Is Dan Dakich awful or is it just me?

Trust me.

I like him. He said nice things about us, too. He's outspoken and called out the Knicks in a way I loved.
And for bonus fun, he stirred up little bro' tonight. When he talked about some teams complaining about injuries, Izzo fits the bill. Big time.
There's a thread at RCMB where they're all upset.

Loved the trashing of the Knicks. Especially as it came right after commercial for a Knicks game. I would imagine some execs at ESPN were cringing during that.

In his defense, I recall him once praising Max Bielfeldt for having the biggest calves in the Big 10, so at least he recognizes certain accomplishments.
January 19th, 2014 at 1:23 PM ^
Yeah, that was earlier this year. A little strange.

I thought I posted your post and had no recolection of it.. took me a second. Have you had this avatar a while? I just created this new account not long ago, I had a different avatar on my other account.. but I use this avatar all over the internet. Either way, just curious more than anything.. it's a great avatar. South Park and Stauskas, two of my favorite things.

He used to really troll us hard before this. Now he's just merely unbearable.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:39 PM ^
Sometimes it seems like he tries to do a Dickie V. impression (at least pitch and "enthusiasm"-wise), which is when I find him annoying. He definitely didn't seem to have many nice things to say about Michigan before his kid walked on, but he seems decently balanced to me now.

Griese did that when he announced UM games while Brian was QB. I remember a game, might have been the OSU game or the Rose Bowl, and he was the announcer and you could hear him straining not to cheer on his son so hard. Obviously not the same, but in this instance it does feel like Dakich tends to underplay UM basketball a bit.
That said, he can be downright insufferable, though I'll take million of hims over a minute of Vitale.
January 18th, 2014 at 11:12 PM ^
Remember it well - he struggled with it for a while. He insisted on calling him "Griese" all season until the final game or two, when he loosened up and called him Brian.

I loved his call of the game. The fact that it was our greatest road win ever had some play, but I love any guy who actually calls people out, especially refs, and the Knicks. Dude's real. Jabrill Peppers probably loves Dakich. Word's awful, not aweful.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:14 PM ^
I, too, loved him calling out the Knicks. I'm sure the folks at ESPN didn't like it as much since they kept advertising the Knicks vs Nets game on Monday. Then Dakich goes on to say he doesn't know how anyone can willingly watch the Knicks.

I thought that rant about the Knicks was hilarious. He didn't just mention it.. it was a legit 30 second bashing of New York. Found it pretty funny.
January 19th, 2014 at 9:10 AM ^
"If you pay money to watch the Knicks after that performance... you must have a lot of money."
Classic

he gave his Indiana buddy, Woodson, a total pass.

In all seriousness, I don't see how ANYONE enjoys listening to him.
I think because his son plays for Michigan and now he's more pro-Michigan that Michigan fans all of a sudden like him. THAT is actually more annoying that Dakich himself.
99.9% of Michigan fans couldn't STAND Dakich the past 2 years...now his son plays for Michigan and he knows the team better, loves Beilein and Stauskas and all of a sudden people like him.
He's still a terrible announcer, he's just now a terrible announcer that likes Michigan.
January 19th, 2014 at 8:51 AM ^
People REALLY need to stop comparing broadcasters to Dick Vitale.
Could you imagine Dick Vitale, actually calling a game like a normal person? It would be weird and be even more awful.
He's his own entity at this point. Just accept it, he's not going to get better, he can't...he gets paid to be him. It may be a clown, but that's what it is. Just like Chris Berman isn't going to stop being Chris Berman, that's his brand. That's why they still have a job, it's not because they're actually GOOD. It's their brand.
Keith Jackson was borderline senile that last 5 years he was in the booth. It was painful to listen to him because he messed up everything. But he was the brand and the voice of the Rose Bowl. If he could get off one "WHOOOOOOOAAAA NELLLLLLLIIIIIE!!!!" then it was worth it.
Musberger is now in this group. Corso is this for College Gameday.
Some of these guys shouldn't be compared to the standard in their profession is what I'm saying. So it does nothing comparing Dakich to Vitale. That's a horrible comparison. Compare Dakich to his industry standard. When you do, you'll see his sucks.

I believe the true definition of 'awful' is to be full of awe at something.

I actually enjoy his broadcasts.
Huh.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:30 PM ^
I'll second that. I think he's great. Obviously, he's got a lot of bball knowledge and he's good at sharing it during the game. I don't see what the problem is with him. I'd take him over Dickie V any day. Dickie V spends most of the game kissing butt instead of actually breaking down plays and adding true color commentary.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:14 PM ^
HaHa, yeah he is tearable. He is quite maranic and says some stoopid stuff.
January 18th, 2014 at 11:08 PM ^
*moranic IMO
January 18th, 2014 at 10:14 PM ^
I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I think Dakich is actually one of the better color guys on ESPN.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:14 PM ^
Much worse. Seems like its been a night and day difference which may be because his son is on the team now. Either that or I just didn't notice tonight being so ecstatic with how good of a game we played.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:16 PM ^
Glad his son plays for Michigan but it will forever make being annoyed with Dan an awkward situation. We all know by now that various recruits and players read this blog. I know it's a favorite pasttime to talk about our distaste for Mr. Dakich but I cringe at the thought of Andrew coming onto this blog and seeing it.
I think my permanent stance on Dan Dakich will have to be "I find other announcers to be more enjoyable than him. Next question."

and not the play-by-play guy, i actually thought he did a good job, entertaing without overdoing it. it was my first time hearing him so maybe i don't have the built in prejudice that others have, but he did just fine.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:15 PM ^
Did you watch any games before his son committed to UM? He was just as bad, if not worse, back then.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:19 PM ^
He doesn't bother me much. He says some stupid things at times but all announcers do. As others have mentioned i like him calling out the refs when they screw up. I also liked him calling out the knicks tonight.
January 18th, 2014 at 10:19 PM ^
He's not the greatest, but there are far worse out there. Bottom line is, so long as Michigan plays like they did today and comes away with a W, then Miley Cyrus could call the game and I wouldn't care... Come to think of it, that might be entertaining as hell... Can we make this happen?

I like him as a color commentator -- I'd suffice to say he is in the top 10%. He actually gives out some decent analysis due to his coaching career, just like Bruce Pearl. He is a little loud and uses some hyperboles (Aaron Craft), but he isn't nearly as bad as Dick Vitale. His willingness to get excited about great basketball plays AND speak out about bad plays/refs/behavior makes me take his opinion more seriously than fluffer commentators.
I don't like him on twitter, however.
