^
Maybe one day the coaching staff will stop their laziness of trying to do the absolute best they can and instead post to message boards.
You could argue results, strategy, and other things on this board, but I'm fairly certain that you are insane if call this staff lazy
August 13th, 2018 at 7:27 PM ^
‘sup maizen
August 13th, 2018 at 8:08 PM ^
In general, the laziness is amongst the rankings services, hence the lack of scouting on many of these guys. The coaches work hard and they probably have a pretty good idea about who they’ll get and the spots they have filled.
August 13th, 2018 at 10:05 PM ^
OK. Which is more lazy??
1. Go out and see players. Talk to them. Have them in for an interview. Review a bunch of tape. Meet their families. Or...
2. Check out what 247 thinks and go from there.
August 15th, 2018 at 12:52 AM ^
I’m not quite down to ValVic’s level but getting close. Is there an average number of 5* 4* and 3* rated total each year or is that number fluid? Is it a curve? We see Dantonio hammer out a respectable season now and then, hell, even win the big ten with 2s and 3s so it’s not the star level per se, but rather what the UM coaches seem to be able to land compared to other blue bloods. Is it the academic hurdle mainly that keeps the truly nfl-bound elite 4*s and 5*s from loading up the roster? You gotta admit, it is disappointing to see this guy’s measurables but when it comes to the defense we’ve seen D Brown make some stellar coaching decisions that give him wide latitude. Not so much on offense. Some doubts started for me when Harbaugh took Ulizio when he did back in 2015 ........ why? Yes, I’m no cfb recruiter but I have been watching for a LOOOONG time now and I cringed when I saw the Ulizio hello post and “hilites.” Back in 92 - 96 for example (when I was on campus) it seemed we had a prototype OT - young alpha men that would grow to road graders. Not sure what these guys see in some of their picks. Just 2 cents.
August 13th, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
I'll admit, that when I saw the thing about Mattison approved... the first thing that came to mind was his sign-off on vastly undersized Brady Pallante... and then he also went after and offered OL Dan Samuelson. granted, he has to go after guys summoned by Hoke I guess, but when both these players were given scholarships, even I scratched my head... as if these were simply filling the class for the sake of doing so after missing on everyone else.
Granted, both were late in cycle... Woods isn't, and they probably ascertained that he will be alot bigger by the time he sets foot on campus....
August 13th, 2018 at 5:27 PM ^
Didn’t we flip Samuelson from Nebraska? It didn’t work it with him, but it’s not like he was seen as a MAC-caliber talent at the time. (Also, I think it was Funk who recruited him, not Mattison.)
August 13th, 2018 at 5:01 PM ^
Welcome Tyrece, way to GoBlue!
August 13th, 2018 at 6:58 PM ^
Mmmm. Sandwiches.
August 13th, 2018 at 9:14 PM ^
I'm with all of the other star gazers, when I see a three star guy I'm initially disappointed. But when I see a 255 pound kid run a 4.65 forty I get a little giddy. We had a DB on my highschool team who had 12 kick-off and punt returns for TDs my senior year. No one could tackle him and he ran a 4.8. (We were class A in Michigan when that meant something.)
...and then I see 225 pounds [26] times!!!! That's better than the majority of guys at the NFL combine last year. Maybe he has short arms, but that's pretty good no matter how long your arms are.
Not sure why TW wasn't rated higher considering all of the people scouting Devonte Dobbs, and the QB that spurned MSU for OSU, but he's got something.
August 13th, 2018 at 11:05 PM ^
With the athletes OSU accumulates who can zip around the edge in an eyeblink, we have to accumulate guys across the field who can flat-out fly. Yes, it would be nice if in addition to having freak speed they were also bringing advanced technique and production, but if they did, they'd be 5-stars and we wouldn't be signing them.
Instead, you go find superb athletes and hope you can give them top-level coaching to teach them how to get the max out of that physical ability on the field.
The alternative is to get more productive or refined players and teach them how to be faster and more athletic. Mattison is a great coach, but I've never seen him teach someone how to be fast.
These are the guys we have to find.

Only a single post today and it's not even a fully informative one? Just an announcement that a player committed?? Guys. Come on. Whats going on here? Health problems still? There has to be SOMETHING one of you can write about.
I'm sorry for complaining but also not sorry because this site needs more articles per day. Maybe hire some more writers? I don't know man I'm trying to offer solutions instead of just complaining... and this comment is way too long. lol
August 14th, 2018 at 9:31 AM ^
Ace is dealing with health issues and I believe Brian is having/had a baby. That said, I find myself going to other sites to get most of my info. The board used to make up for any lapses in coverage, but 3.0 has slowed the posting, or at least the non hot take posting. Isaiah Hole breaks more stories than the board. I think the trolls and troll accusers on the board have taken a toll.
August 14th, 2018 at 6:48 AM ^
I know... we can call him 'ole woods'.
